Super Goal Run Interview

A couple of weeks ago, we wrote about Super Goal Run's quest to bring 8-bit football back to life via their Kickstarter campaign.

Today we're checking in with the guys at 8-bitfootball.com to ask some questions on their project, Super Goal Run!

Operation Sports: First off, for the uninformed, what is Super Goal Run and why should people care?

Super Rock Games: Super Goal Run is a project which aims to make a game out of 8bit-football.com graphics.

For those who don't know, 8bit-football is a blog which illustrates football players and moments with the limitations of pixel art, without losing the character of the players. For some time, people have been asking when they would see these players in an actual game.

We want to have people's input when making the game. We want to see who are the most familiar players to them and also what type of tricks and moves they would like to see them do.

They also have the possibility to be in the game themselves. Our kickstarter rewards offer people a chance to have an 8bit version of themselves taking part in the game, whether that be as a player, coach, press member, spectator or board room member.

I think that is a pretty cool thing for a game to offer when you think about it.

We made a choice to have a side scrolling game rather than a 11 against 11 so that we can focus on the individual moments that are often retreated by 8bit-football.com. With a side on view of the players and the match action we can get more detail into the tricks and the players reactions.

OS: What is the goal of the project, any release dates?

SRG: We have a 6 month development schedule and are looking to release in March 2014.

OS: What is the closest thing out there to Super Goal Run right now? How are you different?

SRG: Good question. I would say New Star Soccer has some similarities, from the player career mode, but we are more focused on action scenes. The main idea would be Super Mario meets FIFA, with a Sensible Soccer touch.

Games like FIFA or PES want to simulate a football match and are great in what they do. We want to bring fun in a different way, focusing on those moments that you see in the highlights rather than the whole match.

We also want to add small details that you don't often see in other games, such as a shirtless celebration (followed by a yellow card - FIFA rules, not ours), tricks that defy the laws of gravity and physics, dives, streakers...you know, things that you see on YouTube :)

OS: What would a typical game experience be like in Super Goal Run?

SRG: From an action perspective, you will be running, collecting points by beating defenders, until you reach a certain stage when you will get the chance to have a shot on goal. We want the game to have depth, so we are thinking of many ways you can beat or avoid defenders, be it a fancy dribble or a simple pass to a team mate.

Collecting points will allow you to unlock a 'Superstar player' and allow you play as him. What football fan hasn't pretended imitate a famous player while playing football with their friends. Maybe even tried to execute that player signature trick or move. Just like real life each of these superstar players will have their own specific skill or trick in the game.

From a career perspective, we want to include different leagues, home and away kits, statistics, transfers, in summary, all elements what would make the game interesting in the long term.

OS: What game modes will be offered?

SRG: So at the moment we are focusing mainly on a career mode, where you progress through seasons collecting awards and unlocking superstar player on your way to the top league and international stardom. We also plan to have friendly mode where you can just play a match in one of two modes, time trial or highest points.

OS: The next question is simple: What else should people know about Super Goal Run?

SRG: Super Goal Run will be made by people who love football! Whether that be talking about football, trying our best to play it or watching it. We also love games and are lucky enough to be able to make games for a living. We will pour all our passion for football into this game to make it one of the best football games out there.

OS: Finally, how can people get involved?

SRG: Of course, to make the game come true we need funding, that is why we started the Kickstarter. We do need the resources and it is good to see people happy with our proposal and willing to contribute. Apart from the funding, we do have an idea of how we want to build the game, but we also think that there are a lot of good ideas that we can incorporate out there, being shared on facebook or twitter. We want to hear what people have to say and, if it matches our vision of the game, we want to include them. We already have some initiatives as sharing daily images on twitter, to see how receptive people are to the different players that could be in the game.

We would like to thank the folks at Super Rock Games and 8-bitfootball.com for taking time to answer our questions!
