Five Possible DLC Rivalries for WWE 2K15

With the announcement of WWE 2K15's rivalry campaigns, developers 2K and Yukes are signalling that the historical single-player content of the last two years will continue. The first of these will be HHH vs. Shawn Michaels, and the other will be John Cena vs. CM Punk. In what 2K is calling the “2K Showcase” mode, these rivalries will weave in videos, highlights, interviews, pictures and text into the selected matches, and the matches themselves will feature all sorts of high spots and cinematic situations, as was done in the Attitude Era and Wrestlemania modes previously.

While these two rivalries will provide a decent arc to play through come October, it's fun to think about what other rivalries might be included as post-launch DLC. There will likely be new wrestlers added to the roster as DLC, but you'd have to believe that only characters on the launch roster will be considered for actual rivalries. Since there is also likely a good deal of effort required to stitch together all of the archival content and context for these modes, it's probable that we'll only see two or three “feuds” available for purchase.

Which rivalries make the most sense?

(1) Steve Austin vs. The Rock

To me, this feud has to be done right at some point in this kind of format. You had two of the best mic workers ever in the business, but you also had two guys who could put on incredibly dramatic and entertaining matches. The Rock was always a great athlete who could really hustle, and Austin was a deceptively good worker who modified his style after a string of injuries. Both got the most out of their careers and created many memorable matches during the late '90s and well past the turn of the millennium. I, for one, want to see the absurd “first-person” stunner recreated from the Backlash '99 pay-per-view. These two had so many unique spots during their matches that I'm sure 2K and Yukes are flush with ideas for recreating this feud in videogame form.

(2) Undertaker vs. Mankind

While it's possible that the developers may go the easier route of Undertaker vs. Kane (or even Undertaker vs. HHH), I think it would be neat to see some of the wacky matches, promos and segments that took place with these two. On top of that, the feud actually lasted over many years, which would lend itself well to telling a story that changed over multiple wrestling eras. There were boiler room brawls, buried alive matches and casket matches, as well as the infamous Hell in a Cell. With all of the wrinkles and stipulations, there have been very few feuds that had this much variety. Just the same, there was Paul Bearer's heel turn, as he became Mankind's manager in the middle of it all. It was a rivalry that helped cement Mankind — and by extension, Mick Foley — as a legitimate star, and it made the Undertaker look beatable for the first time in his career.

(3) Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho

While not the most (in)famous feud involving Shawn Michaels and a Canadian (more on that below), this rivalry would lend itself very well to a DLC pack. Since the whole gimmick of the rivalry was Jericho emulating (and trying to one-up) who Shawn Michaels was, it would be a lot of fun to revisit all of the promos and highlight packages around this one. There weren't as many matches in this feud, but the ones that happened would be awesome. Their initial Wrestlemania match. The no holds barred match. The ladder match. Not to mention, this feud had Jericho punching Michaels' wife and putting HBK through the Jeritron 6000. I'd love to see this all done with polygons for maximum silliness. There would probably need to be a few matches added to this feud to pad it out (involving other wrestlers), but I'd certainly still like to see it.

(4) Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels

It's a surprise that the shoot-work angle of Bret and Shawn hasn't been used much in game form up till this point, save for the Montreal Screwjob match in WWE 13. There were so many interesting matches in this feud, including the epic 60-minute iron man match as well as some pretty inspired cage and ladder matches earlier in their careers. I think the developers could have a lot of fun blending in some of the real-life heat that entered into this situation over the years, including the behind the scenes insanity that was that night in Montreal. If it worked, the rivalry could even start with The Rockers vs. The Hart Foundation earlier on, bridging into the singles feud. This would be a captivating rivalry in game form that would be really popular with new and old fans alike.

(5) Randy Orton vs. Triple H

This one's a little more contemporary, and it involves folks who are still on the roster, so I'd be surprised if it didn't show up at some point. Honestly, a lot of the matches involved in this one weren't the greatest, but the feud had lots of entertaining non-match segments, including Orton arriving with all of his lawyers and dcotors and HHH breaking in to Orton's House. The feud also works because Shane and Stephanie McMahon are heavily involved as characters in the feud but also as occasional match participants. Since ol' Triple H helps run the company these days, I'd expect he'd have no trouble greenlighting another rivalry with his name on it.

Which feuds do you think will end up as DLC in WWE 2K15?

Sting vs Ric Flair if Flair is in there would be great, HHH/Mankind, Undertaker/HBK, and HHH/Undertaker would all be fantastic fits for the DLC rivalries

Undertaker/Mankind is a great idea in theory, but Foley opted out of renewing his legends deal with WWE, citing among other things lack of payoff from the video games, so I don't think he's a realistic inclusion anytime soon.

Jericho and Michaels would be great as well as Hart/Michaels

That's a good point. I had wondered about the contract status of some wrestlers when writing the piece.

I agree with others that Sting/Flair and so some other WCW rivalries would be cool, but I don't think we'll see those for the simple reason that the commentary of these games is totally WWE-centric, and they'd have to get the WCW guys in to do commentary and audio drops, which I don't see happening.

I just don't think you can include Hollywood Hulk Hogan without having some type of Sting/Hogan, Sting/NWO feud.

Also, I don't think you can include Surfer Sting without having some type of Ric Flair Rivalry from the 80s/90s. Obviously just having Sting period is great, I think you have to use him in some light in this new mode.

That never even crossed my mind and it's a good point, however with technology today and us obviously playing through the rivalry, I think taking actual commentary from that time could work.

I did an article like this a few weeks ago, I'd personally was hoping it would've been WCW vs WWF. I actually did something like this a few weeks ago going into a little more detail of that and other possible feuds. http://www.micoolfish.com/possibilities-for-wwe-2k15s-new-2k-showcase-mode/

Don't forget The Rock and HHH. Remember they had huge fueds going on with The Nation of Domination vs DX. Not to mention all the other fueds for intercontinental belt and of course the WWF belt.

If only this one can transpire: Taker/Angle. It was beautiful ring work between the both of them. Brock/Angle was also a good especially their WM match. Batista/HHH it wasn't much but that's one. Eddie/Rey but I guess that was more personal. Vince/Austin that was just fun lol. Stables DX/NOD without this there would be no Rock/HHH. Macho/Hulk it's always there. Lita/Trish only diva rivalry worth mentioning since they don't go too far back. Edge/Cena had pretty good ones. Foley/HHH & also being able to be his personas. That's all I can mention.

Undertaker vs Yokozuna - including the epic casket match

Hogan vs Macho Man - these two had more of an impact on wrestling's growth than anyone else.

Ric Flair vs Sting - two of the greatest WcW stars of all time.

Tazz vs Sabu - second greatest rivalry in ECW history, second only to:

Raven vs Tommy Dreamer - some of the best matches in ECW history.

Ric Flair vs Ricky Steamboat.

Hogan vs Rowdy Piper - a feud that lasted through multiple decades in multiple promotions.

Kane/Undertaker. The large span of years that we've seen battles between the two would stretch across 3 different eras.

Plus, there's the factor of having that big fight feel when you finally go one on one with each other, since really, they never faced off against each other all that much. And we could also have a Brothers of Destruction story line and fall out, leading to WMXX where the Deadman came back.

Think that could be special with Next-Gen graphics.

My top two would be Sting vs Flair and Rock vs Stone Cold Steve Austin OR Vinny Mac vs Stone Cold.

Give me Sting vs Big Van Vader, Rick Rude vs Ricky the dragon Steamboat, show us some old school rivalries

I'm extremely biased in wanting a Kane/Undertaker Rivalry in the game with Kane being my favorite superstar of all-time. IMO, the debut of Kane was one of the greatest debuts of all-time. They are two of the greatest big men of all-time and have been through a wide variety of matches that would make the Rivalry very fun to play.

Jake "The Snake" Roberts vs. Rick "The Model" Martel
Mr. Perfect vs. Kerry Von Erich "The Texas Tornado
CM Punk vs. Jeff Hardy
These are more to my taste, although the Mr Perfect/Von Erich rivalry lasted for about a cup of coffee. Flair vs Sting and Warrior vs Rude or Macho Man would be tits. I could even go for Flair/Steamboat.

Sting and Rude had a pretty good rivalry for quite a while in the early 90's. Could have the epic Halloween Havoc match that Sting wrestled on 1 leg. Have you start the match with 50% energy, and gimpy leg.

You mean you forgot that the WWE and 2k can't legally put 4 of the 6 superstars in the game.
