SSX Mt. Eddie and Classic Characters DLC Review

DLC add-ons haven't exactly been must buys in our genre for the most part.

When I first heard about the SSX Mt. Eddie and Classic Characters DLC Pack, I was skeptical with that history in mind.

While I gave SSX extremely high marks in my review, I must admit that this DLC pack seems more like a money grab more-so than an outright useable expansion on the surface.

Mt. Eddie is a cool map, with nine total drops available over what amounts to be gradually longer versions of the same drop. There is no survive it mode included with Mt. Eddie, which in and of itself is quite disappointing.

The longest map measures in at over 7,000 meters, which means it will take quite awhile to actually finish your drop from the very top. The bronze medal score on Trick It comes in at 41 million, which means you'll have plenty of time to rack up huge scores.

The track itself is an over the top trick-fest, complete with ridiculous rails to grind on, crazy jumps, and plenty of slopes and huge drops to inspire the trickster imagination within all of us.

The classic characters are a nice touch, as you get several new personalities to play with, all with different attributes. While longtime fans of the series will undoubtedly enjoy these old faces, newcomers to the series probably won't care much.

It seems as if that's the story of this DLC pack. Old fans of the classic SSX games will undoubtedly like the old school touches of Mt. Eddie with the old faces of the classic characters.

Simply put, if you are an old fan of the series -- you just might find enough value for your $8 purchase to justify the Mt. Eddie and Classic Characters expansion pack. If you are a newcomer the old faces won't carry as much weight and the new mountain isn't simply enough to justify a huge expense.

Recommendation: Possible buy for old fans of SSX, avoid or wait for a price drop.

This DLC is great. First off, EA could have easily launched this at their "normal" $10 DLC price point. The hardcore would have still snapped it up, but at $8 it makes it a little easier sell for everyone else.

While I agree with you that this is targeted at "old fans", I don't agree that this is a "possible buy". This DLC has just about everything the old fans have been asking for - it's a MUST HAVE, and I don't think I've seen any complaints about it from the hardcore SSX'ers at MerquryCity.com (other than "where's Allegra?").

The fans wanted longer SSX3 style tracks - we got it - The Big Wachowski is the biggest drop in the game (it's no 30 minute top to bottom SSX3 run, but...).
The fans wanted old characters/outfits - we got six of them.
The fans wanted less authentic/realistic and more SSX Tricky style tracks - we got it and even fireworks!
The fans wanted halfpipe and Big Air competitions back - we sorta got halfpipes (they are in Mt. Eddie, but there are not any halfpipe gameplay competitions. But we did get a super-short "Big Air" style drop/competition.
They even threw in some classic SSX music to boot.

Dustin - are you still playing SSX? Come check the forums at Merqury City. There are even a couple of Devs hanging out, answering questions, getting people's opinions. The global events just got re-vamped, there are only 2 "active" mountain ranges a day - one for high rollers and one cheaper one. This was done to funnel players into fewer events with more people.
