I bought Diablo 3 today. I'm excited to spend a bunch of time messing around with the game and hopefully enjoying it even though it barely works on my laptop. However, this game brought something up today that drove me crazy. A co-worker caught wind that I was getting a video game today (via Twitter) and in passing dropped the line, "I hear you're ready to get home to waste more time with another video game." Now I've heard this a bunch over the years of my nerdom but today it finally just rubbed me wrong. I shook off her comment and didn't react but when I got back to my desk it just sunk in. Why do people hate on video gamers so much??? Sure I sink a lot of time in my video games. But I also sink a lot of time into basketball and hanging with friends. It is MY free time. I don't go call people out for whatever they do in their free time whether it is shopping, cooking, reading, working out or whatever they enjoy doing. For some reason though playing video games is a TERRIBLE way to spend your time by an overwhelming amount of people. Now I get that some people spend too much time playing and never leave their house and just get fat and worthless on their couches but this is a minority. Some people workout too much or shop too much or read too much but for some reason these are not frowned on as harshly. So as of today I'm taking a stance for my nerdy lifestyle and instead of just letting the video game haters hate I'm going to defend my love for a controller in my hand. In the end I'll probably just look like an idiot...
