Pure Pool Hands-On Impressions

I had a chance to check out Pure Pool at E3 2014, and it looks to provide a slick game of billiards for PC, Xbox One and PS4. It certainly seems like it won't be lacking for features either, as it's got all sorts of career options, challenges, online hooks and even downloadable profiles (much like Forza 5's “drivatars”). The game comes from VooFoo Studios, developers of Hustle Kings, as well as publisher Ripstone.

The first thing I noticed was how well the game plays, as it's super intuitive to pick up a controller and get playing. You basically pull back on the right stick for power and push forward to take the shot, and there was a real tactile sense of weight and momentum on the shot stick. It was easy to add a bit of spin or “English” when needed, and the ability to hit the ball exactly where I wanted felt great. There was a guide line to show how the cue ball and target would go after the shot, but these got less precise the further away I got from the target ball, which seemed like a good compromise. It's also possible to turn off the guides completely, which will suit many purists, I'm sure. Still, as it was set on default, the game felt super breezy and enjoyable, and I was totally in control of what I was doing.

Pure Pool looks great as well, with beautifully detailed table felt (that can get chalk marks on it) and photo-realistic billiard balls. Even the background felt a lot more alive than in other billiard/poker/dart games, with a room that had some hustle and bustle. There is a neat little trick the game pulls when you're going for the eight ball, as the lights dim and focus on the shot. It looks like the focus mode from the underrated Table Tennis from Rockstar Games. The physics feel accurate to real-life billiards, with appropriate caroms and kisses off balls and some satisfying bounces off the rails. It's also worth nothing that the camera angle gets the action right down on the table, and it totally works. There isn't the detachment of top-down billiards, as has been the case in previous titles.

There seems to be a reasonable number of game types to play, including 8-ball, 9-ball and several other novelty variants. There are computer-controlled characters that have specific tendencies to play against, and there are a whole host of career tournaments and challenges to try and unlock. All of this is presented with a simple UI that pops out from the side of the screen, and it's really easy to change what you want to do on the fly. The minimalist nature of everything focuses the action on the pool while keeping everything looking classy.

There looks to be a whole host of multiplayer options in Pure Pool, including local multiplayer, online head-to-head multiplayer and downloadable “DNA” profiles that mimic the ways your friends play when they aren't around. The profiles concept sounds quite interesting, as it will track your play style and tendencies but also fun stuff like whether you choose high ball or low ball (stripes or solids).

Outlook

In talking to the developers of the game, it's clear they have a passion for making a good product. From what I was able to play, this looks like a fun downloadable that will provide a rock-solid billiards experience that also has legs. If they hit their goal price point of $10, I think it will be a strong proposition on any of the available platforms.

No overhead view... developers went for realism, and an overhead view isn't part of a "real" pool experience. You can walk around the table to check out angles and shot possibilities.

Just accepted, but I don't plan on winning a whole lot. It took me like 5 tries to finally win the first 8-ball amateur match in career, lol. Fun game, though.

These CPU guys don't play around, even on the lowest setting.

You can hold down square to stand up and move around, but that's the limit of extending your view.

The league thing isn't very fleshed out. I beat jyoung in a game and got an achievement for winning the league. I guess since we were the only two in it at the moment, one win was all that was needed. I don't know exactly how it would work if a bunch of us were signed up, though. I guess I shouldn't expect but so much from an arcade game.

I believe all it does it keep track of all-time wins and losses for games played under league rules. It seems like more of a leaderboard or a club than a true league.

The online play works really well. I couldn't feel any lag playing PappyKnuckles. It felt just like offline.

Aside from standard stripes/solids and 9-ball, there's also a "points" mode where you try to rack up the highest total ball numbers, and one other weird mode called "killer" that I've never heard of.

Also, as I found out the hard way, there is an achievement for hitting the cue ball off the table.

Edit: "Killer" mode is actually a lot of fun. You take turns shooting with the other player. You both start with 4 "lives," and you lose a life if your turn ends without scoring a ball. If you score more than one ball in a turn, you get an extra life. First player to run out of lives loses. Or if you run out of balls first, the player with the most lives wins. Fun mode!

Well, so far my only complaints are that the CPU is a bit slow to take their turn and the soundtrack, while good, is very repetitive.

Otherwise, this is a great pickup for pool fans at $10, unless you are really into trick shots, because this is just a straight pool simulation with no trick shot competitions.

Agreed on the CPU shot time, it seems like if they are really stumped they will take almost a minute to take a stab. I guess that's realistic, but ain't nobody got time fo' that.

Soundtrack I turned down so I could listen to my own music, so no big deal for me.

Computer AI is tough, but pretty fair. You can't be careless in your shots or you'll leave the table wide open, and the CPU is definitely capable of taking advantage. You have to use safety shots when there really isn't much there.

I've played a couple of the Speed Pot games in Career, and it is a lot of fun. Don't have much time to think about each shot, so you have to be quick on your feet and think several shots ahead.

Graphics are niiiiice. Haven't seen any issue with ball physics yet.

If anyone wants to get a game in, my PSN is MizzouTigerrr.

Are there actual player models in the game or is this just a first person perspective? Thanks in advance.

# 30 jyoung @ 07/29/14 08:31 PM
There are no visible player models, as the whole game is viewed from first-person.

Thank you kind sir. I was a little confused as I remember a teaser trailer actually showing a female winning a match.

Would be nice to have some trick shot DLC or something. Pretty sure Hustle Kings had that.

This computer dude Tyler Holt is killing me in the second 8-ball tournament where you have to win 2 out of 3. I can squeeze out a win against him, but he's not giving me this second one for anything. I'll have no choice but to improve if I want to hang in this game.

Yep, that's where I'm at too. I've won the first game twice, then blow a bunch of opportunities to win the next two games and fall flat on my face.

9-ball is a brutal game. A couple times, I've cleaned up the whole table except for the 9-ball, then I miss my 9-ball shot, and the CPU sneaks in there and takes the game on the next turn.

Anyone up for some league games now?

Hi quick question, can you turn off off the aim assist lines? If so can I play against others with it off? Thanks

# 38 jyoung @ 07/30/14 02:00 AM
The aiming assist lines are a result of your difficulty setting, which you can change from the "My Profile" screen.

Amateur = lots of assist
Pro = some assist
Master = almost no assist (just one tiny circle indicator)

One thing I am curious about is whether or not the online matchmaking is smart enough to pair people who have the same difficulty selected, because I know that on my end, I can set my difficulty to whatever I want when I go online. But I have found no way to tell what difficulty my online opponents are using.
