Robot Roller-Derby Disco Dodgeball is a Fun Experience

As it turns out, one of the top new multiplayer games available on Steam is a sports game...sort of. It's also a lot like a first-person shooter, and contains more colors than you'd think possible.

Robot Roller-Derby Disco Dodgeball is an unwieldy, but hyper-accurate title for this early-access independent game from developer Erik Asmussen. In it, you are a robot, fighting in a Tron-like arena with the simple task of throwing balls at the other team.

This, of course, sounds odd and unique, which pretty much sums up my first few experiences with RRDD. It's really unlike anything I've played before, including other more traditional shooters. The closest comparison I can make is an old Xbox game called Deathrow, but with more rainbows and less swearing.

The action is frenetic. Your wheeled robot doesn't quite steer as nimbly as a bipedal soldier, so you need to account for momentum when attempting anything. Similarly, throwing the ball requires prediction and precision, as the physics seem pretty accurate for a small arcade title.

The game is primarily a multi-player game, and included are a number of modes to vary the traditional dodgeball format. I preferred one that included a goal (hence my Deathrow reference), giving the action a more focused and sport-like feel. There's a minor leveling and customizing aspect to the multiplayer as well.

There is also a single player arcade mode, which features increasingly difficult scenarios. A great way to practice, as this game does seem to feature a steep learning curve.

Still, if you want to jump in, RRDD is chaotic enough to simply just experience blindly. Sure, skill is very important, but you can have some fun just participating in the madness.

Robot Roller-Derby Disco Dodgeball is a unique experience, though as an early-release, expect some bugs and minor annoyances from time to time. That said, it plays pretty well as is. The numerous positive reviews on Steam represent what seems to be a vibrant and passionate community. At $10, this is a low investment for a fun "filler" sports game.

Wonder if this will hit consoles as a digital only title?
