2K10 vs Live 10: My Two Cents...
Posted on October 8, 2009 at 09:35 AM.
…Rent both (if possible) then make your decision. The fact is that both games are solid this year for their own different reasons. It’s these reasons that are a matter of preference for b-ball gamers. Based on my experience here is how the games measure up:

2K10 vs Live 10

Smoother gameplay and animations vs tighter controls and less canned animation
Less shimmer and more realistic body types vs better arenas and lighting (some faces are better as well)
Better Association mode and new My Player mode vs Adidas Live Run
Bad frame rate (continuation from last year) vs solid frame rate
Great online play (if you can ever get connected and can handle the sluggish FPS) vs. unrealistic online dunkfests (but at least you can connect and have a solid FPS)
Subtle game improvements to an already winning formula vs drastic improvements to an up and coming title
Great commentary and pre-game celebrations vs outstanding arena atmosphere and crowd noise
Outdated Isomotion (made even more difficult with the Left trigger now) vs. easy to pick up, but hard to master dribble moves

As far as my preference goes, I have to say I prefer Live 10. I popped in 2K10 for about an hour and played as my Wiz Kids. I enjoyed it a bit, but by the end of the game I was ready to be done with it. I came away disappointed with the frame rate (though it wasn’t as bad as some people made it out to be) and I don’t see enough of a differentiation from last years game to make a 60 dollar purchase. After that first game I tried to get online to try a few different modes and had a difficult time getting on at all. When I did, it was barely playable.

Live has its fair share of issues, like guys still wanting to hang around out of bounds when you throw the ball their way. I still don’t dig the player models but they have improved in the last few years. But some players still appear too skinny. The musculature isn’t right with some of the hoopsters as well. And why does Lebron and D Wade look Albino? Last time I checked they were Black, so what’s with the light tint? Animation transitions still aren’t up to par with the 2K series either. And I am tired of big men being able to cross people up when driving to the post. I thought that was supposed to be a thing of the past.

With all that being said though, I still enjoyed Live 10. What it does right, it does very well. It provides a fresh experience and has established itself as being more sim than ever. Not to mention the fact that everything it offers works out of the box unlike 2K10.

Hopefully this helps as I try to present facts instead of an biased opinion. I wrote an article a few weeks ago entitled “Looks like another mediocre year for b-ball lovers…”. I still feel that way. I will not be buying either of these games. But I know that many people will be. So I seriously suggest renting them first before spending your money.

Here's hoping that this is the year for NCAA Basketall. The presentation looks BANANAS!

Nice blog.

I'm seriously starting to think, I should take this year of b-ball gaming off. I bought 2k thinking about taking it back or trading it in for Live, but it's kind of a pick your poison method this year.

I can either have 2k commentary/post-game or Live's tighter controls/less canned animations/sim out of the box.

If Live post-game & commentary was up to par, I think I would be playing that.

Hopefully NCAA does it for me(presentation is definately off the hook), also tap of the button play calling, that is going to be the best thing to come to video b-ball gaming, no more wasting valuabe seconds of the shot clock scrolling through menus.

I'm right there with you on the frame rate. I thought that people who had were were just making a big deal out of what was probably nothing but man was I wrong.

I'm a 2K fan til I die so I love game. But I do think that live has made some good strides this year over the previous years. I think that fans of both games will be satisfied and should enjoy their favorite NBA sim for the 09-10 year

Excellent thoughts. I think this year's offerings are much better than last year's, though it is weird how they get different things right and wrong. Next year they might both have the whole package right, lol. I bought Live and don't regret it at all. If they don't patch Dynasty I'll still love Dynamic Season. Your blog is refreshing compared to some of the fan boys lurking about FWIW.

Thanks. I agree with you in a lot of your comments. I am also dissapointed about the fps problem on 2k, I dont know why 2k doesn't fix it once for all. Still the feature side and presentation are awesome. It is interesting to see lot of people engaged with Live to try something fresh. I have to say that the demo of Live was very engaging. Bottom line next year both games will be amazing.
