What did you think of the NHL 15 reveal and teaser trailer?
Chris Sanner: I was not expecting to see much from the teaser trailer and we didn't get much. Next-gen hockey is going to be pretty, that makes sense and was expected. I honestly can't wait to see some gameplay.
The new physics sound like they could be a winner as part of the whole EA Sports Ignite (is that still a thing?) next-gen platform. The skill stick could be interesting as well. The big thing I think I'm looking forward to though, apart from the physics will be the new commentary team, presentation package, and in-arena atmospheres. I'm optimistic for the ever solid and highly regarded NHL series on next-gen.
James Kerti: I feel lukewarm about the NHL 15 release. The trailer looks intriguing, but I feel like I know better by now than to trust the graphics in EA's teaser trailers as being representative of the actual game. I'm definitely interested in the physics developments, though I feel like every next gen sports game brags about having incredible physics engines that don't live up to expectations yet. The presentation upgrades do sound very promising though.
Robert Kollars: I am excited about the information that was released today, but with somewhat tempered expectations. I enjoy EA's NHL series very much, and while it may not be a hardcore simulation of the game, it's fun, and that's what I look for. I liked the trailer, but let's be honest, it was a bunch of quick, dramatic shots that showed nothing of substance when it comes to gameplay. People need to keep emotions intact either way until some actual gameplay videos drop. More importantly though, was the information that came with the trailer, and if EA correctly implements most of what was mentioned it will have a sure-fire hit on its hands.
Bottom-line, fans of the series need to keep in mind that the game is made for the masses, and when you don't have a massive following like the NFL, you have to attract gamers of all kinds. Hardcore fans of NHL gaming may hate the phrase "accessible to all" but the investors in these development companies, do not.
Glenn Wigmore: As I figured, EA released a fairly guarded trailer for the upcoming NHL 15, but they did accompany it with a reasonable amount of info about specifics (especially in this article on GameInformer). I'm certainly glad the team took an extra year to prepare some of the more advanced presentation stuff that was talked up, but of course, we won't really know how it all gels until we see some gameplay.
As with many other folks, I'm glad to see a new commentary group, and it's even cooler that they've got the three-man team actually represented in the game (using green screens), rather than silly avatars. The "Living Worlds" stuff sounds fairly similar to what FIFA 14 did, with more detail in the crowds, better wide shots of arenas, higher-res textures and some added emotion. The improvements to player likenesses (using EA Sports UFC tech) and equipment also sounds similar to FIFA 14 on next-gen, which is a good thing. I hope they take that stuff even further than FIFA did, though.
More intriguingly, the AI and physics upgrades sound very cool, with some similarities to FIFA (four-man headers, anyone?). I'm glad to hear the dev team talk up player awareness (keeping their head up, stick down, etc.) and puck support along the boards, and some of the pile-ups in front of the net and puck deflections through jerseys and the like sound really entertaining. I notice they didn't really talk about defense, hitting, fighting or goalies, which is a bit curious, but I'm sure we'll hear more soon. I'm certainly pleased by a lot of what I heard.
Jayson Young: Simply put, I can't wait until September. EA NHL is the sports series I've played the most on the Xbox 360, despite the fact that it hasn't made many meaningful improvements since NHL 09 introduced the six versus six EA Sports Hockey League.
Finally, we've got the two commentators, Doc Emrick and Eddie Olczyk, who call most of America's televised NHL games, plus the polarizing Pierre McGuire has been relieved of his bench duties by the more likable Ray Ferraro.
The gameplay's biggest weakness, idiotic AI behavior, has received a marketing bullet point in "Vision AI," making me hopeful that the on-ice action will play more like real hockey and less like the end-to-end, one-on-six deke-fest that NHL 14 became.
Here's to hoping that, this fall, hockey fans are given another revolutionary start to a new console generation, just like NHL 07, NHL 08 and NHL 09 were.
