My 2010 Sports Gaming Resolution (4 Months Late)
Posted on April 6, 2010 at 11:57 AM.
So I have formulated a list of what I promise to do, or not to do in sports gaming for 2010:

1) I will NOT buy NBA 2K11 - I have been a repeat offender the last several years with NBA 2K**. I buy into the hype only to come away disappointed weeks later. The game always offers the best animations and realism. And when you play the perfect game, there is no doubt in my mind that it's the best b-ball game in the business. HOWEVER, playing the perfect game in 2K is da*n near impossible with the spotty isomotion controls, outlandish shooting percentages, missed layups, and nonexistent online play. Not to mention that while many reviewers raved about 2K's graphics this year, I have not seen a drastic improvement since the first iteration (2K6). Unless the engine is improved and the online functionality is fixed, I will not waste my time or money.

2) I will NOT buy Madden 11 - If you are looking for me to completely bash Madden, I am sorry to disappoint. The fact is, I thought Madden 10 was great. This is the first time in years that I have actually felt compelled enough to finish a season (and win a Super Bowl with the Colts). So why wont you buy it next year, you say? Well because immediately after I finished that season, I became bored and went back to NCAA Football 10. Listen, I love the NFL, but college football is where it's at for me. The atmosphere, playbook, and formations are more enjoyable for me watching the game and this also translates into playing the game as well. NCAA 09 nailed the gameplay (which strangely took a step backwards in NCAA 10). Now, if they can focus on the atmosphere and catch up to the Madden graphics engine, I will be sold.

3) I will avoid buying other sports games as impulse buys due to the start of their seasons - Yes I am looking at your MLB 11, NHL 11, and Tiger Woods 11. On the other hand, I will more than likely pick up FIFA World Cup because I have always enjoyed playing through a tourney with the best your country has to offer as opposed to club teams.

4) I will NOT purchase Backbreaker simply because it is an alternative to Madden - Yes, I am as angry as everyone else that Madden still has the football industry in a stranglehold. But from what I have Backbreaker, outside of its gorgeous Euphoria engine, it appears to be a glorified, slightly more realistic version of Blitz. And I am not sure if that's enough to warrant a purchase. I truly hope it succeeds though.

5) But I will definitely buy Tecmo Bowl for PSN day one - Because though its playbook is limited, it's one of the first football games that ever really introduced strategy. It's hella fun, and I believe teams and players are fully customizable...sign me up!

6) Lastly, I probably will break one of the promises I just listed above - because I am sports fanatic (or a straight sucker depending on how you look at it).

I am not buying a single game this year. I just purchased MLB 2k10, and that is it for me this year.

How is that MLB 2k10? I tried MLB 10 and it's beautiful, but I have grown really tired of the pitching interface.
