I find that most of the sports games I play are anything but "pick-up-and-play." Sports like American Football, Football/Soccer and even Boxing can get quite involved so I find I have to "study."
For example, after fighting the learning curve in Forza I took advantage of the fact a nice gentleman and Forza lover was providing free lessons. While I'm still not that good at racing games I improved markedly.
For FIFA, I printed out pages upon pages from the internet of strategy guides and tips and went through them.
For Madden I bought the guide in the store, printed out an online guide and read numerous things on the internet. I've also spent a bit of time in practice mode.
Even for Fight Night I find myself watching youtubes (In particular watching how Fraizer beat Ali so I might eventually get that elusive trophy for beating Ali on G.O.A.T.)
My question is this. Do most of you just get in and play or do you read/watch etc. to learn how to get decent in sports games? Do you spend a lot of time in training/practice modes or ignore them? Do you simply play match upon match in order to improve?
Just curious how other gamers do it.

I don't study, typically because I already know enough about the sport to be somewhat successful.

For the most part, I generally watch the team I play with, and/or I play a dynasty/franchise with them so i know each players weakness and how to better use them.
