We are now down to only one more week to go before the 2013 NCAA Football season kicks off. There are so many intriguing story lines heading into the season. Will Johnny Manziel live up to the heavy expectations and leave the off the field headlines behind? Who can stop Alabama from becoming the first team in BCS history to win three straight National Championships. Can Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes repeat an undefeated season and play in Ohio State's first Big 10 Championship game and possibly 4th BCS Championship? Will Oregon continue their success under former OC Mark Helfrich? Who will be the ACC Champ, Clemson, FSU, Miami, or maybe a darkhorse like the Hokies of Virginia Tech? It's also a crowded Big 12 race with Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Baylor, and defending Champion Kansas State all contenders with weaknesses. Finally, who will be this season's Cinderella who crashes the BCS? Does Chris Peterson and Boise State have another BCS run ahead or can Jordan Lynch and the Northern Illinois Huskies go to back-to-back BCS games with a favorable schedule ahead of them. It's only one more week before the murky picture of college football becomes a little clearer.

For the third year in an row, the West All-Star team jumped out to a large, double-digit lead, but once again the East launched a huge comeback. For the first time though, the East was able to finish the comeback and pull off a 113-109 victory. LeBron James led the East with 26 points, seven boards, and three assists. Also helping the East was Kevin Durant's cool off. The three-time scoring champ had 22 points in the first half, but was only able to finish with 31, scoring only nine in the whole second half. LeBron grabbed his second All-Star game MVP award and now the focus goes back on real basketball and the push to the Playoofs with the trade deadline this Thursday.

Pujols Leads Cards Over Padres

Pujols 10th Inning RBI Single Lifts Cards Over Padres 5-4

The Cardinals started the year off right by defeating the visiting San Deigo Padres 5-4 in the bottem of the 10th. Albert Pujols went 3-5 with 2 HR's and 4 RBI's and was the major factor in yesterday's win. Adam Wainwright went 7 innings with 7 K's and 3 runs allowed but didn't get the decsion.
Pujols hit an early 2-run shot deep into right to start off the season but ex-Cardinal Ryan Ludwick answered back with a solo HR of his own. Then the Padres scored 2 unanswered runs to lead 3-2 in the bottem of the 6th. CF Colby Rasmus answered the call and hit a solo shot to center field to tie it at 3. Then Pujols did it again by hitting his 2nd HR of the day to take back the lead 4-3. But Ludwick wasn't done by hitting another solo shot off of Ryan Franklin to tie it in the 9th. But in the bottem of the 10th, Pujols hit a RBI single that sent Skip Schumaker home to win 5-4. Skip Schumaker also had a great game going 3-4. Tomorrow is the 2nd game of a 3 game series with San Deigo. Chris Carpenter is on the mound vs Aaron Harang, the ex-Reds ace. Below is yesterday's box score. GO CARDS!

The Cardinals fell 3-2 to the Marlins to open 2011 Spring Training. There were some good and bad to the game. Some good was Reliever Fernando Salas going 3 innings with 0 hits and 0 BB and no runs. Also Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday's back-to-back solo HR's. The bad was sloppy hitting and bad plate vision. The Cardinals were unable to get more than one man on base at a time throught the whole game. Tomorrow Adam Wainwright gets the call for his first start against Javier Vazquez.

Cardinals 2011 Season Preview

Could This Be Pujol's Last Year as a Card?

Unable to get a new for Albert Pujols in the offseason could come back to haunt the Cards. He goes into his final year of his 7-Year 100-Million dollar deal he signed in 2004. Pujols told the media that he would not discuss contract issues in season so it wouldn't be a distraction from the team. Rumor is that he wants a 10-Year 300-Million dollar deal. Who knows if the Cards will be able to afford him? But there is one thing that everyone in St.Louis and the MLB knows, is that the Cards have to win this year to keep the Machine.
After finishing 2nd in the NL Central last year, the Cards are looking to get back to the Playoffs. With making a key aquisition in RF Lance Berkman, the Cards have a great 3-4-5 hitting line up with Pujols, Holliday, and Berkman. Skipper Tony La Russa statted that he couldn't believe their luck when they were able to sign Berkman.
As the team heads to Florida this week, there are many questions to be answered. Will Colby Rasmus be able to hold on to his CF job? Or will his feud with La Russa end up costing his job to promising Jon Jay? Who will be the 3B on Opening Day? David Freese or Daniel Decalso? Also who will be #1 SP? Wainwright or Carpenter? Many questions and more will be answered this Spring Training. Be sure to read Tuesday's recap of Marlins-Cardinals.

Welcome college football fans to the week 4 preview. This week has some pretty big matchups including, #14 Oklahoma State at #4 Texas A&M, #3 Florida State at #24 Clemson, Missouri at #5 Oklahoma, and finally the biggest of them all...#12 Arkansas at #1 Alabama. First lets look at the game of the week.
#12 Arkansas travels to #1 Alabama this Saturday night on ESPN. Last year the Ryan Mallet lead Razorbacks almost knocked off the 'Tide at home but choked in the 2nd half and the the Tide comeback to win. This year both teams are still very talented and this should make for a great game. Both teams have new QB's. Arkansas has Junior Tyler Wilson who has been pretty impresive at times while 'Bama has Sophmore AJ Mccarron who has been fantastic this season. I expect this game to go back and forth, but I give the advantage to 'Bama. They have the #1 defense in the nation right now and their offense is #7. While Arkansas' defense is #32 and their offense is #14. Offense sells the tickets but defenses win championships. My projection 'Bama 31-Arkansas 23.
Now we'll look at #14 Oklahoma State vs #4 Texas A&M. 2 weeks ago OSU fell at home to unranked Arizona and now they'll have to play catchup in the Big 12 from now on due to no confrence championship game. This is a must win for OSU if they still want to be in the hunt for a BCS Bowl. While Texas A&M needs a win to stay in contention for a National Championship. They are sitting at 3-0 and looking good. Their defense has recovered from the loss of Von Miller to the NFL Draft and their offense isnt half bad either. Ill give the advantage to A&M. They are at home in College Station and have a great defense to stop OSU's air raid offense. My projection is OSU 34- A&M 37
My last prediction is #3 FSU at #24 Clemson. Last week Clemson got some national attention by knocking off defending BCS champion Auburn 19-6 at home. But this is a diffirent story.Auburn is a talented team no disrespect to them but FSU is a BCS contender with a much more talented QB. Both teams come into this game with duel-weapon QB's. FSU with EJ Manuel and Clemson withTajh Boyd. Both are off to a good start to the season leading their teams to 3-0 and at the top of the ACC. But I have to go with FSU. Yes their in Death Valley but they just got done knocking off #1(at the time) Oklahoma. They are going to be pumped and ready to go. My projection is #3 FSU 29-#24 Clemson 14.
Now im introducing a new part of the preview. Its called Upset Alert. Each week I'll put one team on Upset Alert and a rating. This week im putting #5 Oklahoma on Upset Alert with a rating of 7.4. They are at home which lowers the rating but they are facing a talanted 2-1 Mizzou team. This rivalry has increased over the years because of the sucsess both teams have had in the past decade. Last year in Columbia, Mizzou knocked off #1 Oklahoma to end OU's BCS hopes. Now they have the oppritunity to do it again in Norman.
It looks like Stephan Garcia has gained the grace of Coach Spurrier and has locked up the starting roll again. He started last week in the 35-10 win over Navy going 14-17 with 3 TD passes and no INTs. He has been scheduled again as the starter for SC's game against Vanderbelt

This has been the biggest week in college football this year. We saw #1 Oklahoma fall on the road to #7 Florida State. We also saw #8 Wisconsin get shutout at home to the NIU Huskies 17-0! Defending BCS Champion Auburn got their first loss of the season also falling 19-7 to unranked Clemson. Then #3 LSU suffered their first loss to #23 Miss State. #13 Nebraska fell at home to unranked Washington. Three out of the Top 5 teams fell. All of them on the road. It also seems like the loss of Tyrell Pryor is catching up to Ohio State, as they fell on the road to unranked Miami. Ohio State's offense was no where to be found the entire game and neither was their defense in the first Q allowing 17 first quarter points.
It looks like Florida State is now many peoples favorite to play Alabama in the BCS Championship game in New Orleans. After taking down #1 Oklahoma at home, they've moved up to #3 in the latest polls. To be honest, they are my favorite to play Alabama too. I think as long as they dont fall in the ACC champonship game, they will be in the BCS Champ. I just dont see Stanford going all the way. They still have to play #6 Oregon and #25Notre Dame. Then if they can beat Oregon, they still would have to play in the PAC-12 Championship game.

This is another big week in college football. Lets get to the biggest game of the week. ESPN College Gameday is in Tallahassee Florida for one of the biggest games of the year and is expected to be a good one. Its a make or break game you might say. Its #1 Oklahoma at #7 Florida State. We've been looking forward to this game since the 2011 schedule came out. Both teams have their eyes on a BCS National Championship but a loss today could shatter those dreams. Oklahoma is lead by QB Landry Jones who has thrown for 222yds and 5 touchdown passes. Then there's Florida State. Led by junoir QB EJ Manuel, who is a duel-threat QB. Not only has he passed for 323 yds and 4 TD's but he has also rushed for 129yds and 2 TD's. Oklahoma's D will have their hands full trying to stop this young QB. But this Florida State team alos lost one of their biggest playmakers in week 1 to injury. Chris Thompson was injured in the 2nd Q in a 28-7 win over UL Monroe. He is set to return in week 6 but is unable to play in his team's biggest game of the year. After looking at both teams, I give the edge to Oklahoma. Their defense is more experienced and I know Coach Stoops will have his D ready for EJ Manuel. Plus they have a good QB in Landry Jones who I believe will lead Oklahoma over FSU 27-17.
Another big game this weekend is #4 Stanford at #24 Arizona. Last week Nick Foles lead the Wildcats over #6(at the time) Oklahoma St. This week they face another BCS hopefull and this time they get thim at home. But the problem is Brandon Weeb isnt Andrew Luck. No disrespect to Mr.Weeb but the two are on completly diffrent levels. Luck,as long as he dosnt get hurt, is a sure #1 draft pick in this upcomming NFL Draft. He is the best QB in all of college football. Thats why I give the advantage to Stanford. He will give Arizona's D headaches all day and Nick Foles cant throw 3 INTs against Stanford. Thats why my projection is Stanford 42- Arizona 20.
My last preview is #12 Michigan St at #19 Notre Dame. Its been a long time since Notre Dame was considered as a BCS contender. A dark horse but still a contender. This another make or break game. Notre Dame has to win this game if they want to crack the BCS. No way around it. Michigan State needs a win to stay undefeated. It will give them a big boost in the Big 10 if they can go in undefeated. This is more of a bigger game for Notre Dame. They havnt won a BCS game since 2005 and that is enternaty to Notre Dame fans. They just want to forget the Charlie Weis years and move on. If they can go undefeated, they will be highly considered for a Suger Bowl apperance. My projection is Michigan St 14-Notre Dame 23

The main story from last weeks college football games has to be Oklahoma State falling at home to unranked(at the time) Arizona. Arizona led the whole game through. Taking an early 6-0 lead(missed PAT) after a fumble recovery, the Wildcts never looked back. Nick Foles was great. Even with him throwing 3 INT on the day, he had a great game. 22 for 40 and 3 TD and 315 yds. He lead the scoring for the underdog Wildcats. They pulled off probably the greatest upset this year. Going into Blackwater and getting a win isnt easy, especially when OSU was #6 in the nation with BCS hopes. They could still pull it off but they will have to beat Oklahoma in Norman which will not be an easy task. Below is the OSU-UA boxscore

Also Auburn is on the right track to defending their 2011 BCS Championship. Now at 2-0 after defeating Mississippi St last week, face a 2-0 Clemson Tigers team in Death Valley. But thats not even the worst of their schedule. If they want to even repeat as SEC champs, they'll have to face #11 South Carolina and #15 Arkansas back-to-back on the road. Then a home game vs #18 Florida then back on the road October 22nd vs #3 LSU. If they can even make it through that part of their schedule, they have the Iron Bowl vs #2 Alabama. This was important for Auburn to start the season off this way because the way I see it, they'll be lucky to make a Capitol One Bowl apperance.
Last week, South Carolina QB Stephan Garcia was replaced at halftime during South Carolina's 39-24 win over Georgia. After playing subpar in the 1st half, Coach Spurrier told the media he was very unpleased with Garcia's performance and would not be the starting QB in the 2nd half. Backup QB Casey Shaw led the Gamecocks to dominate the Bulldogs in the 2nd half. Which leads us to another chapter in the Stephan Garcia saga. Has Coach Spurrier had enough with Garcia's inconsistancy and finally benched the senior QB and now starting the sophmore backup? Coach Spurrier only told the media at practice today "That whoever is going to start this Saturday vs Navy, will have to prove he can start in practice." It looks as Garcia maybe has finally crossed the line.

Game Notes
Alabama enters this game at #3 in the country. Last year in Tuscaloussa, they were #1 and trounced the Nittany Lions 24-3. Joepa and the Nittany Lions are looking to even the score. They have the chance to knockoff the #3 team at home in front of a national television audiance on ESPN and at home in front of 108,112 people. But this definatly isnt JoePa's most talented team either. I projected this team to go 8-4 at best. I dont think they have the offense to get passed the great Tide defense or the defense to stop the very talanted Crimson offense. My projection, Bama 34-Penn St 10

Game Notes
This looks to be one of the best games this week. #12 South Carolina vs #23 Georgia. On paper, it looks like the Gamecocks will pull this one out. But we dont play football on paper. Yes South Carolina has one of the best offenses in college football. But only if QB Stephan Garcia is consistant, which he hardly ever is. So it looks like RB Marcus Lattimore will have to carry SC to a win this week. Garcia played a great game last week but then again that was against ECU. Georgia not only beat, but manhandled Boise St last week in the Georgia Dome. Thats why I give the edge to Georgia. They played a better opponent than SC and will be more battle-tested than SC. Projection- #12 South Carolina 20-#23 Georgia 27

Game Notes
This is the 2nd big SEC game this week. #18 Miss State vs #11 Auburn. Last year Auburn dominated most of their confrence schedule. But last year they had #1 overall draft pick Cam Newton. They also had Nick Fairly, now of the Detroit Lions. This year is definatly going to be diffrent than last for the Tigers. But they still have a team that should contend in the SEC West and could finish at beast 9-3. Both teams had good games against lesser opponents last week and are at 1-0. I'll give the advantage to Miss State because Auburns starting QB Barrett Trotter is out 5 weeks due to a dislocted elbow. It will be a great game but my projection is- #18 Miss State 17-#11 Auburn 9

Week 1 was huge for college football in many ways. We witnessed the Boise St Broncos lose in week 1 for the 1st time ever as a major football team. Not only were they beat, but they were manhandled the entire football game. Boise St managed only 1 score which was a 5 yd touchdown pass to Todd Shoemaker from Kellen Moore. Moore, who is expected to be a 2nd to 3rd round draft pick, was held to only 198 yds passing. Also pennelties hurt the Broncos. They were given 13 for 82 yds! This was definately the Boise St team we have seen in the past. The Broncos fell to #16 in the Coaches Poll and will need a lot of luck to even reach a BCS Bowl game.
Then there was the battle down in Cowboys Stadium. The #4 LSU Tigers vs the #5 Oregon Ducks. This was expected to be one of the greatest college football games of the year and it was! Oregon showed their powerfull offense led by RB LeMichael James early and jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the 1st Q. But LSU stormed back to take a 20-14 lead at halftime with the help of a 9 yd TD pass from Jordan Jefferson and 2 FGs by Darin Allemen. It was a defensive game most of the 3rd untill Oregon took the lead right before the 4th, with a 8 yd TD pass from backup QB Bryan Bennett. But their lead was short lived as Jordan Jefferson threw a 36 yd TD pass to take a 27-24 lead with 13:58 left. Then LeMichael James stepped up with a 21 yd run to take the lead 31-27 with 8:38 left. It was back and forth until with 2:31 left, LSU took over at their own 34 yd line. Working the clock,Jefferson lead the Tigers down to the Oregon 41 yd line. On 3rd and 3, Jefferson dropped back and threw the dagger to a wide open Derek Peterson for the game winning TD. Both teams showed great promise as potential BCS contenders. LSU is now up at #2 while Oregon fell to #10.The road will be harder for the Ducks now but with the talent they have, should be able to make a run.
