Let me preface this by saying I am not a huge Madden fan. NCAA has always been my game of choice since I can remember, though I do pick up Madden every few years. But I have been reading the recent articles breaking down the improvements from a gameplay and audiovisual standpoint. Along with that, I have also viewed the comments from the OS community in regards to these articles and videos. I don't want to put all of the community in a box, but it truly makes me sick looking at these reactions. ... Read More

I will try and keep this short and sweet since the blogs and forums over the last few days have been blown up with Madden impressions. Here is how my week went with Madden:

Tuesday - Dying with anticipation i began my download in the morning before work, then came home for lunch to play it. First impressions - great presentation and graphics. Running game is improved. Passing game seems tougher compared to M11 which was was too effortless, even on All Pro. Some flashes of NCAA-like ... Read More

There is no doubt in my mind that NBA 2K11 is hands down the best overall basketball game of this generation. But personally, the fun factor does not last very long for me. On the other hand, the NBA Live series is far from a technical marvel but I truly enjoyed the experience NBA Live 10 offered. The following is what I envision as the recipe for an awesome basketball experience (this is just for fun and purely hypothetical):

Controls - A mix of Live 10/NBA Elite 11: I love the right ... Read More

As someone who defended NBA Live 10 last year for making strides in the right direction last year and bringing something relatively fresh to the table to give NBA 2K some competition, I cannot believe how many steps backwards the series has taken with Elite 11. I played the demo once and already deleted it from my XBOX and took it out of my Gamefly queue. Where do I begin??

First the positives:
  • I think the control scheme is great and mostly responsive. My gripe

Listen, I have no allegiance to 2K or EA. I love 2K basketball, NFL2K5 I agree in many ways is the best football game of its time. But the NCAA Football series of last generation was probably my favorite. I say all of that to say that I give both companies equal opportunities to impress me from one year to the next. Hell, I even gave Backbreaker a shot this year just to try something different.

Last year was the first time this generation that I can honestly say EA came away with ... Read More

So I am a huge NCAA fan, and a college football fan first and foremost. After the NCAA 11 demo came out I thought it would be the best football experience on a console since NCAA 06. In many ways it is. The locomotion, graphics, and gameplay are all major improvements over the previous installments this generation. I typically only get one football game a year, as I only have the time to play one. And I had no intentions of buying Madden...until I played the demo.

Everyone is entitled ... Read More

I was all hyped up for NCAA Football 11 after seeing the first screenshots, ESPN integration, and locomotion vids. But after looking at this vid...I am completely disappointed. Same choppy steps and jukes. They slowed down the vid to show a spin move that looks like the same animation from previous installments? Will EA ever fix the foot plants on WR routes? APF 2K8 got this right back in 2007. Here it is 2010 and NCAA still doesnt get it...

This just blew my entire day. I sincerely ... Read More

So after going back and forth renting NBA Live and NBA 2K this year, my initial impressions lead me to choose NBA 2K for a purchase. Well, as I noted in a previous blog, I quickly became disappointed in 2K's 2010 offering and traded it back in while it still had decent value (still a ripoff, but that's another story).

I went awhile without a b-ball game, but I finally broke down and got Live 10. After adjusting the sliders a bit I can truly say for the first time in years that it ... Read More

So I have formulated a list of what I promise to do, or not to do in sports gaming for 2010:

1) I will NOT buy NBA 2K11 - I have been a repeat offender the last several years with NBA 2K**. I buy into the hype only to come away disappointed weeks later. The game always offers the best animations and realism. And when you play the perfect game, there is no doubt in my mind that it's the best b-ball game in the business. HOWEVER, playing the perfect game in 2K is da*n near impossible ... Read More

For a guy, married, with two small children...my time spent on video games has dwindled down to 7-8 hours a week (10 on a good week).

I used to be heavy into season and franchise modes. Back when NCAA FBall 06 was out, I had time to invest in back-to-back-to-back Dynasties. NBA 2K7 was a gem for me when it first arrived on the scene and I took my Wizards (R.I.P) through a full season and a NBA title. Since then I have hardly been able to complete a season in any sports game, let alone ... Read More

SLIDERS ARE THE BANE OF MY EXISTENCE!!

It seems like every time a new sports game comes out, I have to listen or read about how using the right sliders can improve the gaming experience.

The fact of the matter is that NONE of my favorite sports games of the previous generations (Tecmo Super Bowl, NBA Live 05, NCAA FBall 2002, and 2006, etc…) required me to alter the sliders to get a full gaming experience. All I had to do was up the difficulty level a bit and VOILA the ... Read More

…Rent both (if possible) then make your decision. The fact is that both games are solid this year for their own different reasons. It’s these reasons that are a matter of preference for b-ball gamers. Based on my experience here is how the games measure up:

2K10 vs Live 10

Smoother gameplay and animations vs tighter controls and less canned animation
Less shimmer and more realistic body types vs better arenas and lighting (some faces are better as well)
Better ... Read More

So after giving Madden 10 a second chance, I was so impressed with it that I actually finished an entire season. That's the first time I have done that with Madden since probably 2004. To me that speaks volumes about the effort EA put into the game. I have two kids and a pretty busy life even outside of work, so I actuallyDEVOTED time to play this game.

So how did my first season turn out? I played with the Colts on All-Pro. I struggled with my running game much of the season (Brown ... Read More

There is always a lot of Madden hate around this time of the year. And I sometimes indulge in it as well. But I wanted to take the opportunity to praise EA for what it got right in this year's version of Madden:

1) QB Throwing Animations - yes, some of them are generic. But I have used the Colts in my first franchise and I never get tired of seeing P. Mannings textbook high delivery. Big Ben and Romo's came out pretty good as well.

2) In-Game Cutscenes - while the referee ... Read More

I downloaded the Live demo last week and played it twice. After the first game I must say I was very impressed with the new dribble moves, the graphics, and the effort they into making the game better. After the second playthrough I began to see the same ol Live issues (though to their credit they fixed quite a few). The player movement is still robotic, framerate is still sketchy, and defensive play is not even close to the 2K series.

That being said, based on the draft combine, recent ... Read More
