NBA 2K14 on Next-Gen Extended Impressions

At first glance, I fell in love with NBA 2K14. The graphics are golden, the gameplay is near identical to a fantastic current-gen release, and My GM has all of the potential in the world. Safe to say, the hype seems well worth it and necessary for 2K's first next-gen conquest.

I say near identical for a few reasons. During gameplay, a lot of classic 2K bugs have resurfaced. Players are morphing into one another; Ray Allen is standing out of bounds in the corner and won't move; passing turns the ball over more than it should (this may be more of a realism factor than anything, so don't freak out yet).

These issues can be a game-killer, but 2K fixed all of these problems in the past so I fully expect them to fix these in the coming months with a series of patches, especially after they told me they are currently working on the game's second patch. No timetable for the release of the patch as of yet, though.

Other than those issues, the gameplay is exactly what you'd expect out of 2K. Everything from current gen is in, including flashy passes. Momentum feels like it's changed a little bit, or the maybe player weight isn't accounted for as much as it has in the past. Iso moves will leave you grinning from ear-to-ear after you break your roommate's ankles (or vice-versa).

Eco-Motion makes each game seem different, and it's noticeable. Russell Westbrook beat Kyrie Irving on a breakaway dunk for and and-1, and later in the same quarter Irving was able to prevent Westbrook from doing the same, stripping the ball out of bounds.

But the beauty lies in the third interaction: when Westbrook and Irving were pitted in the same situation (I'm like Tony Wroten - turnovers are my vice), Westbrook pulled up for his signature jumper (you know, the one he takes all the time but really shouldn't) rather than attempt to go to the bucket around Irving.

Server Issues

But I do have gripes so far, and it lies around 2K's servers and how they respond to a less than stellar internet connection.

I've had issues with the servers since the day after plugging in the PlayStation 4 - but that's my fault. Any time I connected to the servers, the loading process would never come to an end, or the file would load incompletely. Each time I had to restart the application.

I originally thought something happened with the game's installation. I uninstalled, re-installed, and everything worked again for an evening. I was wrong. I lowered my Internet speed to 15-20 mbs from 40-50 mps the day after release. It saved me enough money to justify the downgrade, and 20 mps has never been slow, but it also killed my experience with 2K.

With the already shotty servers being slow and troublesome to begin with, anything less than a solid connection can kill these game modes. I figured this out by switching over to Need for Speed: Rivals and not being able to do anything with online racers. This morning I upgraded my Internet back to where it was, and the servers started working OK once more. I've quickly learned that not needing Internet to play on the new generation of consoles is an absolute farce.

The full review for NBA 2K14 will release this weekend. Now that I have the capabilities to play the game modes, I can dig deep and see what might be inside this Pandora's Box.

Is it true that it's easier to make patches for next gen systems?

Yeah this internet problem really sucks. I will NOT be buying NBA 2k14 because you have to have a very good internet connection to play the game at all. I can't afford the fastest speed from Verizon and faster speeds from others are not available in my area. I think MANY gamers are in my situation and it really sucks especially if you have been a dedicated gamer for many years.

these comments are really worrying....out here in the UK we don't have as fast internet as you guys. i have 15-20mbps and that is fast for here !! online shooters are fine with this so why then is this going to be a problem for me to play this game ?? i only want to play offline !!!!

Uh, im running on 11mbps per second, and i have smooth gaming on my ps4. word of advice? do a manual connection when connecting your internet to your ps4 and set your DNS to point to google, 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. You should eliminate most of your problems regardless of your speed.

Maybe you can My GM and My career offline but not being able to play a Quick game offline is idiotic and is the reason I will be getting a game other than NBA 2k14 for Christmas.

Anyone having issues rebounding with a center. I created a 7'2" center and all of his rebounding attributes are maxed and he has the tenacious rebounding skill, but everytime I try to grab a rebound it seems like jumping takes forever. And I only grab like 4 or 5 rebounds per game. Really frustrating stuff.

I've had that issue in 2K13. I was a 7' 2" center with maxed out stats but I would be out rebounded by shorter players. Then I did a play through with someone 6'10" 6'11" and I average at least 10 rebounds per game.

I noticed it feels like somebody is pulling them down lol

Might be when they're tired?

Personally, I think this is by far the best basketball game I ever played. yes, it lacks some features this year, but it is the best on the court I ever saw. Loving it, and I am very thankful they built such a awesome game from the ground up for this gen. This is one of the few release consoles that actually has next gen graphics and gameplay

Finally someone calls out 2k on its Morphing BS...this is unacceptable when developing a new engine...until they fix it im done with 2K! Fanboys defended 2k with the "its not possible with the engine" in current gen...but this is Next-Gen...get your act together 2k!!!!!!

It's sad that 2k gives us great games, but then does absolutely dumb things to annoy us. Why is it so hard for them to have just decent, DECENT servers? It's been years but they still don't no crap aboutservers, and then to put extra crap on those terrible servers, why did they feel the need to make everything about VC, because of it, everything is on the servers, EVERYTHING! it's dumb. Also why take out regular create a player? Why? Why do I have to download than upload and download custom rosters just to use it? And mygm won't even let me use custom rosters.... Anyone else having that last problem I mention?

From what I've seen the morphing/clipping issues don't bother me too bad. I do still hope they can improve upon it.
