Avoiding the YLOD on your Fat PS3
Posted on August 31, 2013 at 10:36 PM.
I officially became a gamer in 2010 when I bought a PS3 Slim at the age of 43. About a year later, I happened to come across someone selling a Fat PS3 (60gb backwards compatible). The price was right so I decided to add that to my collection. Because of the overheating issues that I had heard about (as well as feeling how hot my Fat PS3 could get), I decided not to put it in an entertainment center slot but instead I let it rest "in the open" on top of the entertainment center so it could the heat from the console could escape. A few months after I purchased the Fat PS3, I upgraded the hard drive to a 5400 rpm 250 gb. However, I noticed some performance issues (1-second frame freezing during some games -- e.g., on the snap on Madden) As a result, I decided to try installing a higher-end 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache 320 gb hard drive. This fixed the problem, and it also appeared to help make the console run "less hot."

Accordingly, I'm wondering if these actions are, in fact, keeping my console from falling victim to the YLOD. Does anyone else have any insights on this?
