Sliders arent the answer
Posted on October 8, 2009 at 03:13 PM.
SLIDERS ARE THE BANE OF MY EXISTENCE!!

It seems like every time a new sports game comes out, I have to listen or read about how using the right sliders can improve the gaming experience.

The fact of the matter is that NONE of my favorite sports games of the previous generations (Tecmo Super Bowl, NBA Live 05, NCAA FBall 2002, and 2006, etc…) required me to alter the sliders to get a full gaming experience. All I had to do was up the difficulty level a bit and VOILA the game played wonderfully!

For someone like me who has a full time jobs and kids, I don’t want to spend hours on end trying to find the best sliders to fix a game that should have been playable out of the box. Adding these sliders in games is basically a company’s way to get a game out by its release date without having to fully test the product for optimal performance.

Listen, I know sliders have their benefits. Having the option to cut down interceptions by the user and CPU because they are clearly out of control or cutting up game speed because it’s to slow for your taste is perfectly fine. But having to cut up FG percentage for layups/dunks just because the friggin’ game allows you to blow 50% of those shots inexplicably is absurd.

I have tweaked sliders before to help games flow a little better. But having to change every single slider to get the “best” experience??? Color me uninterested!

Cwash, this may just be the SINGLE GREATEST POST I have ever come across on the crutch that has become sliders. I recently had a discussion about this on another board with a member and it's almost like 'patch' has become a bad word. Well stated and straight to the point! Well done brother!

Oh yeah...GO COLTS!!

It sounds good, and I hear where you're coming from, but the reality is that games have raised expectations since then, and they have expanded to multiple audiences, many of which would like to alter the experience to their liking.

But if the spirit of this post is that the programmers should put more thought into how the game ships... then I whole-heartedly agree. Sliders should not be a crutch.

i completely agree!!!!!!! man remember the days when you just popped the game in, found the difficulty and boom! you could play for hours...i thought with a next gen console with the greater gaming power and such the game play would be better!!!!!!...i just you could pop in a game and play without throwing 4 int's a game, why in the world do linebackers just so high all the time? lol

Im in total agreement, not only on the sliders but the patches too. I can understand when it's just roster updates and the like, but when your coming back every 2 months because the core of the gameplay is broken, I have a issue with that. It makes you think after awhile that it's all deliberate, especially when they try to make you pay for some of that crap

Amen brotha! The thing I hate the most about sliders.......it kills multiplayer gaming. What do you do if someone wants to slide the game a certain way that doesn't line up with the way you play? What a hassle! Sports games should only have 3 levels-novice, experienced, and expert.

I love sliders. I love how you have to play the game 1st so you notice something is off then go in and fine tune the sliders accordingly. Line blocking is jacked up adjust sliders, fatigue is jacked up adjust sliders, Dline no pressure adjust sliders. Are you serious I've said this before shouldn't the default settting for sliders be something like "Work Right"

Are you serious? I know its a video game and I'm a grown man and its nothing to get worked up about but do I really need to play adjust, play adjust just to get the game to work right. If there are 10 to 15 sliders and I have to adjust each one 2 or 3 times to reach the optimal setting thats a lot of play and adjust when the default setting really should be work right the 1st time. I've said it before I'm completely screwed if I'm at my homies house and he's got a completely different set of sliders...how am I supposed to compete with that House rules would give any slider master a competitive edge from the door...LMAO

I agree with everything said in this post.

However, I don't think we could live without sliders in this day and age of sports gaming because 1. we are so used to them by now
2. many of us depend on them and
3. it can provide the gamer with the type of gameplay experience that he/she is looking for if they are willing to spend the time making the edits.

I hate editing sliders, but once I find the right combination that helps me enjoy the game better, I am happy.

The bottom line is that sliders can change a game that you think is just ok out of the box into a game that you love to play.

Only thing I'm saying is that straight out the box the game should work realistically. If things like line blocking, fatigue, and awareness worked like they do in the NFL then you wouldn't have to adjust anything. Its like someone asking you a question and you say oh somewhere between 4 and 6 when the answer is just 5! It just seems lazy to me.

IMO sliders should be used more for skill level adjustments not actual gameplay. If you are having trouble beating realistic man coverage you can adjust sliders if you need more time in the pocket you can adj pass rush sliders. I don't agree with adjusting sliders just to get the gameplay to work properly so thats the difference.

i agree man the only sliders i like are the ones at whitecastle lol but yea man i wish games didn't have the sliders. hopefully the developers will listen to us and give us games that don't slide

Thank you for spelling "VOILA" properly.
On the Genesis, when sports games didn't have sliders we dealt with it. I agree, that my favorite sports games of the past years didn't require tweaking.
My approach to sports gaming is a three step process (if you're interested)
1. Simulate a whole season in default on the duration you want to play to see what the game does statistically on its own. Then tweak to adjust for lopsided statistics.
2. Play the game and adjust as you go for physics or mechanics that might seem off to you.
3. Play the game, have fun, and forget about what other people think makes the game play properly.

While I agree that many companies seem to be using sliders as a crutch in order to get away with not fully polishing a game's gameplay I think sliders are still necessary. Not all gamers are of the same skill level and some want an experience tailored to their wants/needs. Sliders give the player added control over what exactly should be happening during a game or at least what they can handle.

To say sliders are not needed is just plain untrue.
Instead of bashing sliders (doesn't make any sense to do so seeing as it gives the player more control, why wouldn't you want that?) people should be getting fed up with the game companies shipping half finished products which require sliders to appreciate.
