I think that people have greatly misunderstood why I am such a huge proponent for full editing and roster and ratings customization. The consensus is that I want to cheese out the game in very arcade fashion. Admittedly, I tried that long ago...it sucked. I seriously have to have tough competition to enjoy the game of football. I want it to be like trying to beat Bobby Fisher at chess. But, see...because of that, I have my own idea of what competition level is...far apart from any other individual most likely, too. Giving me full customization has been the best way to achieve that and have fun with the game. At the same time, what about those players that pop up out of nowhere that no one has ever heard of and takes the league by storm. I want to be able to accurately put that guy in the game with my perceived ratings per what competition he should bring, make sure he's in the starting lineup and so on. With the current Madden 13 set up...I can't do all of that. As a team's coach, only then could I affect the depth chart. As the coach or player I could surely use XP points to boost him...but it's going to take forever. Oh, wait, I know...I'll wait for Donny Moore's update. DANG IT...I'll then have to start over and still boost that player to how I think he should be rated, which means I'll be spending hours upon hours in practice modes scraping up some XP points (if I can...because what if I totally suck at doing XP drills? What then?). It would just be a whole lot easier and save me a lot of excruciating time and energy (not to mention that I f*cking hate practice mode) to just be able to instantaneously, right then and there in the middle of my season at any point I wish, to edit a player, and then I can go about my business of playing football.
One more thing, too. So many people have been harping on me about the connected careers mode being the all-in-one savior to things because now offline is like online and online is like offline. Let me make something calmly clear...and, yes, I'm saying this calm and without hate in my heart. I don't want anything like an online experience when I'm playing Madden. I get enough of the online experience when I'm in forums such as these here at OS. Trust me, it's enough to warrant listening to more death metal than I already do. I just want to be able to have my league and my teams and players the way I want them to be. If I have the right to choose and buy the game just for me...then I should have the right to customize it just for me, too.

Just wanted to add that if EA themselves can edit the rosters weekly, there's no logical reason the user can't do it on their own. I think editing was taken out for the sole purpose of trapping the average Madden consumer into HAVING to purchase a new Madden every year from here on out simply for roster updates. Our worst fears materialized.

They did it for financial reasons. Hands down. I hate that some people there are in jeopardy of losing their jobs (though I know they'll find another, if it happens), but I don't like how the ship is being steered, either.
Taking away multi-team control is a financial move, too. It forces people to purchase their own copy of the game per playing at the same time. The catch-22 they are going to realize this year will likely be that what they've done to force more sales will likely lose out to what they won't make in sales because of features held back.
