After a brief flirtation with the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles, Brian Kelly elected to return to the school which he previous led to an undefeated regular season, only stumbling in the last game of the season, a 42-14 thrashing by SEC heavyweight Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game.

The defense is in good hands with Bob Diaco - a rising star in the coaching business - whose 3-4 defense finished second in the nation in scoring defense.

The offense grew throughout the 2012 campaign as red-shirt freshman, Everett Golson grew into the offense, finishing the season strong with 286 passing yards and 2 total touchdowns against the revered Crimson Tide Defense.

Chuck Martin begins his second season as the Fighting Irish's Offensive Co-ordinator and looks to put a deadly, balanced spread offense on the field in the 2013-2014 season.

The Irish defense has not yet surrendered a touchdown this year and is ranked #1 in scoring defense nationally. E. Golson has managed a very balanced offensive attack despite several turnovers early on in the year. The Running attack has been led by Cierre Wood and Theo Riddick, each back has had a 200+ yard game this season.

The Irish Defense pitched a shutout as they blew out the #3 ranked team in the country in a statement game. The Wolverines had won the past three meetings with the Irish but they could not keep the streak alive thanks to a stout defense and powerful running game led by Cierre Wood who went for over 200 on the ground and was named player of the game.

#3 Michigan (3-0) @ #19 Notre Dame (3-0)
This rivalry game is back on the national stage after Michigan opened their season with their upset of the then ranked #1 Alabama Crimson Tide and Irish Upset the then ranked #9 Michigan State Spartans last week. Notre Dame has dropped three in a row to the Wolverines but are hoping their vastly improved defense can win the game for them given another shot at Denard Robinson. Robinson will be the best player on the field when he is under centre for the Wolverines Saturday, a true Heisman contender who is a threat to score anytime he touches the ball.

The Return of Cierre Wood to the Irish backfield could not have gone much better for Notre Dame. The Redshirt Junior had over 120 yards for 3 touchdowns as the Irish whipped the #9 ranked Spartans 38-6. Starting Saftey Jamoris Slaughter was lost for the season due to a Torn ACL so redshirt freshman Mathias Farley is the "next man in" in the words of Coach Kelly. The Irish Offense continued to show balance gaining 200 through the air and on the ground for the third consecutive Saturday while the defense was stifling as usual. Next week the Irish play the #3 ranked Michigan Wolverines (3-0) in a rivalry game at South Bend.

The #24 Irish enter Spartan Stadium to face the #9 ranked Spartans. Both teams enter tonights game with a record of 2-0. Only one of these teams will remain undefeated after tonights night game featuring two teams ranked in the top 25. Will the Fighting Irish retain possession of the Megaphone trophy?

Notre Dame's defense will get a tough test from All-Big 10 running back Le'von Bell but should put pressure on quarterback Andrew Maxwell. A first year starter for the Spartans. The Irish backfield gets a boost this week as Cierre Wood returns from a 2 game suspension. Kelly has penciled him in as the starter despite halfback Theo Riddick's monster game versus Purdue where he went for over 200 yards on the ground and 3 total touchdowns. LB Danny Spond returns from injury for the Irish and will start at the Dog Position. LB Dan Fox will move back to inside linebacker.

The Irish took the Midshipmen behind the woodshed in a 40-2 shellacking.
