MIAMI (September 22, 2012)- FIU got its biggest win of the season thus far when it knocked off defending Big East Co-Champion Louisville Saturday in front of the home crowd. Louisville, led by star Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, had high hopes this season of competing for a BCS berth, but those dreams took a hit with the loss on Saturday. Bridgewater struggled all day, unable to record a passing TD and completing only 39% of his passes. While the Golden Panther defense kept the powerful Louisville offense in check, the offense, led by Jake Medlock, was almost unstoppable for the second straight week.
Jake Medlock threw for a season high 358 yards with both of his passing TDs going to star receiver Wayne Times. Times finished the day with 10 catches for 167 yards in addition to the two scores. Kedrick Rhodes was solid on the ground once again, adding 92 yards on 25 carries and a rushing TD as well. FIU broke open the game in the second half after leading just 3-0 at halftime. Louisville would tie the game with a FG early in the third, but in what has become a staple so far this season, FIU rattled off 17 straight points to put the game away early in the fourth quarter.
"Jake was fantastic again today," said OC Phoenix Young. "He was throwing the ball with touch and swiftness, plus he was improving his reads and getting the ball where it needed to be, which was usually to Wayne. I'm just so proud of the guys, I don't think many experts, I'm look at you Kirk, gave us a chance in this game, but I think we showed how dangerous this team can be when we are clicking on all cylinders."
Young was asked about the beginning of the conference schedule and had this to say. "Obviously the conference season is the most important part of the year, it's where you make or break your season. Our opening game isn't easy by any stretch, I mean UL Lafayette already knocked off a ranked Oklahoma State team this year, so we need to be ready. All of our conference games will be a challenge, but I believe the guys will be ready and I'm confident in the team."
FIU opens it's conference schedule on the road next week against UL Lafayette.
