Five Sports Apps You May Have Missed in 2014

Unwrap a new iPad or an iPhone 6 for Christmas? Or, do you have lots of travel time to kill over the holidays? Here are a few iOS Sports games that might have flown under your Santa-tracking radar.

1.Qvadriga: I reviewed this chariot racing simulation/manager back in July. It doesn’t look like much, but its gameplay is deep, challenging, and consistently varied. In fact, mobile site Pocket Tactics named it their Sports Game of the Year .

2. Motorsport Manager: If you prefer racing with more wheels and fewer horses, check out Motorsport Manager. It’s sort of the opposite of Qvadriga: it looks great, but isn’t quite as deep or tactical. On the other hand, it’s great for quick sessions over a long period.

3.Pro Strategy Football 2014: A great pigskin simulator, especially if your team has been eliminated from the playoffs. PSF allows you to design and execute plays as you guide a team through an NFL season. Career mode is expected soon.

4.1st and Goal: Another football game, though one that’s a bit more abstract than PSF. In this game, you use cards and dice to see the results of plays. Works great as a pass and play game. Be sure to purchase one of the cheap expansion packs to increase variety. Read our review here.

5. 7 Minute Superhero Workout: When your holiday eating is over, this fun fitness game will help you keep your New Year’s Resolutions. It’s basically a Kinect-style fitness game for your iPhone, which works well enough. Pair the app with an Apple TV, and it can be a fun, story-driven, and effective workout system.
