Key Matchups for Wildcard Weekend – Indianapolis Colts at Baltimore Ravens
Posted on January 5, 2013 at 03:06 PM.

  1. (IND) RB -Vick Ballard Vs. (BAL) Front 7 - In order for the Colts to have a consistent offensive attack they are going to need the 5th round rookie Ballard getting some chunk yardage against Baltimore’s 20th worst rushing defense. The Ravens at home are allowing 109 yards on average, but in the past 2 weeks at have only allowed 114 yards combined. Indianapolis lost 5 games this year, and Ballard didn’t score in any of them, but has 3 TD’s in the 11 wins.
  2. (BAL) LT – Michael Oher Vs. (IND) RE – Dwight Freeney - In the past 3 games for the Colts, Freeney has 1 sack in each, and in 2 career games against Baltimore has 4 sacks. In order to keep it at 4, Oher has to keep pace with the all-pro and not fall victim to Freeney’s spin move. Michael is a very good LT so this match-up will be fun to watch.
  3. (IND) WR – Reggie Wayne Vs. (BAL) DB – Cary Williams - This match-up is big for both teams, Wayne finished the regular season with 106 catches, 1,355 yards, and 5 TD’s. In 2 playoff games against the Ravens in 07′ and 09′ he has 13 catches, 114 yards, and 1 TD. For Cary Williams, he replaced Baltimore’s #1 DB Ladarius Webb (INJ) early in the 2012 season, and he has 4 INT’s and 1 TD. Look for Baltimore giving Williams help with a safety over the top.
  4. (BAL) TE Dennis Pitta Vs. (IND) LB – Jerrell Freeman - For Baltimore, Pitta has become a real threat in the passing game, catching 61 balls, for 669 yards and 7 TD’s in 2012. Flacco loves looking for Pitta as his 2nd or 3rd read. On the other side is Freeman a 26 year old, who has played most in the CFL, and in his 1st NFL season had a team high 145 total tackles. In week 1 vs. Chicago, Freeman took a Jay Cutler pass the other way for 6. He has sideline to sideline speed, and good coverage skills for a 6’0 LB.
  5. (IND) QB – Andrew Luck Vs. (BAL) QB – Joe Flacco - Who would have thought that Luck & the Colts would be in the Playoffs? He did. This is where we thought they would be too, just not in Luck’s rookie campaign. On the road, he has 11 TD’s and 13 INT’s. (Ray Lewis is returning as well.) On the other side is the 5th year QB Joe Flacco, who at home in 2012 was deadly passing for 2,363 yards 15 TD’s and 5 INT’s. If Flacco has a sub-par game in a loss, could the Ravens may start looking elsewhere for their QB??
