The track editor for Trials Evolution seemed like it would be totally bananas before the game hit digital shelves, and a week after release that promise has been fulfilled. There has been a steady stream of content for the standard trials courses as well as the supercross multiplayer tracks and wacky skill games. The developers at RedLynx have put out a good deal of entertaining content already, but the community has also stepped up in a big way. Below is a list of some of the best I've seen so far, in no particular order.
1) “End of Days ep#1”
Track Type: Trials
Difficulty: Easy
A truly entertaining Trials course. This one features absolute chaos on the screen. Oncoming cars, assaulting UFOs and crazy explosions litter the course, and you'll have to make a few death-defying jumps while your vision is obscured.
2) “AMA SUPERCROSS 4P”
Track Type: Supercross
Difficulty: Easy
While this isn't a very long supercross track, it's certainly well-designed. It features some good variance in the jumps, some quick automated turns and a great sense of speed. Definitely a must-download for people looking for a fun supercross track to add to your four-player rotation.
3) “Insane SuperX”
Track Type: Supercross
Difficulty: Medium
There's a lot of inspired design elements in this supercross track, with a great sense of verticality and some perilous drops. The level also features a few gravity-defying tubes and chutes, reminding me more of F-Zero than classic Trials.
4) “Golf”
Track Type: Sill Game
Difficulty: Hard
This one is simple in concept but very difficult to actually execute. You basically roll your bike up to a giant pinball flipper, hit the bailout button and then watch your biker fly. The goal is to hit a “golf green” that is (seemingly) several miles away, but the angle of your launch will dictate success. Definitely a fun time-waster.
5) “Silhouette Redux”
Track Type: Trials
Difficulty: Hard
This Trials track is both difficult and fun to look at, as every obstacle is obscured by the presentation of the level — but in kind of a good way. The level seems right out of LittleBigPlanet or something to that effect, where a cloth is in front of the whole level and only your rider's silhouette is visible. Several “blind” jumps and steep climbs make this one a challenge.
6) “Laguna Presa”
Track Type: Trials
Difficulty: Hard
A fun nighttime track, this one will definitely tax your Trials short game. There are plenty of moments with short approaches leading up to large inclines and several instances where you will have to wheelie the bike over a short obstacle and then react to another challenge right after.
7) “HIGHWAY 2 ADVENTURE”
Track Type: Trials
Difficulty: Medium
While some of the design in this one is a bit scattershot, it still is a vibrant and entertaining trials level. The presentation elements and “themes” throughout the ride are memorable, and a few jumps will require you to adjust your bike when you might not expect to.
8) “Rhythm MX 2lap 4p”
Track Type: Supercross
Difficulty: Medium
This moderately challenging supercross tracks lets you complete a couple of laps on the track, and that's good because of several spots that are likely to trip up riders. Some neat variance in the jumps and great camera movement make this one worth your time.
9) “End of the World”
Track Type: Trials
Difficulty: Medium
There is some solid cinematic presentation in this one, as you've got to jockey your bike through exploding buildings, overturned cars and unstable platforms. Some of the obstacles and jumps are done with obscured perspectives, requiring you to make subtle adjustments to stick a landing.
10) “2D Shooter”
Track Type: Skill Game
Difficulty: Medium
This RedLynx-developed skill game resembles a pretty standard top-down shoot-'em-up, complete with life bars, turrets, bosses, lasers and tanks. It presents a fun little challenge, but it's also just more crazy that the developers were able to make something so radically different than dirt-bike racing in their level editor (then again, they've already done foosball, basketball, FPS games and Angry Birds, too!).
Outlook
There have been some great tracks and skill games already released through the level editor, and I hope people keep iterating and getting wilder with their ideas. It would be fun to see skill games that have a little more depth to them, and it would also be awesome to see more trials tracks that feature even more creative design elements to match up with the crazy presentation. Still, I have to applaud all of the people taking the time to tinker and rework these cool levels. Trials Evolution is packed with content, but these downloadable levels make the proposition of loading up the game irresistible.
