Why Sports Games Will Be Even Better in 2015...

A lot of us at Operation Sports, myself included, are quick to point out that our favorite video game genre is sliding toward obscurity. Each year, it seems we lose at least one annual franchise. Some entire sports are only on one console, or worse, not represented at all.

It's easy to prophesize doom; it's much harder to be positive. That said, there are reasons to look forward to 2015 including some that indicate this will be a landmark year.

1. Consoles are better than ever

It can be hard to believe, but we are really only two console cycles removed from the original Xbox and Playstation 2. Go back and play some of those sports games. While some are revered, many are all but unplayable. The technology simply wasn't strong enough to support what most of us wanted from our games.

In 2015, we have the most powerful consoles ever available. This doesn't automatically mean great things, but...

2. Developers are now firmly in the "next" generation.

New consoles don't always equal instant success, especially early in the console generation. Madden 06 is often cited as an example of a rushed game with a limited feature set.

However, we are two years into the Xbox One/PS4 era. Even though some games, like The Show, have only appeared once, we can expect fully developed products to appear during 2015. Speaking of which...

3. The big games are stronger than ever

While it's true that we are losing games each year, those that are left are better than ever. Look at top shelf games like Madden 15, MLB 14: The Show, NBA 2K15, and FIFA 15; all had critically successful years. Perhaps more importantly, they are viewed as quality products by our passionate fan base.

Super Mega Baseball.

4. Independents are getting better

The small game scene really blossomed on the 360 and PS3, thanks to online distribution and the rise of independently developed games. While it may have regressed a bit during the console transition, there's no reason to think that we'll get fewer small or indy titles over the next year or so. In fact, the recent success of Super Mega Baseball reinforces the idea that fans are willing to accept a non-licensed title if the gameplay -- and price -- is right.

5. Innovation and the promise of new technology

I always like to read science articles that predict what technology may become common place during the upcoming year. The same excitement applies to future gaming technology, including those that increase immersiveness and entertainment levels.

Included here are 3D and motion technologies, which, while occasionally gimmicky, have the ability to transform how we play games. The new Kinect is just waiting for a break-out sports title. Sony's 3D technology is on the horizon as well.

Beyond these big sci-fi-ish developments, smaller technologies and practices shape how we play games. Streaming services, digital distribution, and subscription services may not be popular now, but who knows what the year holds. I barely used Steam until it debuted on the Mac, allowed cross-platform purchases, and offered ridiculous sale prices. Now, the annual sales are "appointment" web-browsing.

What are you looking forward to most in the 2015?

It's just tradition here at OS... I love Madden 15 myself and I don't care how "uncool" that might seem here, lol

I just want NHL and Madden for PC...

The irony lost here in many is the people here always saying how much better the ps2 football Madden was....

But yet back in that time frame everyone said it was just a big bag of crap.

Which means I guess on ps7 people will be looking back and remembering the fantastically great Madden 15 on the ps4, when we actually had a great game lol

I find the game just struggles on trying to sell itself as a sim game when it tries hold on to arcade like gameplay, most likely to entice casual players. There are more issues but I don't want to turn this into a long response. Just look at more reviews and youtube. USGamer and GameSpot reviews are spot on I believe.
I respect your response and it has very valid points.

NBA 2k15 needs to do more ...more stats, make each season game different game 5 should not feel like game 72 especially if playoff are in your future the game should be very intense or drama filled.. ticker bar would be nice so i know whats going on around the league, need to know whats going on in my division heading into game 77 with the title on the line.. Madden wheres the ticker bar..need more stats update information around the league during halftime.. commentary is boring and again the week three should be different than week 14...NHL put out the worst hockey game in a long time ...missing a lot three stars was patched in but they didnt skate on to the ice for introduction.. no ticker bar ... no stats update ... no all star game or weekend... dry career mode dry GM mode ...Fifa did a great job on all theses options but they didn't have a ticker bar but had updates that felt real when they interrupted the match about a time in the league who was playing on the same day.. MLB the show needs to improve their commentary and excitement of the season division games should be hostile or drama filled ...i think the DEVS for their respective game should watch a game and take and it to their games ....hey if its in the game PUT IT IN THE GAME

There's no excuse for all EA Sports games still using last gen player models. I'm starting to think why the hell did I buy a PS4 because none of these sports games in my opinion have made a significant leap graphics wise from last gen to current gen.
I don't know how to just put a thumbs up or a like so I'll say I completely agree with this guy.

Yes, I believe this will be a big year for sport games. With developers firmly integrated on the new consoles there should be plenty improvement for our favorite sport games.

I hate online play - so I hope developers dont just focus on that aspect on the future development.

I wish I had the money and the know how to just create a generic football game with incredible game play and the smallest details and make it completely customizable. How awesome would it be to be able to create the NFL AND NCAA Football within one game! THere are some very talented people out there that could create the uniforms, players, stadiums or field graphics etc...and be able to share them. It would take forever to create but, once created, its done. And instead of annual $60 for a new game, just keep updating, improving throughout and maybe charge $20 for major graphical upgrades or game play upgrades every year or 8 months or whatever...another words, no annual game release just constant improvements. This would definitely sink Madden or at the very least, force them to actually upgrade their game. Unfortunately, i only know how to play the games, not design. I would definitely support something like this though....Would love to see college hoops come back as well. Imagine the NBA2k15 graphics and game play for a college hoops game. Wow.

MLB15, FIFA15, NBA2K15, and Madden15 all on PS4, were all fun solid games. There is always room for improvement.

I would love to see the stadium lighting of NCAA Football in The Show, including the dynamic sky and weather. That immersion in NCAA Football really sucked me in. The high graphics fidelity was awesome. Also, continue to upgrade the player animations and transition smoothness.

NHL15 AI to me played a lot like NHL07 when EA first instituted the Shot Stick, but the AI felt like "chickens running around with their heads cut off". That was fixed in NHL08 and was a great game, with NHL09 being my high point for fun, feel, and playability. So much so that it put 2K Hockey out of business. Let's hope that NHL16 brings the complete package next year.

I agree with that it would def make these games step their games up and stop copying and pasting

What I hated about Madden 15 was that they didnt have a cointoss for online games and just about everything thrown deep was intercepted or deflected

AMEN.

I'll always argue that NCAA has the most compelling franchise/dynasty modes of any sports games.

If you told me back in like 2005 how madden 15 on ps4 would be I would laugh at you has I would think the game would be much much better. While madden 15 is the best madden game in a long time that is not saying much and the game is far and I mean far from great. I cant say a NFL game where the CPU wont throw the ball and takes 9-11 sacks is great plus no penterties in the game those 2 things are a game killer and a lot of things about madden on ps2 are still better.
Are you new here? Because this nostalgic nonsense had been going on since video-game have been around and OS is no exception to that rule.

If you could go back and read the OS forums from the PS2 days of Madden you would see all the same crap that you see now with the exception of the exclusivity hate.

Maddens always been Madden, either you like it's style or not but don't pretend ps2 Madden was better than what we have now because you have seriously got to be kidding yourself if you think that's true.

Take off those nostalgic rose colored glasses
