NOT SOLD OUT!
GAME POST:
Matt Rhead hit early in the 26 minute and it looked as if Portsmouth were going to be in for the fight of their lives. Manager Mike Blackwell started aging David Connolly for the first time this season, and it looked as if he were out of place at points.
Jed Wallace hit a beauty of a strike from about 20 yards out, and brought the match back level in the 35th minute.
The tough string of matches for the 36 year old David Connolly came to an end at the 47th minute of the match when he took a solid head to a winding cross and landed it all in the back of the net.
The game was riddled with yellow cards for Portsmouth. Five cards were handed out in the second half alone to Portsmouth. At one point, referee Chris Mumple gave cards to Simon Ferry and then Romain Padovani within a 10 second span of play.
John Sullivan and the Portsmouth Defense had a solid day, with youngster Simon Bradley making his first appearance on a Blackwell managed squad.
Portsmouth Manager Comments - Mike Blackwell
"I'll keep this short and sweet! It was a win!
I was very proud of our side tonight! We played extremely composed and did like a quality club should do. David (Connolly) and Ashley (Harris) both played very well, but the midfield (for me) was the big key to all of this.
Let me say, that there are very few occasions as to when a team should receive five yellow cards within forty-five minutes of play, and what happened tonight is not an example of when that is appropriate!"

REFEREE - LIAM KENNEDY
GAME POST:
Subrata Pal got his first action of the 2013 year against AFC Wimbledon. Portsmouth outplayed AFC Wimbledon in many of the categories but not complete the multitude of chances that they were presented.
Middle way in the first half, on a routine goal kick, GK Subrata Pal mis-kicks the ball directly to Jack Midson who was waiting at the top of the 18. One-time volley back into the empty net left Pal looking in utter disbelief. Liam Kennedy blew the whistle and the game had it's first goal. AFC Wimbledon 1 - Portsmouth Nil.
The second half kicked off with Portsmouth applying a little more pressure. A corner kick awarded to Portsmouth would give them new life. A deflected shot from the corner hits Worner directly in the hands and deflects off to a waiting Aaron Chapman at the top of the 18. He dribbles left and knocks the ball perfectly into just enough space for him to get a shot off. With two touches he's past the defender and able to direct the ball in to the bottom of the left side of the net.
Portsmouth Manager Comments - Mike Blackwell
"I felt that the play was very positive from our side. We did lack creativity for much of the game, and it was a little difficult to see much that we did to push the envelope. However, that was a concerted effort in the fact that I wanted us locked up defensively for Pal's first match.... and we were tight for the most part.
We should have had a clean sheet if Pal had not messed up on a goal kick and let Midson score what amounts to a give-me goal!
Captain Marcos Painter is the first player featured in this years Player Profile of 2013.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARCOS!
Full name Marcos David Painter
Date of birth 17 August 1986
Place of birth Solihull, England
Height 6 ft 0 in (1.83 m)
Playing position Left back
Career
Early career
Painter was born in Birmingham and brought up in the Chelmsley Wood area of Solihull, where he attended the Archbishop Grimshaw secondary school. He came through the Birmingham City Academy.
Painter was handed a new one-year professional contract at the start of the 2005–06 season, and was involved with the first team during the club's pre-season tour of Norway. During a game against SK Brann, his tackle on Slovenian international, Fabijan Cipot, broke both bones of the player's lower leg. The tackle was described by Brann's manager as "a really bad tackle, a possible career-ender", though Birmingham manager Steve Bruce insisted it had not been deliberate. Painter received a yellow card and was immediately substituted. He made his competitive debut against S****horpe United in the League Cup in September 2005, and played his first game in the Premier League in the starting eleven as Birmingham beat Fulham 1–0 in December. He finished the season with nine appearances in all competitions.
Swansea City
At the beginning of the 2006–07 season, Painter played in one league and one cup game for Birmingham, then, in November 2006, he joined League One club Swansea City on a month's loan, to cover for the injured Tom Williams. The loan was extended to three months, and, after Birmingham manager Steve Bruce admitted that he could not guarantee Painter regular first-team football, the player moved permanently to Swansea on 31 January 2007, for an initial fee of £25,000 with a further £25,000 to be paid a year later. Swansea City would also pay an additional sum if promoted. He established himself as Swansea's first-choice left back, playing 31 league games as the club were promoted to the Championship, and was a regular selection at the higher level until, in October 2008, he sustained cruciate ligament damage in his right knee during a 3–0 win over Southampton. He did not feature for Swansea for the rest of the season.
Brighton & Hove Albion
Painter made only six appearances for Swansea in the first half of the 2009–10 season. In January 2010, he joined League One club Brighton & Hove Albion on loan until the end of the season, and then signed a two-year deal with the club to begin on 1 July when his Swansea contract expired. He scored his first career goal after 81 minutes of the League One match against Walsall on 28 August, which proved to be the winner.
On 15 February 2013, Painter joined League One club AFC Bournemouth on loan for the remainder of the season. After playing twice in a month for Bournemouth, he was recalled by Albion because of an injury to first-choice left back Wayne Bridge. He played twice more for Albion in what remained of the season, and was released when his contract expired.
Portsmouth
On 15 August, Painter joined Portsmouth of League Two on a short-term contract.

August 13, 2013 - Griffin Park - Brentford's Donaldson hit a deflected ball just off the six yard box to give Brentford the one and only goal of the first leg of the Capital One. This knocks Portsmouth out early. Not what manager Mike Blackwell had been hoping for.
How does this effect his status going forward. That's hard to tell. The team looked good winning almost every stat category except for goals. Johannes Ertl even won the Man of the Match award with a match rating of 7.5.
Shots or opportunities were not lacking as Portsmouth had plenty of opportunities but just couldn't get a goal across. Crosses were landing in the rights spots, but the heading was lacking from Connolly and Mohsen.
As for the Capital One Cup? Better luck next year Portsmouth. Comments from the Board will be announced shortly!

August 12, 2013 - Fratton Park - Capital One Cup play begins and Portsmouth looks to continue the amibitous play leading into this tournament. Their first match will be against the formidable squad from Brentford.
"What we certainly don't want is an early exit," said Portsmouth FC manager Mike Blackwell. "We are the type of squad that chemistry and form mean everything. There are things we need to improve upon, and as long as we are doing those things I believe we'll be good."
The match is set for August 13th in Brentford. The games is to be televised on SkySports.

August 10, 2013 - Fratton Park - It was a great weekend for football at the pitch at Fratton Park on Saturday. Mike Blackwell addressed the few in attendance before the match and stated that he would look towards the Portsmouth community to help build this club right. For those that were at Fratton Park, they walked away with a joyous 3-1 win over Cheltenham Town.
Yassin Moutaouakil put in a great performance to achieve him the first Man-of-the-Match for Portsmouth of the 2013-2014 campaign. Surprising that the award did not go to Patrick Ageymang who did land 2 goals on the day. Or perhaps, newcomer Aaron Clapham who scored the first goal for Portsmouth of the season. Aaron is a new signing that joined the team three days ago and was playing his very first football game at Fratton Park.
The system looked to be slow and methodical, and right where Blackwell wanted the game the entire time. It did look as if GK John Sullivan might get a clean sheet, however a head ball by Brown from a beautiful free kick about 30 yards out, put Cheltenham Town on the board. The defense for the rest of the event held true.
Blackwell said after the game, "it was a pretty dominating performance when it comes to possession statistics. I was proud of each of our players. They took advantage of key opportunities, and pushed themselves to make our opportunities more significant that Cheltenham. We still need to click in a few areas, but all in all - it was a good showing."

August 9, 2013 - Tickets for Mike Blackwell's first match in League 2 as head football manager have not been selling like Board Members had foolishly hoped, but there is an air of excitement around Fratton Park. It's a spark of interest as Pompey has come of it's surprising friendly campaign.
As of late in the day on Tuesday, three new signings had arrived. Of those three, two look to be immediate starters on the squad. Including Gutierrez, a signing at Center Back a few weeks ago, it does look as if Blackwell is bolstering talent at each position.
For the last friendly match at Fratton Park, Blackwell did switch back to his traditional 4-1-2-1-2 formation which he was known to have legitimized in his time as an assistant in the MLS at Vancouver. Never-the-less, this is the expected strategy for the start of the 2013-2014 campaign.
Predicted Starting 11:
GK - John Sullivan
RB - Yassin Moutaouakil
CB - Bondz N'Gala
CB - Luis Alberto Gutierrez
LB - Marcos Painter
CDM - Johannes Ertl
CAM - Aaron Clapham
LM - Andy Barcham
