The MLB trade deadline has come and gone, with some notable players switching teams. Sportswriters and armchair GMs across the internet have voiced their opinion on the trades, often with no clear consensus.
For fun, the following players have been run through Out of the Park 13's “Shop Player” feature, to see what the game’s AI GM's would have given up in exchange for these traded players.
To be clear, this pseudo-simulation is using OOTP’s base roster set, and was executed at the trading deadline of a simmed season. Yes, not having the same standings or statistics eliminates a lot of the context of these trades, but hoping/waiting for completely mirrored results isn’t practical. Also, the shop around feature doesn’t group packages; the players mentioned would individually seal the deal for the computer AI.
OOTP Baseball is a text-simulation which allows you to get into the numbers and management of baseball. We gave it a 9.5 out of 10 in our review of OOTP 13. It annually gets above a 9.0 here at OS.
Wandy Rodriguez, HOU:
Real MLB: Dealt to Pirates for three prospects: Rudy Owens, Robbie Grossman, and Colton Cain
Best OOTP offer: White Sox AAA pitcher Simon Castro
Hanley Ramirez, MIA:
Real MLB: Dealt with Randy Choate to Dodgers for pitchers Nathan Eovaldi and Scott McGough
Best OOTP offer: I guess the Phillies decided not to extend Cole Hamels, as he was the premier return for Ramirez. Interestingly, Chase Utley was also offered.
Zach Grienke, MIL:
Real MLB: Traded to the Angels for infield prospect Jean Segura and Double-A pitchers Ariel Pena and John Hellweg.
Best OOTP offer: Surprisingly, no one wanted Grienke in a one-for-one trade.
Brandon League, SEA
Real MLB: Dealt to Dodgers for prospects Leon Landry and Logan Bawcom.
Best OOTP offer: While a lot of young (and fictional) players were offered, so were a lot of old relievers. The best player offered, in my opinion, is Mets' CF prospect Jaun Lagrares.
Shane Victorino, PHI
Real MLB: Dealt to Dodgers for for starting pitching prospect Ethan Martin and reliever Josh Lindblom.
Best OOTP offer: No takers. I guess, like Grienke, no one was willing to part with prospects (or even old relievers) to rent Victorino.
Hunter Pence, PHI
Real MLB: Sent to the Giants for right fielder Nate Schierholtz, minor league reliever Seth Rosin and minor league catcher Tommy Joseph
Best OOTP offer: Pence got a lot of hits, but not many made much sense for the Phillies. In real life, this was a cost cutting move; many of the offers were high priced veterans (Dan Uggla, Jayson Werth, etc.). Perhaps the best offer, based on the Phil’s needs, is Cardinals 3B Allan Craig.
Ryan Dempster, CHI
Real MLB: Traded to the Rangers (finally) for minor league third baseman Christian Villanueva and minor league pitcher Kyle Hendricks
OOTP best offer: Only one offer: Mets’ surging knuckle-baller R.A. Dickey. To be fair to OOTP, Dickey wasn’t having nearly the season he’s having in real life.
Have you traded any of these players in your franchises, either in OOTP or another game? Who'd you get?
