NBA 2K12 Developer Insight #3 - Art Direction

Lynell Jinks here, Art Director for NBA 2K12. Today I am going to be talking about both new improvements that you can look forward to in 2K12.

The artists here have taken a lot of time to make our game feel even more life-like than ever before.  We took a lot of time to research and find references for all of the greatest players in every era, along with the old school feel that each of their eras is known for. We really worked hard to recreate more than a 150 new retired players with their accessories, hair,  uniforms, court floors, etc. because, as Erick said in the NBA Greatest Insight, we are often going at least ten players deep on the 34 new legendary teams.

This year, the broadcast of each game is so life-like that you will have a hard time believing you’re not watching old clips from back in the day. The amount of detail we put into making these games fit into their respective era’s is crazy, from the old school baskets, press tables, overlays, camera angles, etc. We also did a lot of work on post process filters; adding sepia and grayscale to display older games, the way they were broadcasted in their day. As you can see in the below screenshot, a game from the 60s or 70s will have that “grainy” look and feel. The combination of camera work and color adds to the authenticity of each broadcast and is specific to each era, venue, etc.

One of the most noticeable updates, we made this year, is capturing the likenesses for a lot of the key players.  We updated close to 400 player heads that I felt weren’t up to par or needed a new, fresher look. I honestly think this is one of the biggest places you’ll see a difference up close.

Every year we get a ton of feedback about tattoos or should I say lack of, so to help solve this problem we worked with NBA to provide us with hi-res shots of any player who has tattoos from every possible angle.  And while I can’t get into too much detail in an effort to not spoil future Insights, we have made advancements that should make the most hardcore fans on the 2K Insider blog, those breaking down the slightest intricacies in shoes, tattoos, or hair, quite happy.

Another cool aspect, unique to this year’s game, is crowd and collision animation. Mascots have been given more props such as a t-shirt gun they shoot into the crowd with fans actually fighting to get one. Watch closely, you may even see a Mascot race out on skates.

The first row animation of the crowd has been spiced up as well. There is more contact and more interaction. Watch out if a ball, or worse a player, comes hurdling in your direction.  I don’t want to go to deep as our Presentation folks have an Insight in the coming weeks, in which they will focus on all these subjects along with pre-game, post-game, atmosphere etc.

Thanks for reading. We’re feeling very proud of the steps that we’ve taken in Art and hope that you appreciate them. In the next couple days, we will be revealing a trailer from the one and only Momentus that bring a lot of what I discussed to life. It will blow your mind.

** TRAILER COMING SOON**

Annnnnnnnnnnd marketing fail. This seems like a doomed insight from the start. They should have never released this one before the Presentation one cause there's things included in it that will 'spoil' that blog. Going forward with the decision to do this one first, they should have never put a release date on it without having approval on the trailer to cause a delay in the first place and with what's included in this one they certainly shouldn't have delayed it to Tuesday and still not even have the trailer ready to go with it.

Anyway don't wanna be too hard on them over this cause they don't have to do insights at all, just....bad execution here on this one.

Ok im usually the "chill out guy"

but wtf, lol

ill live, but 2k needs to step their "not delay a insight because you want to release it with a trailer, then release the insight without the trailer" game up

Well at least Rob does the play call on Friday. He always deliver.

I see why they wanted to wait for the trailer before releasing the insight because it was dry to say the least smh. Hopefully the trailer is worth the wait but from viewing Momentus previous trailers it definitely won't disappoint like this insight

This is an art insight. I would've expected addressing the lingering home and away accessories colors questions we have pretty much every year that never gets addressed. They talked about very, very, very briefly the jerseys, court floors and player accessories that they worked hard to recreate. Well how about elaborating a bit on what they changed that was wrong in last years game. Did you fix the court for Chicago Stadium? How about early 90's Benny the Bull? What can we look forward to in the way of jerseys and alternates and the like? All we heard is stuff we've already known about really and a precise number on the faces done. We knew guys were getting new faces, cool now we know there are exactly 400. We knew about the old timey black and white presentation the old school overlays and whatnot. We don't wanna spoil things for future insights but over half of this insight will be on stuff already spoiled for you by the numerous magazine scans and online previews of the game that have come out thus far. Good thinking.

This one was definitely a disappointment, especially considering the delay.

People were upset because the insight was postponed last week. They get the insight early and they are upset again because not enough details were released. Again I ask: Is there something special about the Art Insight that you expected? Are people expecting big changes? If 2k is making big changes, they're doing a good job at keeping it under wraps.

What is your source for this info? Not saying you're wrong or anything just curious where you saw/heard that.

Wasn't expecting that much, but it would have been nice if it gave us some insight into something new besides there's new stuff but we don't want to spoil it. What I expect from an insight is insight.

I got to admit that for the genre and the consoles standards, those faces looked amazing !

Ummm how do you get something that's about four days late early? That's like instead of 2K12 coming out October 4th they say the title will be delayed until the following week and then when it drops that next Monday saying guys shouldn't be upset because the game dropped early.

I wasnt expecting much from the Insight, the Art Insight from last year was nothing to write home about if I remember correctly..

I just figured they would release a trailer, since it "wouldnt make sense w/o it" per Ronnie...

meh, im over it....not a big deal...funny though

It's for a couple reasons. Namely, giving a certain date for a particular Insight to be released, then postponing that Insight because you want to release it with a trailer. To some, the Art Insight should have included anything detailing changes to jerseys, arenas, floors, player models, tattoos, possibly shoes/accessories, mascots, etc.
So since the Insight didn't give 20% of the information expected of an "Art Insight", with the addition of the delayed/implied trailer being excluded, when the main reason for the Insight being delayed WAS the trailer not being ready, it's a bit disappointing.

I'm sure it's not gonna stop any of us from buying it, but I think I speak for more than a few when I say it's a bit annoying.

Welcome to the 2K Marketing Experience! Just sit back, relax, and definitely try not to make sense of anything they do, or else you might start to get feelings of nausea and anger.

Loving the Fly Wade's.

Wade looks even more Wadey now.

Metta World Peace still needs a better face.
