Milwaukee, WI
In a surprise move, Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio announces that GM Doug Melvin will not be returning for the 2015 season. Tensions were high as the Brewers held 1st place in the NL Central in 2014 into September and their late season collapse saw them drop out of playoff contention. The collapse and this lackluster offseason has forced Attanasio to make a splash to revitalize a fanbase thirsty for a championship run. Attanasio has hired 30 year old scout Brett Silverthorn as the new General Manager to replace Melvin. Silverthorn made a splash in his first day on the job by negotiating contracts for Cuban Defects, Second Base prospect Hector Olivera, and Starting Pitcher Yasmani Hernandez help bolster a roster with many returning players and fill a void left from Melvins final move trading pitcher Yovani Gallardo to Texas. Later on, Silverthorn would contact the agents and agree to deals with relievers Johnny Venters and John Axford and also Outfielder/First Baseman Wily Mo Pena, to provide much needed bull pen depth and a right handed bat for potential late inning pinch hitting and in case newly acquired Adam Lind were to struggle against left handed pitching. Venters (L) and Axford look to provide depth in a bullpen that faultered down the stretch late last year and will compete with Tyler Thornberg, Jim Henderson, Jonathan Broxton, Brandon Kintzler, Will Smith (L), Rob Wooten, and Michael Blazek.
As for Cuban Refugees Hernandez and Olivera. Hernandez is slated to become the 4th Starter behind Kyle Lohse, Matt Garza and Wily Peralta with the 5th Starter competition between Mike Fiers and Jimmy Nelson.
Olivera is listed as a potential platoon option with Scooter Gennett who struggles against left handed pitching and Olivera can provide an additional right handed bat on the bench for pinch hitting purposes.
Brewers fans will have to wait and see if this new approach will bolster or hinder their teams efforts in making a championship run in 2015.
