Madden NFL: The Best 2014 Free Agents

Free agency begins, will the Broncos be able to get over the hump?

Free Agency is the drug that keeps us football fanatics sane during the offseason, and it begins today! This year, the signing period becomes even more important to us because the NFL Draft has been pushed back to May, forcing the suspense rise on who your favorite team will be taking in the first round. So with this upcoming free agency let's go all in and enjoy it while it lasts. I've chosen ten free agents and placed them on the Madden team with the best fit. This isn't necesarily where they'll end up once it's all said and done, but that's why the suspense is worth it: we get to banter back and forth about topics like this.

Lamarr Houston | DE | Oakland Raiders | Best FA Fit: Houston Texans
Assuming that Houston decides to go with a quarterback who throws touchdowns for a team other than the opposing one, Lamarr Houston would be a perfect fit because of his play style and name. He brings speed off the corner opposite of JJ Watt, which will force opposing quarterbacks to run out of the pocket creating broken plays. And from most Madden experiences, users online won’t perform that well when under pressure the way they think. Can you say interception?

Jared Allen | DE | Minnesota Vikings | Best FA Fit: Seattle Seahawks
The Seahawks are coming off a most impressive Super Bowl showing by shutting down Peyton Manning with their insane pass rush. After resigning Michael Bennett on Monday, Seattle can focus on replacing the other defensive end position. With the lack of Chris Clemons, Allen would fit in perfectly on this terrorizing Madden defensive unit, with his size and speed almost a near-perfect blend of Clemons and the departed Red Bryant. The Legion of Boom will add some country to the madness.

Golden Tate | WR | Seattle Seahawks | Best FA Fit: New Orleans Saints
Much of the Saints passing game in Madden involves the deep pass as well as the tight routes brought to you by Marques Colston. With Colston declining, Tate could be a perfect replacement while adding his own personal dynamic to a fleeting receiving corp. And we all know Drew Brees can find anyone open … it’s the YAC that being to matter here.

Aqib Talib | CB | New England Patriots | Best FA Fit: Jacksonville Jaguars
Jacksonville has holes anywhere you look on their roster, and adding Talib would help them begin reaping some sort of benefits as early as next year. With Kendall Wright, T.Y. Hilton and Andre Johnson running routes in the AFC South, the Jags need someone to stop them. Plus, with two unproven pass throwers and Andrew Luck, coverage couldn’t be more important for these cats.

Alterraun Verner | CB | Tennessee Titans | Best FA Fit: Arizona Cardinals
If you’re sick of hearing about the Seahawks and 49ers, you’re probably a Cardinals fan. And if you’re a Cardinals fan, then you know better than anyone that your team is actually pretty dang good. Placing Verner on the opposite side of Patrick Patterson would be huge in a division with some shakey signal callers. Buffing up this defense should be a top priority, especially with how tough those Niners and Hawks play.

Jairus Byrd | S | Buffalo Bills | Best FA Fit: Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles have a horrid secondary, Chip Kelly use to coach Byrd at Oregon, and the team has some money to spend. Philadelphia passed on Earl Thomas years ago, and the team has yet to recover in the draft. It’s time for them to put their money where their mouth is and upgrade the safety position with a known commodity. .

Eric Decker | WR | Denver Broncos | Best FA Fit: New England Patriots
Decker was the fourth or fifth target on the NFL’s greatest offense last season. When the attention is on Demaryius Thomas, Julius Thomas, Wes Welker, and, at times, Knowshon Moreno, of course you’ll get good looks. So Decker won’t be able to produce at his known level anywhere else in the NFL; unless you’re catching passes from Tom Brady. Brady wants weapons, is still pissed about Welker, and it makes for one of the first story lines when you pop open Connected Careers in Madden 15. Make it happen!

Karlos Dansby | LB | Arizona Cardinals | Best FA Fit: Tennessee Titans
The Titans have no pass rush to speak of, and it begins with the front seven. The defensive line can hold it’s own with Jurrell Casey and Derrick Morgan, but the linebacker position is awful. With the lackluster play from some highly touted college players (I’m looking at you, Akeem Ayers and Colin McCarthy), the linebacker position is now a top need. Dansby has connections with Ken Whisenhunt, the new man in charge, so this wouldn't be a surprise at all; it just happens to make sense at the same time.

Michael Vick | QB | Philadelphia Eagles | Best FA Fit: Oakland Raiders
This is the most obvious choice on the list, but it can’t be ignored. Gamers still try and party with Vick like it’s 2004. Put him on a team that loves speed so much that it ignores other areas of need and you have the perfect virtual fit! However, Vick will definitely needs some help from the skill positions…

Chris Johnson | RB | Tennessee Titans | Best FA Fit: Oakland Raiders
… enter CJ .005K! A Johnson and Vick backfield would garner Oakland instant Madden street cred. With all of this speed waiting to be unleashed, the Raiders might make the playoffs in your online franchise. And I know I’m jumping the gun since Johnson isn’t technically a free agent yet, but let’s be honest here: Tennessee is ready to move on regardless if it’s a trade or break up.

Which free agent to you hope your team picks up this offseason?

I'd be shocked if New England opened their wallet to Eric Decker. He's a decent WR1-2, but he'll want to be paid as a WR1, and if there's anything we've learned since 2001, the Patriots will not pay a WR1 salary. They'll bring in guys who are looking to win at a reduced salary (Randy Moss, Chad Johnson), or less known players and hope to develop them into impact players (it worked with Wes Welker, has not worked with Danny Amendola), but they won't pay for a WR1. I think that Golden Tate would be a more likely result for NE, but even then, I think he'll want too much money for New England and they'd rather draft a cadre of league-minimum rookies than potentially over-pay for a free agent WR.
