Key Matchups for Divisional Weekend – Houston Texans at New England Patriots
Posted on January 12, 2013 at 08:45 PM.
- NE – QB Tom Brady Vs. HOU – QB Matt Schaub - The 12 year pro, hall of fame bound Brady is trying to pass Joe Montana for all time playoff wins this Sunday. In week 14 at home the Pats handed the Texans their third loss of the year, 42 – 14. Brady had help on early drives with Texans penalty’s, and made them pay going up 14-0 in the 1st quarter. Schaub had already thrown an INT, and the Texans would finish the half down 21 – 0. A similar start will lead to the same results, Schaub has to answer if his defense lets Brady score early.
- HOU – RB Arian Foster Vs. NE – Front 7 - New England’s defense is 9th in rushing yards allowed in 2012, with 1630 yards and 10 TD’s. At home New England’s opponents average 110 yards on the ground. In the week 14 loss Arian Foster carried the ball 15 times for 45 yards and 1 TD. Last week at home against Cincinnati was a workhorse with 32 carries, 140 yards, and 1 TD.
- NE – DT Vince Wilfork Vs. RG Ben Jones - In week 14, Wilfork had one of his best games of the year with 1 sack and 1 forced fumble. He was disruptive in all aspects of the game. The Texans RG, Jones has to keep Wilfork at bay early if his offense wants any chance to have consistency.
- HOU – Safeties Vs. NE – Tight Ends - The Texans safeties Glover Quinn Jr, and Daniel Manning really struggled against play action in week 14, and this was a Gronkowski-less Patriots team. Aaron Hernandez was Brady’s favorite target hauling in 8 catches for 58 yards and 2 TD’s. The New England duo has puzzles defenses for a few years now.
- NE – Offensive Tackles Vs. HOU – DE J.J. Watt - The defensive player of the year candidate had another awesome game last week against the Bengals. Tallying 6 QB pressures, 2 batted passes, and 4 run stops. New England’s offensive tackles, LT Nate Solder, and RT Sebastian Vollmer did as good a job as you will see against Watt in week 14. You cannot completely stop J.J. Watt, but not allowing him to have a big game will go a long way.
