After the just completed title year we weren't looking to make any major moves. Just some little tweaks here and there. This was the final year of my contract with the Bobcats and I was determined to enjoy the champagne buzz for as long as I could and keep things easy peasy.
We picked up the options on:
Parker 4.67mil
McCollum 2.42mil
Embiid 2.03mil
C. Zeller 5.32mil
And passed on Ilyasova's 8.4 mil option.
We made qualifying offers to Harrison,Stokes, and McDermott as restricted FAs.
Turned down the offer on Plumlee as 3.11mil was too much for a 5mpg player.
We started with the 30th pick in the first round and were looking for a perimeter player who could shoot. We had a couple of offers to move up in the first round and a lot of them were interesting, but ultimately we decided to sit pat. We weren't looking to break up the team for another young prospect. We were able to get the shooter we were looking for in Vince Price with the 30th pick. In the second round I just picked up some front court beef with Cory Terrell.
NBA draft trades:
Timberwolves 1st rd 21st pick
for
Raptors Amir Johnson and 2017 2nd rd pick
Rockets 1st rd 25th pick and 2017 2nd rd pick
for
Wizards Nene
Pacers 2nd rd pick 22 and 2017 2nd rd pick
for
Nuggets Foye
Draft Recap:
Free Agency: Due to all the young players we had we were still operating way under the cap. Therefore, we were able to target and land a starting SG to add even more power to the starting lineup in Dion Waiters for 4yrs/55.5mil. In addition we were able to bring back McDermott 3yr/14.42mil, Gordon 1yr/1.72mil, and Mullens 2yr/5.83mil. Jarnell Stokes came back on the qualifying offer. We matched an offer for A. Harrison 4yr/24.70mil. That signing was to protect an asset for future use more than really wanting to keep him for next year.
As for the rest of the league's major moves:
K. Bryant 1yr/6.72 to the Rockets
E. Gordon 4yr/16.40 to the Rockets
Al Jefferson 3yr/37.47 to the Bulls
Deron Williams 3yr/38.94 to the Bulls
Gilchrist 4yr/26.01 to the Suns
D. Lillard 3yr/48.26 resigned with Trailblazers
B. Jennings 4yr/66.67 to the Heat
M. Ellis 4yr/35.07 to the Cavs
Mayo 3yr/25.97 to the Knicks
Looks like the Bulls and Rockets were the big winners. And the Cavs replaced Waiters with Ellis. I got a nice note from them on taking their best player for the second year in a row.
We are going to have some moves to make in the pre-season to make this roster look exactly like I want. But overall I'm very happy that we were able to add another star caliber piece in Waiters. We have another year or two before the rookie contracts of Parker and Holden start to come due. At that time we might have to make some hard choices or convince Jordan to accept going into the luxury tax bracket. But for now we are going to enjoy the position we are in right now.
