Sony is making a huge mistake not putting Gran Turismo 6 on next-gen consoles right away.
FICTION: Install base: That is a big reason why Sony is releasing GT 6 on the PS3 and not the PS4. Once it releases on December 6, there will obviously be more PlayStation 3's in the wild than PlayStation 4's. Of course, Drive Club is another reason. Sony wants to build a new racing IP that can release in-between each Gran Turismo release. They tried that this generation with MotorStorm (yes, it is a different kind of racing game) and, despite that franchise having several releases, it never got remotely close to GT sales. Gran Turismo will have a PS4 release, no doubt about that, it just won't be until the GT 7.
The best console sports game on the next-gen consoles will be Forza Motorsport 5.
FACT: Madden will probably be good, but not great. We have no clue how NBA Live will be, and although NBA 2K14 should be fine, we have yet to see anything about that next gen version. Drive Club looks fun but doesn't scream "next gen" to me. The only game that I personally think can compete with Forza on next gen consoles will be FIFA 14. FIFA will have a new next gen engine called "IGNITE," but I think Forza edges it out because it is being developed soley for a next generation console.
There are no longer any unique experiences racing games can offer, only rehashes of what's already been done.
FICTION: This one is tough because I can't really predict the future or the next big feature in a racing game. A few years back I never would have guessed how successful and fun Autolog would be. So I think, yes, we will definitely see innovation in the genre. Developers and publishers will always find new experiences for players, it's just a matter of execution.
The best way to play racing games is with a steering wheel accessory of some kind.
FICTION: As a person who prefers a game pad over a wheel, I can't agree with the above statement. But honestly, it depends on the type of game. F1 and Forza simply play better with a wheel. Games like Need for Speed, and basically any arcade racing game, are better with a controller because precision is not as fundamental to the core gameplay. With that said, I know some people who prefer a racing wheel in all games. It's just a matter of personal preference; and I prefer to not use one.
