What a month
Posted on June 4, 2010 at 11:31 AM.
Well May has finally come to a close and my bank account may never recover. I've always had a bit of an issue with buying to many games but I think I may have finally learned my lesson after the past couple of weeks. May was a ridiculous month for games and I tried to play as many as I could. I've had a lot of thoughts going through my head on a lot of them and figured it was time to make my debut in OS blog world.

First off is Red Dead Redemption, I really don't have anything else to add to what's already been said since the reviews started coming out. I'm about 20 hours in and I love this game to death. I'm surprisingly interested by the story and it has kept me coming back for more missions which is something I can't really say about any of the GTA games. Usually I get to a mission that gets to frustrating and just give up and never touch the game again after getting maybe 1/2 way through. Red Dead is a completely different story, I've enjoyed the story, I love all the hunting and survivalist challenges and I've even kept up with a lot of the side missions from strangers which is something I usually do as little as possible in open world or other big RPGs. Even the multiplayer has got me to come back to it a couple of times which is something I never expected. If you haven't played this game just buy it, it's worth every penny it doesn't matter what kind of games your into. To me this game is hands down the game of the year so far.

On to my biggest dissapointment of the year so far UFC 2010. I'm a big UFC fan and I really enjoyed last years game so I was pretty excited for this years version. Wow was I disappointed. It's not that UFC is a bad game, it's better than last year...I think and it's still a fun game to go 1 on 1 with a friend and have a few matches as long as you both have some idea of the controls. The bad news if your not playing with a friend this game is very hit or miss. For me it's a miss, the campaign mode is pretty weak. Training for fights is just the same thing every time, stats decay after 1 fight if you don't upgrade them that training session and playing against the CPU is frustrating. I like the stand up game but once you get to the mat it gets a lot more frustrating and I can never tell when luck or skill is winning out. Online is where I spent most of my time with this game last year and except for the quitting not counting as a loss which was patched I seem to remember the overall online experience was pretty solid. This year that is not the case at all. Matchmaking was broken when the game released, quick match flat out did not work and creating your own ranked match would work maybe 1/4 of the time at best. Then when I finally did get into a match it was laggy and unresponsive, really just no fun at all. This is the one game I regret buying, it's flat out not worth 60 dollars in the condition it was released in and I've barely played it since the day after I bought. I'll give it another shot after the patch comes out (which took 2 months last year) and play it for another day or two and then probably just trade it in. Do not buy this game. If I could have returned it I would have.

Those were really my two big games of the month, maybe I set the standards to high for UFC but that's just a disappointing game.

Some other games I liked
Split Second is really fun but gets old kind of quick, I started out loving it but I'm on the 6th episode now and I really don't have a lot of desire to go back to it, luckily I got this and Modnation Racers from Gamefly which is also a really fun game. I never get as much into the creative part of these kind of games as I think I will but I still really enjoyed the racing and downloading other peoples Mods and Karts. I'll be keeping it from gamefly for a little while and would probably buy it if I find it for under 40 bucks.

I've gotten back into Fifa World Cup again with the actual event coming up and it is what is, another solid Fifa game that's a little bit better than the last one. I really like the single player modes which is good because the online level of play is way higher than Fifa 2010 which I didn't even play that much of so I've mostly been getting punished online.

Backbreaker just didn't do it for me, I can see the appeal to some people and maybe if I stuck with it for a bit I would like it but it went back in the gamefly envelope after a day.

I had some fun with Splinter Cell. Fun gameplay, good story mode and good multiplayer and online options. To me it was worth the purchase and I'll go back to it every now and then to play with a friend or see what kind of DLC they have out.

Skate 3 is just awesome, clearly the high point in the series so far, the controls are much better than Skate 2 the single player challenges are better and the online options are amazing with all the team options. I liked this game a lot more than I thought I would and am still playing it. It helps to have a couple friends to play the challenges with but even solo this is a worthwhile game.

Well I guess that's it for now, this post ended up being a lot longer than I thought and I think I still left out a couple games. Thanks for reading if you made it to the end and hopefully I'll put something up again sooner rather than later.

You should try Alan Wake. It's awesome, especially late at night. If you have Turtle Beaches you should use those, too, as it will make it even creepier.
