Here is our interview with the VP of Marketing at 2K, Chris Snyder, as we discuss NHL 2K coming to iOS and Android devices.
Q: What was the inspiration/reason for revitalizing the 2K brand of hockey?
A: It was a great opportunity for us to satisfy the NHL fan. Whether you are hardcore or casual fan there is something for everyone in NHL 2K. Looking at the market place, the timing felt right.
Q: Why the choice to go mobile?
A: With advancements in mobile gaming technology, the ability to deliver a fully featured game is finally here. With NHL 2K we were able to achieve just that.
Q: The game will arrive in the fall for Android and iOS devices, are there plans to release for the Windows phone or other devices?
A: No
Q: What do you think the 2K hockey brand means to people at this point?
A: I think 2K in general stands for quality, so I would hope fans would know we aim to bring a quality NHL experience on mobile. Our last mobile effort on NHL was well received and reviewed, so we need to keep that standard high.
Q: Can you tell us more about the My Career mode?
A: With the My Career mode, you start your career on the lines with the least amount of ice time. Its then through playing and collecting skill points that you work your way onto the top lines.
Q: How deep will it be?
A: As you progress through the seasons, you get a chance to collect Offensive, Defensive, and General Skill Points. You get awarded these skill points based on how you play. If you’re an offensive force, you’ll get more offensive skill points. And the same goes with Defense. How you play shapes the kind of player you’ll become.
Q: How many seasons can we play?
A: You can play as many seasons as you want, which actually marks the first time we’ve allowed multiple Seasons on mobile.
Q: How do you navigate the issue of controlling a hockey game on mobile?
A: NHL 2K11 had a great D pad touch functionality. That returns this year as well as the ability to control the size of the D pad. We also have controller support for the game as well.
Q: How extensive will the season mode be?
A: Similar to NHL 2K11, season mode lets you play through a full NHL season and Stanley Cup with your favorite professional hockey team. While in season mode, you can also edit lines and rosters, trade players, and check stats.
Q: Can you detail the multiplayer features? Any live play?
A: There is no live play, but the shootout mode will be multiplayer. Each player can take turns trying to best the other’s goalie.
Q: How often will the rosters be updated?
A: We plan to continue updating the rosters on an ongoing basis post-launch.
Q: Can you give us some details on the Winter Classic mode?
A: The Winter Classic mode makes its return from NHL 2K11 and allows you to play in an outdoor skating rink in snow and freezing temperatures.
Q: The game costs $7.99. Are there any in-game purchases for the game? For example, upgrading gear in MyCareer, upgrading your ratings, etc.?
A: No, NHL 2K is launching as premium mobile title for $7.99, with no IAPs
Q: Are there any specific items of interest that long-time fans of the series can look forward to?
A: Mini-Rink is making its debut on the mobile devices. Its faster paced with a very lively puck. I actually find myself playing that mode the most.
Q: Are there plans to bring the franchise back to the console?
A: There are no plans at this time.
