Wii U -- Data Transfer Workaround
Posted on December 27, 2014 at 10:49 PM.
Nintendo has created a process that allows you to transfer virtually all of your data from your Original Wii to your new Wii U. However, the data you transfer from your Original Wii is removed. Accordingly, I have heard mixed reactions about the transfer process and some have regretted doing it. There is a workaround if you just want to transfer Original Wii game saves to your Wii U or if you want to do the full transfer but want to re-install your game saves on your Original Wii. This will work for most games, but unfortunately does not work for Mario Kart and Endless Ocean, among others. I have outlined the process below for the games that can be transferred.

FIRST STEP: Copy of all your game saves (the ones that you can -- remember, some games like Mario Kart cannot be copied) from your Original Wii to a SD card and then copy those files onto your computer. Regardless of which workaround you want to use, you'll now have all of the game saves in a safe place.

If you don't want to do a full transfer of data to the Wii U but just want to have your Original Wii game save data on your Wii U, then follow these steps:

1) From the Original Wii screen on your Wii U, insert the Original Wii game disc for the appropriate game.

2) Insert a SD card into your Wii U. Click on "Wii Options" in the lower left corner of the Original Wii screen on your Wii U and then click on "Save Data" and then move the game data (for the game above) from your Wii U to the SD card.

3) Put the SD card into your computer and delete the game data that you just moved to it and replace it with the corresponding game data file that you saved to your computer.

4) Insert the SD card into your Wii U. Click on "Wii Options" (from the Original Wii screen) and then "Save Data" and move the game data to the Wii U.

Now you have both game files on both your Original Wii and the Wii U. If you did do a full transfer to the Wii U, you can basically follow the same steps but step 1 is performed on your Original Wii, rather than the Wii U, in order to re-install the game save back on your Original Wii.

Hope this helps!
