PlayStation 4 Console Review

It was over ten years ago when I purchased an Xbox, based solely on the availability of one game: World Series Baseball. I was amazed by the graphical fluidity, realistic ballparks, and features (like managing staff) that couldn’t be found elsewhere.

Last summer, I found myself in a similar position. Just as I had done in 2002, I made a console purchase based almost entirely on the availability of baseball games. I preordered a PS4.

Now, having spent a weekend with the new console, do I feel that this decision -- regardless of future baseball availability -- was a good one? Should you jump on board the next generation with Sony’s new console? Is the PS4 even a good console as a whole?

The answer, unfortunately, is a resounding “maybe.”

I say “maybe” because the launch line-up is pretty limited, despite a large percentage of sports games. “Maybe” because the console, while being primarily a gaming machine, feels a little barren and limited. And “maybe” because the PS4’s potential, at this point, far outweighs its current value.

PS4 Console

Upon receipt of the console, I was initially surprised by how small the packaging was. Once I had everything set up, I was pleased with how nice the machine looked. The PS4 is truly a sleek and futuristic looking box.

It was also a breeze to set-up. The Day 1 patch installed much more quickly than I predicted, and the initialization procedures were simple and direct. I had no issues getting the PS4 connected to my network.

The controller is the best part of the device. It feels weighty and comfortable, and the sticks and buttons are really responsive. I haven’t needed to use the touchpad yet, but the motion controls work and are well utilized in games like Battlefield.

The user interface is elegant, and feels like a natural evolution of the crossbar found on the PS3. I especially like the transition from game to home screen and the ability to suspend games. The standby mode is also a nice change from the cold startup and shutdown found on the PS3. All told, the PS4 does a great job of getting you up and gaming as quickly as possible.

But gaming is about all you will be doing with this machine. Initially, I didn’t think that would be an issue; I do like that the PS4 is primarily a gaming device, without the advertisements and options that litter the 360’s homescreen.

However, in a weekend, I’ve found enough missing or “not yet supported” features to make me miss my PS3. For instance, while it plays Blu-rays, it won’t play 3D Blu-rays. I don’t have a ton of 3D films, but those I have are, for the time being, worthless. Sony hasn’t confirmed the eventual inclusion of this tech, simply saying it’s not available at launch.

I also used my PS3 as a streaming device. The PS4 won’t stream anything, except using supported apps, like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Even importing mp3 and CDs is not possible. Hopefully, this is corrected in time to make custom stadium sounds for MLB The Show. USB memory sticks don’t do anything either.

Look, I realize that there are a number of devices that do what I am looking for, including the PS3. I just don’t like the feeling of taking a step back or needing to by a second device to replicate what the PS3 did.

Again, the potential is there. 3D games are supported (though not available), and with the ability for consoles to upgrade core software, I suppose any of these features can be added later.

Games

At this point, I have played NBA 2K14, Madden 25, FIFA 14, Battlefield 4, and LEGO Marvel Superheroes. NBA, FIFA, and Battlefield all look particularly good; even Marvel Superheroes has a nice shiny, plastic-y look that feels like a definite step up from past LEGO games. And for all of Madden’s faults, there are moments where the game truly looks like a next generation title.

However, none of these titles really grabbed me the way past launch titles did, from NFL 2K to Project Gotham Racing 3. Yes, they look good and contain new features, but none of these games do anything truly special that we haven’t seen before (besides, perhaps Battlefield's 32v32, but alas, I can’t stay logged on long enough to experience it).

That doesn’t mean these are bad games or that I won’t spend a lot more time with them. Again, they look and play spectacularly. It’s just, at this point, I don’t feel as if any of these games really sell the console or make it the “must-have” console of 2013’s holiday season. To be fair, I haven’t played any first-party games or those designed exclusively for the system (Killzone).

However, the potential is there for some truly great games that push the boundaries and ultimately usher us in to the next generation. All launches tend to be a little rough, and with enough time, the PS4 will most likely generate some great titles.

Final Thoughts

I don’t regret buying the PS4, especially as I had been waiting to play Madden, NBA, and Battlefield on a next-gen system. It does what it’s designed for (playing games) very well, allowing one to quickly get into a game using an intelligently designed UI. The controller is among the best ever made, and the console is a graphical powerhouse.

However, if you have these games on a current system, there may be no real need to rush out and buy this system right away. And, if you are on the fence regarding system choice, it may be wise to wait and see how the Xbox One performs.

For all of the “maybe”s and “if’s” surrounding the PS4 launch, one this is certain: come Spring, there will only be one console for baseball. For some, like me, that's the only question that truly needs an answer.

I think this is a pretty fair review. Basically the same thoughts i have. It has A LOT of potential, but that's what it is right now, potential. Down the line i think this machine will be great.

No one buys a new system specifically for the launch titles. When you make this purchase you understand this is a 3 to 4 year investment(PS4 OR Xbox One). I purchased a PS4 at launch knowing the games I want to play will be available in the near future(MLB the Shoe,Infamous,Uncharted and others). Just realize the system you have today won't be the same you have in 1 year with all the updates and media additions. All you have to do is look at the past generation and see how both companies improved the machines for the better for the customers. It's your opinion but just want others to step back and realize a new system isn't made or broken just on launch day alone.

I bought the ps4 for Christmas for me to play so I can't wait to play it. I am a diehard baseball fan but mlb the show wasn't even on the list of reasons why I chose the ps4, its just icing on the cake.

I think this is like getting a Nuru Massage. At first youre like, "this isnt really my cup of tea" but then as that hot oil drizzles down your back, youre thinking "Oh its just getting good!"

Great article and agree. I also have the PS4 for the 3 following reasons:
MLB the Show -
Netflix streaming - although the XBX1 has it too, i use the PS4 for it as well as all BD movies we watch
The eventual Uncharted franchise that will pop up and be awesome -
I am a sucker for new tech

Cool read I want to see game developers review these new consoles and hear their thoughts.

When I think next gen, I think of something different and groundbreaking. Not the same video game experience Ive had since I got nes for christmas back in the 80's. I get ps4 insides are superior (wasnt ps3s too) but xbox one seems different in a good way.

Those Xbox features are a lot of fluff like with Smart TVs. At first they wow u then all u want is the core reason u bought it, ur regular ole TV. Lol. The real difference under the PS4 hood is for what gaming consoles were made for to begin with - Videogames.

As for the 4, like someone said, it's basically an 'investment'. Both systems are. It's about u want out of the systems as u ride the cycle. Sony's first party/exclusives are unmatched and to see their franchises get taken to a new level with a tons more powerful system is what I look forward to so my 4 is awaiting when I get home to pop in another new game that got delivered today. For me there is no maybe. It's most def with this system and I'm certain Sony will patch in the fluff as time goes on but their initial focus was GAMING!

Your last sentence says it all for me. Fair evaluation overall though. I play sports games exclusively and play them offline so the ps4 will be my primary acquisition, and my launch 360 still running like a raped ape w/vga connection will suffice.

Not trying to start a console war or arument here but I am really torn over the idea of the xboxone offering something "new and ground breaking". On one hand the xboxone does offer unique features never seen on a console before. Voice commands, "snap" options, tv, etc are brand new and change the idea of a video game console into a true all-in-one entertainment machine. It also makes the xboxone appealing to an audience beyond gamers.

Now here is where I get torn. While these features are cool and offer something new, I don't see how exactly these features are changing or improving my video game experience? So, for example, the ps4 controller has the touch pad and the light bar, which can be used in conjunction with the camera, that can be used for new gameplay features or functions in games. The xbox one, of course, has the kinect which will offer voice command and motion abilities but, imo, we've been there and tried it before and it all came off a little gimmicky. The kinect funtions also rely on the accuracy of detecting your voice and movement. If that isn't working properly then we arent improving gameplay. At least with something like the touchpad we know its going to worl when you click it or swipe your finger in the proper direction.

Both consoles, at the moment, are a wait and see. Neither system has a must have game yet. The xbox one's kinect still has a lot to prove as does sonys camera and new cotroller features. Perhaps most importantly, and this was touched on in the article, are the features that aren't there yet that can be updated. Who knows what these consoles will be in a year +. I own a ps4 and I would recommend to anyone that has yet to buy a console, and isn't 100% sold just yet, to wait it out. Wait for system availability, games, maybe even price drop.

This is why I cancelled my preorder. None of the launch titles are truly earthshattering must haves.

I think this just proves that it's way too early to say which console is better. That's why I'm waiting until sometime next year (or later) to step up to the next gen (though I am leaning towards returning to Sony.)

Interesting that the reviewer did not play the two PS4 exclusive games... Killzone and Knack. More so Killzone is really impressive. But as anyone should know all the best games come out at least a year after.

I agree with a lot of points but not when it says that if you have the games on the previous version you don't need to upgrade. I have played NBA2k14 and there is no way that I will ever touch the PS3 version. Yes, like all the games there are wrong things about it, but the PS4 version is just insane. It plays very well and it is beautiful to look at. Besides, I love the new MyPlayer and MyGM version, so inmersive!!

I dont care about the bells and whistles honestly because both systems will look graphically similar in most respects and similar in power out put, i just want a system that excels at matchmaking and creating a social experience thats better than last gen. Yeah exclusive titles will play a role in my choice also.

Love sports games and FPS. But I am 36 now and admittedly want more for my money then a simple gaming system. So I got the new Xbox. One of my co workers bought his ps4 in to workand showed it off during some down time (yea I know we got a easy job lol) When he put in Battlefield we were all like meh. So I would say this to anyone on the fence; if your a straight up playstation guy or just a gamer overall you might as well wait. Hold on to your PS3 or computer. For me, Xbox just took gaming to a level never seen before. I dont know what I did before I got this thing but I never want to go back. Watching TV and managing my lineup in NBA 2k at the same time??? Priceless.

A video game console was meant to be an escape from everyday life and a change of pace from normal TV or radio. When I play my videogames, thats all I want to do. No cellphone, no radio, no TV, just the immersive game and myself. People bragging about Xbox 1 and its ability to link multiple forms of communication and entertainment kind of ruins the traditional view for what I believe video games to be. If you really have to be able to adjust rosters while you watch TV to enjoy your experience, then god help you. I am not saying that it is not a cool technological feat, its AMAZING, but the PS4 was built for the purist in mind and in my humble opinion after a few years and all of the first party games, it will destroy the organic gaming experience of the x box. take your fancy voice snap commands, Im playing games to play games, not to multitask

Y would it destroy the XBox? I hear you bro, not into multi tasking or whatever. To me thats like having a camera, a cd player, a computer, a cordless housephone, while you read your newspaper lol. Me I'll just chill on my iphone 5. The real question is why should I get rid of my PS3 and get a PS4? Or why should I get rid of my 360 for an XBox 1? Everthing you said I can do with my PS3 or my 360. Why do I need to spend four or five hundred more if thats all I wanted to do?

I thought the final review of the PS4 was pretty spot on. I do however don't agree with the fact the some reviews kinda bash on how the PS4 does not support other features/is only a gaming device. For me that's the reason why I went with PS4 or xbox, when I purchase a game system that's what I want it to do and could care less about Netflix and ect.....I want my gaming experience to be about gaming. The launch titles yes are not THAT great but are good and will hold me over until otherwise. MLB the show and The Division are the titles that I'm waiting for. Yes the features on Xbox are pretty impressive and that's all they are to me nothing to make me run out and buy a system nore make me want it. All in all I'm happy with the PS4 and my experience has been good so far.

Great & honest review which is very much appreciated! I bought my ps3 one year after launch solely for mlb the show. At one point i also had an xbox 360 but those days are over for me with the addition of 2 little girls! I traded in my 360 for credit towards the ps4 eventually & my ps3 the same after I'm done with nhl 14. However, used my xbox credit for the new kindle for my 3 yr old so there goes that LOL! I am gonna wait to see how the ps4 performs but i have a feeling when the show releases in april I'm gonna pull the trigger!
