Pre-Allstar break:
The team has rocketed off to a great start to the year, 41-13. The chemistry on the team is the best I have been around in my short time as a GM. Everyone knows and has accepted their role. Injuries have been kept to a minimum as well.
Irving made his 5th straight All-Star game. The third time as a starter. He is averaging 21.7ppg/3.8rpg/7apg, which are lows from last year. But he isn't being asked to do as much scoring with the addition of Waiters who is averaging 19ppg. Holden also made his 1st All-Star team as a reserve. Since being inserted into the starting lineup this year he is averaging 13.4ppg/8.1rpg/3.9apg and starting that real promise of a high 1st round pick.
There were some major extensions handed before the singing deadline. The Bulls extended Rose for 5yrs/112mil. The Thunder extended Westbrook for 5yrs/101mil. And the Warriors extended Curry for 5yrs/92mil.
I decided to pass on extending McCollum. He was looking for about 9-10mil/yr going forward. I didn't feel comfortable putting that much money into a 6th man. Albeit one that can play sg and pg. Money is going to become real tight once Parker and Holden reach the end of their rookie contracts. I didn't want to hamstring the team before that time came.
Post All-Star break:
The team continued their roll right through the regular season. We locked down a playoff spot by March 15th, and ended up the #1 seed with a 60-22 record overall. For the second year in row we led the league in ppg averaging 115.4. We also garnered the Coach of the Year award. Even though I think GM of the year is more appropriate. But then again I'm a little biased.
Irving finished on the third team All-NBA averaging 21.7ppg/3.8rpg/6.7apg.
And now we head into the 2017 playoffs against the Atlanta Hawks. My contract situation is still up in the air as Jordan and I agreed to not discuss during the year, so I'm hoping we can storm the playoffs like last year and give me another feather in the cap when those discussions are held at the end of the year.
