On June 26, 2003, the basketball world ushered in what many believe was the best draft class the NBA has ever seen. Seven years later, three of the top players from the '03 draft class -- LeBron, Wade and Bosh -- have us anticipating another big summer that could change the outlook of the Association.
So through the glasses of the main teams that are looking to make a killing in the free-agency market this summer, let us take a look at how the 2010 NBA free-agent market could change NBA 2K11.
New York Knicks
Starting off at the Mecca, a lot of the 2010 hype has been created by the Knicks and their relentless pursuit of LeBron James. With barely a handful of players under contract for next season and the New-York faithful behind them, the Knicks are exactly where they planned to be at this point. The only thing that can hold them back is their lack of talent and winning records during these past few seasons.
However, they do have one of the best shooters in the game in Danilo Galliarni and a seemingly rejuvenated Tracy McGrady, who says he would re-sign for chump change if the Knicks lure some of the top free agents. Even if the Knicks do not get their main target, they could still field a lineup that consists of Galo, T-Mac, Ray Allen and Amar'e Stoudemire.
This lineup makes some sense because STAT is already accustomed to Coach D’Antoni’s style from their Phoenix days. In addition, Ray Allen, at this stage of his career, would love the "seven seconds or less" offense. Plus, signing only one max-contract player in Amar'e leaves the Knicks with enough cap space to bring back David Lee. Star power, shooters and rebounds is an NBA 2K gamer’s dream.
No LeBron, but the Knicks can still be somewhat relevant again.
Chicago Bulls
They already have a budding young star in Derrick Rose, but the Bulls know that to achieve greatness, they must get another big name to come play in the house that was once owned by the greatest. Dealing away John Salmons just before the trade deadline put them in a great position to do just that.
Even though every team would love LeBron, many believe that the Bulls top priority is hometown hero Dwyane Wade. Wade is one of the top free agents that I truly believe has a chance of playing elsewhere next season. The Heat have not done much yet to assure him of their intent to win, and the city of Chicago has enough basketball prestige to make him switch zip codes.
With that being said, from a basketball standpoint, I do not see the Bulls making a championship leap with Wade on the team. Yes, it would be great to pull off isomotion moves with a backcourt duo of Wade and Rose, but both players need the ball to be effective and neither is a great spot-up shooter. In addition, the there are not enough shooters on the Bulls roster to spread the floor. Therefore, the lack of shooting could be your downfall if you play NBA 2K11 on the higher difficulty settings or in a sim-league environment where you cannot just drive all day.
Wade in Chicago takes the rock out of Rose's hands.
Los Angeles Clippers
This is the team no one is really talking about. But when you are the team that resides in the shadow of the Lakers, have a history of unfortunate first-round draft picks, and years of bad luck that indicate some sort of curse, why should the Clippers be in the free-agent discussion? Here is why: the city of Los Angeles and a nice crop of young talent.
The Clippers still have Blake Griffin, Chris Kaman, Eric Gordon and Baron Davis. As you see, the only hole in their starting five is at small forward, and that just happens to be the natural position of -- yup, you guessed it -- LeBron Raymone James. If LeBron does turn his back on Cleveland and chooses to turn it into Shantytown USA, I cannot think of a better city or team that is a better fit for the King.
With Baron Davis on his side, never again would we have to watch that stale 5-on-1 offense or worry about LeBron getting double-teamed all game online. LeBron would finish plays rather than start them, and he has enough shooters around him in Gordon and Rasual Butler to still create off the dribble. Also, a forward tandem of LeBron and Blake Griffin would be the most athletic the league has ever seen.
If this happens, come NBA 2K11 you better choose this team and throw alley-oops all day -- just hope you do not sustain a thumb injury that puts you out for the rest of the season. Hey, it is the Clippers after all.
New city. New number. Old rivalry for LBJ.
Miami Heat
The Heat’s main goal this offseason is keeping their own prized free agent in Dwyane Wade. But as I stated earlier, there is a possibility that Wade might bolt Miami. However, failure to keep Wade does not spell doom for the franchise since the team would have enough space for two max-contract free agents.
A lineup of Chris Bosh, Joe Johnson and Michael Beasley would be very possible in such a scenario. From a basketball point of view, a big-bodied playmaker like JJ, the pure-scoring ability of Beasley and a dominant big man like Bosh is a great plan B. Pat Riley would get a contending team right away, there would be another potent offensive team for NBA 2K11 fans to use, and the new guys would get to party in South Beach. See, everybody wins.
A new Big Three in South Beach.
New Jersey Nets
Like the Knicks, the Nets also have their eyes on LeBron James. Although it seems unlikely that such a terrible team would have a shot at any of the top free agents this summer, the Nets have a few assets no other team has. For starters, they have the best young talent of any of the teams trying to land big-name free agents. Yes, the team might be playing like crap, but they have stud center Brook Lopez, Devin Harris, Yi Jianlian and Courtney Lee.
In addition, while the Nets may not be as high profile as the Knicks, their move to Brooklyn is finally picking up steam, and it never hurts to have Jay-Z as a part owner of the franchise. Lastly, the Nets also have the best shot at drafting one of the most-anticipated rookies since LeBron in Kentucky’s John Wall. Add all those factors together and the Nets are a very attractive option for free agents.
Even if the top guys in this free-agency class stay away, add Rudy Gay and John Wall to the currents Nets roster, and you have a team that would be coveted by a lot of NBA 2K11 gamers. Their inexperience might hurt them in real life, but all that talent would do a lot of damage in the virtual world.
Insert John Wall and the Nets could be the team to beat -- in NBA 2K11.
So where do you want to see the top free agents when NBA 2K11 arrives?
