OS E3 Coverage Wrap Up Roundtable

Which Sports Game 'won' the show for you?

Christian McLeod: Madden 12 ran away with my sports game of the show honors based mainly on how big of a leap it is from last year's game. The art style and presentation of the game makes you feel like you are immersed in an NFL broadcast, and the gameplay just feels spot on. I said in my preview that this is going to be a huge year for Madden, and it's nice to finally see the series on the right track.

TD St. Matthew-Daniel:
Hands down FIFA 12. In the short time I got to spend with the game, it's clear this game can be this year's NBA 2K11. Any time you can vastly improve control in a sport where ball control is optimal, then there's real potential for greatness at the foundation of the game. EA Sports Football Club also sounds like a feature that could increase the longevity of this year's game much more.

Chase Becotte: I want to say MLB Bobblehead Pros to be edgy, but I will go with WWE '12 instead. I just kept sneaking back to this game at E3 to make more peasants tap out with Alberto Del Rio. Coming off a strong effort with WWE All-Stars and the fact that I was so unimpressed with Smackdown vs. Raw 2011 certainly clouds my judgment a bit, but this game still is making all the right moves this year. From the gameplay to the visuals to the steps taken to make the game look more like a TV broadcast, WWE '12 is finally accepting that it is a sports game and a wrestling game -- not a fighting game.

What do you mean I got something to prove?!

Which game came out of the show with the most to prove going forward?

Christian McLeod: This may not be fair based on the fact that we were only shown an 8-minute video, but UFC Undisputed 3 was just "blah" to me. As a seasoned vet of the series, I just wasn't seeing any of the gameplay improvements in the video, and I was hard pressed to notice any visual improvements as well. The new submission system is flat out silly looking, and I'm hoping the addition of Pride to the game is not the only big addition.

TD St. Matthew-Daniel: As I noted in my PES 2012 impressions, Konami seems to be focused this year on pleasing their core fan base more so than competing with FIFA 12. For a franchise that has fallen behind these past few years -- mainly because they haven't been able to keep up with FIFA's features, licenses and presentation -- will the "for our fans" strategy come back to haunt them? We will see...

Chase Becotte: I would probably put Need for Speed: The Run here. I just don't see the reason for multiple Need for Speed games each year, especially when the main "new" draw to this game is repetitive on-foot quick-time events. I guess some people want a new NFS: Undercover(?), but a scripted and seemingly linear game does not seem to mix well with the Autolog functionality. SSX is also probably in the vicinity. I like what I saw of the game, but there's plenty left to see, and the controls are not even completely functional yet, so it's hard to gauge what the final gameplay will even feel like.

The general consensus: It's a lot better than Smackdown vs. Raw 2011.

Finally (and quickly) give us which games you are more or less excited about after the show?

Christian McLeod:
WWE 12 was an absolute blast to play even at this early stage of development. The new control system is easy to pick up, and I'm excited to possibly spend a good deal of time with a "sim" wrestling game for the first time since No Mercy. MLB Bobblehead Pros also has me pretty excited. This downloadable title looks to get some major playtime later this summer when it releases due to its addictive and polished gameplay. Finally I am geeked for EA's releases. NCAA 12, NHL 12 and FIFA 12 are all the real deal this year -- get ready for a very expensive year if you are a sports gamer, it will be well worth it.

TD St. Matthew-Daniel: I'm beginning to get a bit skeptical about Madden 12. I'll still likely play the heck out of it since I live for online leagues, which Madden offers the best of, but I fear that the main gameplay issues still remain. I got enough time with the E3 build to notice sliding and dodgy offensive line play still rear their ugly heads on the field. However, the new collision system does feel and look great, plus there's still Online Franchise mode and feature news we are yet to get details on. So I'm still holding out some hope that Madden 12 will be at least very good, but I won't be caught off guard if it's more of the same game with a new skin.

Chase Becotte: Just seeing a glimpse of what NBA 2K12 is doing on the court got me excited. There's clearly some major tweaks that have been made to dribbling/fast breaks and the way players use their momentum to go into every shot. Plus, while the developers need to give Dirk his longer hair, Dirk actually looked and was shooting more like the real Dirk, which is a big deal because white guys always get the shaft in 2K (except if your name is Luke Ridnour). I also think if FIFA 12 and NHL 12 are going to make major strides forward if the physics upgrades are properly balanced over the next couple months. In general, I just think it's amazing that I came out of this show not really down on many games. It's the first E3 I have been to where I can remember feeling hopeful about the future of the sports genre as a whole.

Hmmmmmmm, no mention of Forza 4. I don't know if that's due to its release being way off in the distance, or if there just wasn't enough time to get a solid impression. I'm hoping it's B.

I'm also interested to see how sports games work on the Vita, particularly with the new second stick. Perhaps players could use the back touch pad to shift gears up and down in racing games, or use the front pad to call hot routes in Madden.

You are correct with option B. We really couldn't get any hands on time with Forza 4 due to lines lasting multiple hours to play. Game looks gorgeous, we just weren't able to play it.
