My Week With Madden 12
Posted on August 15, 2011 at 12:13 PM.
I will try and keep this short and sweet since the blogs and forums over the last few days have been blown up with Madden impressions. Here is how my week went with Madden:

Tuesday - Dying with anticipation i began my download in the morning before work, then came home for lunch to play it. First impressions - great presentation and graphics. Running game is improved. Passing game seems tougher compared to M11 which was was too effortless, even on All Pro. Some flashes of NCAA-like concerns with the numerous LB swats, but can be fixed with sliders.

Wednesday and Thursday - Played some more and began to notice some of the issues people mentioned in the forums at OS, but overall doesn't detract from the fun I am having with this game.

Friday - Meh. The new elements such as the team intros, kick presentation cameras, etc, are beginning to wear off and I am starting to think this game doesnt play much better than last year's. I like that I can throw the ball down the field now, but throws in the flats are damn near impossible (no, I am not throwing bullet passes). Tried to mess with sliders to little avail. The discrepancy in speed between players is off. No way Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler should look faster than my star running back. Looks like they definitely improved in some areas, but may have taken a step back in a few others.

Saturday - Becoming quite bored with the demo, but I play one last time and play NCAA right afterwards. My experience with NCAA was so much more refreshing. Simply put , NCAA's gameplay just felt 'right' and Madden 12's did not.

Sunday - Went to Gamestop and cancelled my preorder for Madden 12.

Listen fellas, I am not here to hate on Madden 12 in any way. I am one of the few who actually put more time into Madden 11 last year than NCAA 11. But I can't help but to feel disappointed with what I have seen so far. I had planned on skipping NCAA completely this year expecting Madden to blow it away, but I am SO glad I went against my gut feelings and picked up NCAA anyway. I will still rent Madden - it's in my queue. Maybe some time with my Colts with change my mind. And I know some gameplay issues will be tweaking before release. But for those thinking that the release will be drastically better than the demo, you are in for a rude awakening. Here's to hoping I am wrong!

@cwash020 i am in the same boat as you; other than i havent cancelled my preorder of Madden12 yet; but the demo has me concerned alot more after playing it a couple times a day since downloading.
I think there is too much glitts and glamour poured into this years version, and not enough for the gameplay side of things. Two hits consecutive tackles can just win me over; and all of the wierd animations that look buggy is starting to turn me off. i did exactly what you did and turned my attention back to NCAA12 and was instantly refreshed. I ve watched numerous videos of Madden12 so far, and it is becoming more aware to me that i may not like what i get this year if i still go ahead with the order. As of right now, the full game is in circulation with Celebs, and gaming media, so what i probably see right now could be the end result. I have been crossing my fingers and checking out any Madden12 video out there hoping that this possible nightmare isnt real!
cheers
btw great topic.

Thanks for the positive response. Just does not seem like the EA staff can get it right this generation. Last gen I think Madden hit their stride with Madden 2004 and then they kept true to that formula and improved it with some great additions in the following years. Seems like Madden 10 was a significant step up from Madden 09 this gen, but since then I have not seen any improvement.

I ahev to agree, since madden 10 theres not been a ton of changes, but the one thing that annoyed me faster than anything was pressing a button to skip the cutscene after every playt, x skips but brings up audibles for positions, o switched players and it switched between r3 and r3 to skip certain cutscenes which really took me out of the gameplay, which is improved slightly but nothing significantly, i was thinking of maybe buying this on a black friday now dont even see that happening anymore

Yeah I 100 percent agree, when I first played I was excited with the over all look and presentation and had a few good game, but when you up the difficult level you begin to see the flaws in the game and how EA has yet to figure out how to truly make a game that replicated specific player and team other than ratings.

I just don't understand what the aversion is on the part of EA to real-time physics. This would literally cure a ton of the issues that plague this game and NCAA. But yet, asking them to implement this is like asking them if they want cancer. Why is that? I have no idea. But, they continue to polish a turd. It's a shame. Sure, the player models may not be the best, but that is the case with FIFA and they still went ahead and used physics. So why won't madden and NCAA use them? As long as Madden and NCAA continue with canned animations and a crappy engine, the majority of the bugs will continue to rear their ugly head. Superhuman LB, psychic DBs, LBs and DL warping to make tackles they would NEVER make in real life; all of these things could be remedied with physics. Sure, the game may not be a 10 even then, but holy cow would it play realistically. And that would be a welcome change.

The simple answer to your question Todd is - Because they can. Basic economics. They continue to make profits off Madden/NCAA while simply tweaking the engine from one year to the next. Implementing real time physics would require a complete overhaul which would drive up incurred costs for them. It's sucks, because it's long overdue in my opinion. While Backbreaker DEFINITELY had it's fair share of issues (I thought the game was a 7 at best). It's physics engine and different take on the genre in general was refreshing and removed the staleness of this generations fball titles.

I'd love to see real time physics. That said I'm disappointed in NCAA 12 and am hoping Madden 12 will be better. I like the smoothness and feel of the players in M12 and it's overall polish is a lot better. I like the M12 demo although I really don't like the default camera angle. NCAA 12's is much better.

I only get one football game per year and it's normally been NCAA. But the super swatting LBs in NCAA, the removal of the r-stick juke in NCAA, the continued foot sliding and horrible player momentum you see in NCAA, etc are really bugging me. I will take one final shot with NCAA after the patch. If I'm disappointed it will get traded for Madden most likely.

interesting I thought just the opposite haha. I thought Madden 12 was a much more refreshing . I like NCAA 12 but for some reason after playing Madden 12 It's not the same. Perhaps it's the presentation and camera angles that are "fooling me" i don't know but overall Madden 12 just seems right to me.Players seem to have more weight and the game seems to flow better.DOn't get me wrong it still has flaws for sure but even as a demo it just seems like a more complete game, and with DPP and improved franchise and superstar mode I can't help but look forward to it still. The Football fan in me needs one game a year at least, last year I stuck with NCAA but this year I think i'm actually gonna be shipping NCAA 12 back to amazon and getting Madden. Both games are gonna be flawed and we know it at this point but I still feel overall Madden is gonna be slightly better.

Hey, to each his own jagsrock. I was kind of the same way last year - when everyone was praising NCAA I was the one lowly soul in the corner who preferred Madden. I am still hoping some time with the full release will change my mind, but for now it's a rental at best for me. I do think the weight and momentum of the players in Madden felt better than NCAA 12, I will agree with you there.

As far as the super DBs/LBs in NCAA I have noticed that sliders have helped a bit. I have two sets of sliders I am working with - one for AA which basically cuts the pass reaction and nterception sliders down to 30. The other is a set of varsity sliders that for the most part takes USER levels down to 30 and CPU up to 70, with the exception of a few sliders here and there. The AA sliders work, but games are becoming a bit too easy. The varsity sliders actually produce much closer games - but the LB/secondary run defense is suspect and I get pancaked way too much on the DLine.

It's a demo. The inability to change teams, stadiums, weather, settings, etc will create boredom. From what I read from a guy that has the game (part of an EA program) he confirmed retail is better than demo but cannot give specifics until the 26th.

There arent many demos out there that will keep interest over an extended period of time. Personally, best Madden in years.
