Living in the Past with NBA 2K11

Living in the past is undoubtedly something we all do.

At some point in our lives we are told not to. At another point, we’re told to reminisce. How are we, as human beings, to understand which path to take? The answer has finally arrived.

It was a long wait before the fateful day of October 5 finally arrived. To some, it was another terrible Tuesday, arguably the worst work day in the week. To others, it was just a blur. But to us gamers, it is a day that has already reached the status of infamy. October 5 was the day NBA 2K11 hit store shelves and finally gave us our answer.

Live in the past.

With Michael Jordan gracing the cover of the newly released NBA 2K game, the past has become the present. Not only are there a handful of classic Chicago teams, but you can also get your hands on epic duos like Starks and Ewing, Stockton and Malone, and Payton and Kemp.

We all know about the Jordan Challenge and how challenging it actually is, but these classic teams go much further than the 10 challenges.

On the forums I see people asking everyday if they can take these teams into Association mode. The simple answer is, yes you can. But I took it a step further when bringing in my classic team.

If you read my articles and blogs on a somewhat consistent basis, you will know I am an avid Seattle Sonics fan that cannot accept the fact that they are no more. So I decided to take the old-school Sonics and replace the Oklahoma City Thunder.

I was six games into my season with Payton and Kemp averaging 19 and 26 points per game, respectively, but something was not right. It felt like too much of a fantasy seeing Kemp completely dominate Boozer in the season opener. So I decided to fiddle around in the menus, and to my surprise and pleasure, I discovered the one thing that has made this game the GOAT.

I was able to swap the Thunder’s roster with Seattle’s. Now I have my Association with the Sonics, but Payton is not the star. It’s Durant. The way it should be.

You're wearing the WRONG jersey!

Now I am already 12 games in, rocking a 10-2 record while KD is averaging 34 points per game. The roster is near perfect, I just needed a backup forward for Durant. I know Green can handle the SF position, but I needed someone else, someone with a defensive mindset. Using the rather amazing player finder, I found the perfect fit for what I needed.

Renaldo Balkman.

Now I can fully enjoy my time with NBA 2K11. Hearing the announcers say the name "Seattle Sonics" brings back a lifetime full of memories. Memories that I don’t want to forget anytime soon.

So I salute you 2K, for finally giving me the answer that I have been searching for, the answer that allows me to relive my past and fulfill my virtual gaming dream.

Welcome home, Sonics.

Great post. A team I just rebuilt (but with no intention of bringing them into Association) is the 2000-01 Lakers. It's great to see the fantasy matchup agains the 96 Bulls.

Nice read, i too am loving this aspect of the game. I may never play as a 2011 team in season mode the whole year with this game. I can understand how in your situation it provides a whole different level of satisfaction. Kemp was a beast in his best years. I love the fact they didnt just stick the faces and ratinngs on the players. so many of them move, run, pass, etc just as they did. as someone who thought the Jordan era produced some of the best basketball ive ever wittnessed (not just from MJ but from cats trying to take his crown) im loving this game that much more.

It'd be much cooler if we could play with these classic teams ONLINE. Never understood why 2K didn't add this feature. It doesn't have to be for ranked games. But Unranked games against buddies would have been awesome.

Figured someone would resurrect the Sonics.

Enjoy!

My homeboy put it best when he said "playing the classic teams on NBA 2K11 just feels like Magic, Bird, Kemp and all those guys are still here."

2K was genius with this. Beyond fun. I'm just hoping for more of 'em next year.

Wait how do you play with classic teams on association besides trading them!?

What does it mean when a player has "G" show up under their feet?

They're tired. Time for some substitutions.

I Wish I Could Run A "90's' Season/Association.Where I Can Have All Nba Teams From That Era....Or Better Yet Why Did 2k Take All The Legends Out From 2k10 ect. Give Them Back (50's-90's Allstar Teams)So There For I May Build My Own Teams Together.I Myself Love The Old Teams And Areans. Also Why Is Bulls Vs Sun Not In The Jordan Challenge.WHERE IS BARKLEY!!!
Please Get A Patch Including Old Allstar Teams And Charles Barkley...
We Could Never Have Our Cake n Eat It Two...

I'm torn over what old team to use. I'm mixing in a few current players vWith the Lakers, I just need to build a bench. With the Knicks, I may add TMac at sf & use Mason off the bench. With the Hawks my big addition was Michael Redd. By putting the old players on current teams I have access to all the jerseys new & old. Great game though.

Coolest find ever! As a Seattle-area native, I really wanted to use the Zombie Sonics this year, but couldn't bring myself to look at those awful uniforms for 82 games. Now, I can have Durant get the MVP with the Sonics instead!

For those wondering how he did it, at the main screen, go to Manage Roster then Rosters. Go to the Zombie Sonics and click on a player, there will be multiple options, including Assign. You can just move players around that way. I was wondering how he did this as I don't mess with rosters, so it took me a bit to figure it out. Save your roster, then begin Association.

Once the patch drops, the Sonics will be part of the league again!

I tried this, but I put as many classic teams as I could, while still keeping the dominating teams in the game, but it was too hard keeping up with all the Bulls teams. Haha. But I love the idea you used to put the Sonics with the Thunder's roster in association. Even though imma Celtics fan, I was mad when you guys gpt robbed.

I bought this game because it has the 94-95 Knicks. (I'm french, mind you)

I was devastated when I discovered I couldn't use them online.

I did the same thing swapping the Thunder roster for the Sonics. But I kept Gary Payton (replaced Russell Westbrook) and Shawn Kemp (replaced Jeff Greene) and teamed them up with KD and the rest of the current Thunder roster. This combination is almost unstoppable!

Classic teams were a nice touch, just wish they had full rosters. Maybe in 2k12.

Hit up 2K Share. There's some good files on there that have the benches filled out for the classic teams (PortlandBlazer's file on here is really solid).

I want to use the 91 Lakers in Association Mode. Do I have to swap them with the current Lakers or can I take out, say, the Clippers and put the 91 Lakers in their place?

I don't blame you Sonics fans one-bit for making that move. Such a travesty that Seattle lost its team. I like the Thunder a lot and OKC is a good home for an NBA franchise, but the Seattle fans deserved a lot better.

I believe you can swap any team for any other.
