LAFAYETTE, La. (September 29, 2012)- Saturday was a record setting day for FIU with 3 individual school records falling and a record for consecutive points scored against an opponent. Did we mention that was just the first half? Yes, it was an easy victory for the FIU Golden Panthers as they won their fist conference game in convincing fashion. Star Quarterback Jake Medlock tossed a school record 5 TD passes in the first half with a record 4 of them going to receiver Jacob Younger, who would add a school record 257 yards receiving to his day as well. Wayne Times would be on the other end of Medlock's other passing TD.
FIU broke the game open early with 21 points in the first quarter alone, followed by 17 more in the second quarter to take a devastating 38-0 lead into halftime. UL Lafayette would get off the shutout with a late third quarter TD, but by then, the game was well in hand. The 35 point victory is the largest ever for FIU in it's opening conference game and one of it's largest victories ever. The offense may have been great, but the nations #1 run defense continued it's domination Saturday, holding the UL Lafayette run game to just 41 total yards. It was a dominating all around performance from the Golden Panthers.
"Today was amazing", said OC Phoenix Young. "The whole team played an almost perfect game. I'm so proud of Jake and Jacob for setting those school records today, they've worked so hard since I've been here and it's nice to see all the hard work paying off. This is the way you want to start off your conference season, just a great win."
Young was asked about comments made by UL Lafayette DC G. Stewart, who stated that he felt the FIU offense was trying to run up the score. "You know what, I don't really care, it's their job to stop us. I can't help it if my guys are just better than his. If he has a problem with me, he can call and talk to me. Using the media as your crutch is weak, come and step up to me like a man. That's all I will say on that subject."
FIU returns to Miami for it's second conference game of the season against Arkansas State.
