NBA 2K14: It's Time to Revamp Presentation

Despite the struggles that NBA 2K is facing right now, the development team has still hit it home with presentation and commentary the past few years. The team of Kevin Harlan and Clark Kellogg, with recent additions Steve Kerr and Doris Burke, has become the so-called Holy Grail of sports video game commentary and everyone knows it. But when will 2K set the bar even higher? Even though they’re the best doesn’t mean that they can’t be better, which is exactly what they should do.

In NBA 2K14, the commentary is slowly becoming – dare I say it – stale.

After playing so many games it’s what should be expected, but hearing the same lines over and over, especially when you play quick game on next-gen (andhalf the time it’s all you can do). But my biggest gripe with the commentary lies after the first 82 games – the playoffs.

The NBA Playoffs, to any die-hard hoops junkie, is a three-month long Holiday event. The world’s best athletes on the world’s biggest stage. It reeks of epic. So shouldn’t everything about 2K’s playoffs be just as epic? The stadium crowd and sounds have definitely improved after atmosphere used to be one of the series’ biggest problems, but now it’s safe to say that we need more. That’s where adding more postseason-specific commentary comes into play. Commentary from the season, our season, that just finished.

The announcers don’t make a Game 6 feel like a Game 6. Hell, they don’t even make you feel the pressure of an elimination game. All four of 2K’s broadcasters show great emotion during other moments during the game, but that needs to be ramped up to a brand new level once the postseason stretch begins. As a Game 7 progresses, I want to hear the booth talk about how Miami staved off elimination because of Ray Allen’s gorgeous, career-defining moment. I want to see these storylines that we create in our Association (or My GM) matter when the game is being played. Don’t you want to hear people talk about how you changed the course of the NBA? You're a gamer with stick skills. Be proud of your own career-defining moments.

Take-Two is showing signs of life from a presentation stand point, though. In 2K14 on next-gen, the Real Voices are a nice touch even if it needs a lot of work. And I’ve been told that we can expect major improvements with RV as the series progresses further. Possibly as soon as next year.

The series should also revamp the overall presentation we see so often during games. On the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the integration of the overlays during gameplay become a nuisance and feel laggy. And it gets old when you have to see the same rebounding leaders game after game – switch it up a bit more? I remember a day when skipping through the added tidbits was rarely done. Now, not so much.

What NBA 2K built on the last-gen consoles was created from a solid foundation and turned into the best NBA sports series to date. Now it’s time to take that finished product from last-gen and have it become the foundation of next-gen. And it all starts with the NBA Playoffs, and allowing you to be able to feel the pressures and thrills of a Game 7.

What would you like to see added, or changed, in NBA 2K’s presentation and commentary?

Yes, we need more realistic camerawork and cuts that add to the narrative. I would think this would be relatively easy to do.

Other additions:

Replays on threes.
Replays of scores after successful dribble moves/ankle breakers, especially those that make the crowd ooh and ahh.
Replays of blocks and steals.
Replays of earlier moments on fouls and dead balls.
Replays of close foul calls.

Post-game highlight reels should be brought back like 2K12 and 2K11. It should be played automatically instead of Player of The Game, or perhaps one of the two should be picked randomly and both should be available in the post-game wrap up screen.

Also, post-game highlights MUST be fixed for full length games. It's a bit silly that highlights work for 48 minute games on CG but not NG which has way more memory. It feels somewhat unprofessional/unpolished when 2K14 NG doesn't have highlights for actual NBA length games.

And we MUST be able to save replays again!

You say things I greatly favor. Watching highlights, breaking down highlights, editing highlights, and saving highlights were all a huge part of feeling as though the game I just played meant something. I liked leaving a footprint. Also, I don't think an NBA simulation could ever go wrong with emulating real life when it comes to their highlights reels, replays, and overall presentation. Real life emulation, in fact, is the direction for which I am hopeful 2K fully begins to lean once again (on the court and off).

it would take time and effort but i think 2k should work out a license with to have home game commentators (knick games get frazier and breen, celtics mike and tommy...etc)

it would DRASTICALLY improve presentation, sure it would take time to get voice overs done from all these guys but it would be one of the greatest things done in sports gaming history imo

I think if they got the TNT license it would help with the presentation. Also another little thing they can do is during halftime actually show other games that are currently playing and what the score is. The way they have it now is they just show you the match ups.

Maybe get another set of announcers or sign a deal with the officials to make each game feel different. If making the game similar to what we're seeing on TV (ESPN, ABC & TNT) I think it's hard to add anything else and we would just be nit-picking.

Exactly. I had a huge library of saved replays for 2K13. It was a shock I wasn't able to save them in NG 2K14 and definitely lessed my ability to relish my games and feeling like they had some persistence. At least with the XBox One, I can just ask my XBox to "record that", but it's missing sound and not the same thing as having a real interactive replay.

Now I can understand some casuals might not dig replays on fouls since the ref is always right according to 2K, so maybe they can add options to turn some replay types off, but it really should be available for the presentation to feel like a real broadcast.

More additions-- out of bounds replays when the ball is rapidly touched by one player than another, or two are in close proximity.

Replays of goal-tending calls.

Replays of NON foul calls that were close.

Replays of plays that lead to an injury (half the time I don't even see the injury occur and have no idea what happened).

Replays of difficult, contested shots when the game is close or the making team has momentum.

Game winners and buzzer beaters MUST be replayed right after quick shots of players celebrating. It's amazing it isn't.

Potential game winners in the last seconds should also be replayed even if they are not especially difficult/interesting shots, and key shots near end of game should be replayed going into a time out.

Replays of nice plays during the halftime show (pick-and rolls, horns, floppys, ball movement, etc.)

Of course the announcers should also comment during all these replays about what they think and see.

I'd also love replays where the foot is close to the line (though 3-pointers in 2K are often actually 2-pointers, and footwork around the arc is glitchy so 2K probably won't want to call attention to that). And I'd really love replays to review earlier close 3-point/2-point shots and a score adjustment but I can see why a game designer who wants straight forward scorekeeping might not like that.

As far as Real Voice goes, it'd be great to have post-game interviews from the media table for Playoffs. I know they would have less interviews to sample from but it's something that would really give a Playoff feel and take the next step.

Speaking of which, media table style interviews should NOT be used for regular season games in MyCareer. They should be conducted on court or in the locker room.

I don't get comments like these. When comparing the two games, or just strictly talking about Live, you guys bash it so hard.

But then you take a look at the 2k forum and outside of the graphical feats, nothing is liked that much about 2k. Trade logic, tipped balls, weird animations, player attributes, draft logic, roster updates, CPU ISO, running circles till it gets in paint, CPU rebounding, "comeback AI" (let's just say basically all aspects of gameplay).

So isn't 2k really still trying to make a basketball game too?

Let's be real, both franchises are slacking.

# 28 turty11 @ 01/06/14 05:17 PM
where do you see me bashing EA?

EA has the espn license, and as long as they continue the live series they probably will, 2k CANT get ESPN

Just get Bob Fitzgerald and Jim Barnett of the Warriors. They're local to 2K and Barnett is retiring this year so may be available. They can also get Tom Tolbert if he takes of Barnett's job.

2k has done an excellent job with presentations.

I'd just like to see more stat overlays, during free throws etc. Id like like to see a player's stat line during free throws.

Id also like the commentary to idle down a bit at times. A broadcast team doesn't have to continuously talk.

especially now that you can no longer get stat overlay with the d-pad

I was floored by the presentation at first, but after a month solid, it IS getting repetitive. Not a big deal, though. The only thing that still bugs me from a presentation perspective is the menus. I got used to 'em, sure, but they look so bad.

As far as 2K needing to "revamp" their presentation all together, if the next gen experience is any indicator this forum has shown precious little patience in 2K revamping anything. When 2K tried to integrate Clark Kellogg into the game it took a few years before they got rid of the fluctuations in tone and the commentary flowed seamlessly.

When Kerr was integrated it went more smoothly, but it shouldn't be assumed any revamp would occur without issues. As it is now it sounds like all of the guys are in the same room commenting on the action occurring on the court, which imo is pretty remarkable not only from a front-facing presentation standpoint but also from a technological standpoint. Even the integration of the halftime commentary is really well done imo, in the way he comments on what's occurred in the first half and also comments on games either in progress or that have finished. AND it's integrated into NBA Today games, where you get updates during each half.

I haven't seen the Real Voice stuff they added with next gen but with that implementation 2K's shown they aren't resting on their laurels. Hell, a few years ago 2K went the extra mile (I'd say several miles) and added era-specific presentation which was well done - and has been largely forgotten/ignored by this board.

And they're the ones being singled out for presentation having grown stale? I get wanting to see improvement, which we all do. But singling them out as having stale presentation feels a bit like saying I'm tired of my team winning the Super Bowl every year

imo
Yes to Everything Spank just said.

If you want to talk about presentation, talk about The Show needing presentation, 2K has hands down the best sports presentation, but this just seems like piling on at this point.

It's like mentioning something negative about a game that's already having a tough time to get forum responses or Internet hits.

Warms up for classic players
Classic paint before 1998 and classic 3pt line for 95 to 97 season
Glasses of horace grant not blue with the bulls please!!
No glasses for 94 dream olajuwon
Glasses for worthy
Better free throw sig for ron harper, malone, kemp
Better hair style for scott williams.

Nba 2k11 is the only game that represents the classic nba.
2k12 there was just the legend mode which made me dream so i couldn't dream if i played in the united center 96 vs the magic, or the final 95. Furthermore grant glasses was white ... Terrible.
I'm still thinking that the size court is too much small.
Music arena and crowd are not sim. Big big improvment to do for this.

I watched a video on youtube of Jordan after he made a jumpshot and he was happy and reacted like a current player. It was really missing his representation.
Sometimes he makes a lay up like tony parker, and after he loose his balance as he will fall, it is not good.

Not a huge deal, but this might be the single most random thing about NBA 2K14. 2K by and large ignored anything and everything regarding their classic teams (besides the fact of them existing), yet they seemed to go out of their way to give the 1994 Hakeem Olajuwon a defining accessory he only wore briefly three years earlier? How in the world did that come about?

It had to have played out something like this at 2K headquarters, right?:

"Okay, so classic teams, everything status quo? Just carry them over as-is from the current generation product?"

"Yes, that is correct."

"Alright, I'm on it."

"Wait... maybe give 1994 Hakeem Olajuwon a pair of goggles."

"But sir, that doesn't even make sens..."

"JUST DO IT!"

agreed. i'd rather have this than showing some random overlay of best all time shot blockers that has nothing to do with the game.

2k's presentation is incredible! The fact that you are spoiled by constantly experiencing new images and video and entertainment all over the internet shouldn't mask you from having realistic expectations in quality. But apparently it does.

You asking for 2k to step up it's game is selfish and wrong. I can understand you not wanting to see a Madden scenario of the same game being thrown out there w/ a couple new features every year but 2k jumped ahead so far in presentation and overall gameplay a couple years ago that i think if anyone deserves a pass it's them.

The Show and 2k are fantastic games and i will not critique them when every other studio and sporting franchise is so flawed.
Don't be a 2k fanboy, he's right, it can use some improvement, isit better than madden and most other sports titles? Of course, doesn't mean it don't need more work.

# 39 Jakeness23 @ 01/06/14 08:35 PM
I just don't understand why they have to stop the game to show league leaders (and c'mon every game? Who cares) It's just not very realistic. I honestly don't know if I've ever seen in a live broadcast that they show the league leaders in every major category, yet in 2K, you see it EVERY SINGLE GAME. And it just slows the game down. The commentary is also very, VERY boring. I just don't feel immersed in the game like I do with other games, like The Show for instance.

I just want them (NBA 2K) to get online servers correct, not tied to heavy VC grinding, with standard modes we have become accustomed to, and online/offline leagues and editing back in place, BEFORE graphic or presentation overhauls.

The great presentation they have given us over the years is just icing on the cake at this point, and detracts from bigger issues with the game. Presentation commentary, stat layers, etc. and can be added in, like EA has been doing with their "subpar", but fun entry into NBA gaming, but smooth online should be a standard in 2014 from a game that's been online 15yrs.

They should not be let off the hook on the numerous next gen shortcomings, and the OP has chosen the wrong topic for "improvements" IMO.

To retort a previous statement, The Show's stat layer presentations actually update game by game, play by play. (2K does it after after game 10, and before that continually shows last year's stat lines, and talks about what players did last year IRL in MYGM/Season modes all too often.

IMO, The show becomes repetitive after 80+ games with the same team, 2K14 after about 20.
