Scott Drew looks forward to this next season in Baylor basketball with reasonable optimism. A fresh batch of recruits lead by athletic center Isaiah Austin replenishes a Baylor squad that was barely unable to stretch itself over the hump last season. This new squad has many holes filled and much more surplus talent to provide spark off of the bench. Scott Drew's recruiting prowess has hauled in many blue-chippers who will only help push Baylor ever closer to a title. The time for Baylor basketball is now.

The roster for this season's Baylor Bears:
#0 Gary Franklin, PG, SO
#1 Perry Jones, PF, SO
#2 Jacob Neubert, SF, JR
#5 Isaiah Austin, C, FR
#10 L.J. Rose, PG, FR
#13 Brady Heslip, SG, SO
#14 Deuce Bello, SG, FR
#22 A.J. Walton, PG, JR
#25 Ricardo Gathers, PF, FR
#30 Quincy Miller, SF, FR
#33 Chad Rykhoek, PF, FR
#34 Cory Jefferson, PF, SO
#55 Pierre Jackson, PG, JR

GAME 1 - vs. Winston-Salem
Baylor 97 - 82 Winston-Salem

Perry Jones led the Bears with 22 points as Baylor went on to win a high-scoring affair in their season opener. Perry Jones finished with a double-double, adding in 14 boards. Newcomer Isaiah Austin showed the potential that he can live up to, tallying 12 points along with an outstanding 14 boards. Small Forward Quincy Miller joined the talented freshman exposition as he scored 19 points, going 7-11 from the field. The only other Baylor Bear to score in double-digits was athletic dunking machine Deuce Bello, finishing with 15. More will be expected out of PG Pierre Jackson, as the diminutive guard scored only 6 points and went 2-7 from the field, however, he did dish out 5 assists.

GAME 2 - vs. Lipscomb (1-0)
Baylor 73 - 40 Lipscomb

While the Bears failed to put up the massive offensive numbers of last game, they did manage to cut their opponent's score by half. The Bears put more pressure on the ball in this matchup, and more steals were produced throughout the game. Freshman PF Ricardo Gathers outshone all of the other fabulous freshman by scoring 15 points along with 9 rebounds. He also finished with 2 steals on the defensive side of the ball. Perry Jones's production dropped drastically, as he scored 11 points while shooting only 3-9. Isaiah Austin continued to produce around the 10-10 mark, scoring 9 points to complement his 11 boards. It will be interesting to see how his dominant low post play fares when Big XII conference play kicks in. Pierre Jackson scored in the double-digits for the first time this season, however, he failed to accumulate a single assist. The passing was mostly offered through the unlikely playmaker Brady Heslip, who, normally the 3-point specialist, finished with 6 assists while having a poor night shooting from the field. The Baylor defense shut down the Lipscomb squad, as not a single player from Lipscomb scored in the double digits.

GAME 3 - vs. Jackson State (0-0)
Baylor 114 - 74 Jackson State

It was a baptism by fire for the Jackson State squad, as they were overwhelmed by the Bears in their season opener. Star PF Perry Jones dominated the game with 25 points and 12 boards for the Bears. Bigman Isaiah Austin added 18 points while he underperformed in the rebounding department, only grabbing 5. Superb athlete Deuce Bello shot well from 3-point land (3-5) as he amassed 15 points and continues to battle with Brady Heslip for the starting SG spot. PG Pierre Jackson replicated last night's performance with 13 points and only threw out 4 assists, and once again, Brady Heslip topped that total (Heslip had five assists along with 13 points). Freshman PF Ricardo Gathers added power off of the bench with 8 points, 3 boards, and 2 blocks. SF Quincy Miller only played 11 minutes, but played well in that limited time (9 points, 3-5 FG) before encountering foul trouble.

GAME 4 - vs. Wichita State
Baylor 82 - 58 Wichita State

In what was seen as the first real test for the Baylor team, Wichita State proved unable to keep up with the Bears' ability to score from both outside and in. Perry Jones held his own down low, scoring yet another double-double (19 points and 11 rebounds) and grabbing two steals. Yet another powerful post performer was Isaiah Austin, scoring 13 points and recording 8 rebounds to complement his two blocks. PG Pierre Jackson continues to use his own skill set to score, as he topped last game's mark with 16 points, but once again lowered his assist total (2 assists in this game). SG Brady Heslip played 24 minutes and grabbed 3 steals, but he scored only 4 points, all of which were from the charity stripe. PF Ricardo Gathers showed that his hype was well warranted; he scored 16 points and recorded 7 boards along with an outstanding 4 blocks in only 19 minutes. This type of performance for Gathers continues to help coach Scott Drew sleep well at night, knowing that his bench can contribute readily and fully when needed to do so. Quincy Miller's time was once again limited (17 minutes) due to foul trouble. He finished with 4 points on 2-7 shooting and 2 blocks. Deuce Bello played well defensively, stealing the ball three times. Offensively, Bello scored 8 points on 50% shooting.

GAME 5 - vs. Notre Dame
Baylor 87 - 60 Notre Dame

Baylor continues to dominate the post game, but on this occasion versus Notre Dame, PF Perry Jones (9 points and 3 boards) took a back seat to the star freshman Ricardo Gathers, who scored 22 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. PG Pierre Jackson played his best game of the year, scoring 21 points while being able to pass for 6 assists and tally 2 steals. SG Brady Heslip took few shots, but still shot for a high percentage, scoring 7 points on 2-3 FG, and had a career night defensively, totaling 5 steals. SF Quincy Miller has been in a offensive slump for the past few games, and it only continued vs. Notre Dame. Miller scored 2 points, but held his own defensively, swatting two shots and grabbing two steals. Center Isaiah Austin continues to establish himself as the down low presence for the Bears in the present as well as in the future, nearly getting a double-double with 9 points and 8 boards. PG Gary Franklin, usually getting few minutes, shined tonight in 15 minutes, scoring 11 and passing for 3 assists and stealing the ball twice. PG AJ Walton may be close to losing the backup PG spot to Franklin, as Walton scored no points in 20 minutes of
playing time.

GAME 6 - vs. Winthrop
Baylor 82 - 51 Winthrop

Baylor continues to ride its hot streak with yet another win, making that six in a row to start the season. PG Pierre Jackson led the team in scoring with 18, and tallied 4 steals along with 3 assists. SF Quincy Miller finally broke from his cold streak, scoring 16 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. Defensively, Miller recorded a whopping 4 blocks. PF Perry Jones scored 8 points, but grabbed a stellar 13 boards, continuing Baylor's trend of low post power. Center Isaiah Austin is arguably the most consistent player so far, as he continued to produce in both the points and rebounds categories (11 points and 13 boards). SG Brady Heslip scored 9 points and dished out 5 assists. PF Ricardo Gathers took only four shot attempts, but made two of those, scoring 4 points while dominating with 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. Deuce Bello continues to vie for the starting SG spot, and he helped his case by scoring 8 points and grabbing a steal.

#20 Baylor will face their steepest challenge so far in this season later in the week. They will face #9 Illinois in an away game that may be a measuring point for Baylor come March. Illinois is paced by 7'1" Center Meyers Leonard, who averages 15.2 PPG and 6.4 RPG. Freshman PG Michael Orris has surprised many with his spectacular play so far, averaging 12.6 PPG, 4.2 APG, and 1.2 SPG. JR SG D.J. Richardson continues to play a consistent career for the Illini, and he is averaging 10.4 PPG, 4.0 RPG, and 1.4 APG. PF Tyler Griffey provides spark down low, averaging 10.0 PPG, 5.6 RPG, and 0.8 SPG. Baylor will be forced to look for ways to counter the Leonard-Griffey sparkplug that Illinois employs. Isaiah Austin seems confident that the Bears will continue their winning tradition when Baylor travels to Champaigne Thursday. "We will keep doing what we do," says Austin. "Our power is in the low post. Perry keeps doing his thing and I'm out to prove that I'm a legit center, regardless of my weight." Austin seemed to be dispelling the notion that his wiry frame was going to hinder his ability to defend against more stout post players this season (Leonard is 245 lbs and Griffey is 230). If Baylor can keep the low post defense where it has been so far this season, then Scott Drew can be sure that his squad will deliver vs. Illinois.

GAME 7 - vs. Illinois
Baylor 94 - 70 Illinois

Baylor won its first match against a ranked opponent Thursday, the unlucky victim being the Fighting Illini of Illinois. Ever the trend, a new star emerged to lead the Bears to victory in this important matchup. PG Pierre Jackson used his dynamic shiftiness and high-end speed to score 29 points (10-13 FG, 5-8 3PT), his highest scoring total in his career at Baylor. When asked about the performance in the postgame interview, a smiling Jackson shrugged it off. "I just did what I've been practicing all along. My crossover was really working against them and I just kept hitting the hole. My three-point shot was looking good today, too." Jackson also had 3 steals. PF Perry Jones scored in the double-digits yet again, this time with 13 points along with 6 rebounds. Center Isaiah Austin was not deterred by Griffey or Leonard, scoring 10 points and grabbing 9 boards. SF Quincy Miller is now back in the swing of things, as he scored 12 points on 5-8 shooting.

In the postgame interview, head coach Scott Drew said, "Seeing how we performed as a squad tonight was really something. Our offense was clicking, especially Pierre. He knows how to blow past defenders with those quick legs. Quincy's been improving, and I expect him to continue to hit those shots that we open him to shoot. Perry played well, but I do think he'll start playing like he did in the season opener against Winston-Salem pretty soon. He's incredibly gifted, and with that kind of talent, it's hard to not put up stellar numbers."

Baylor's next matchup is against #20 Washington State on Friday

GAME 8 - vs. Washington State
Baylor 66 - 77 Washington State

There's a first time for everything. That axiom is something Scott Drew will have to deal with. His Bears lost at home to #20 Washington State in front of what would become a very displeased crowd. Despite a a great output from Perry Jones, who scored 21 along with three blocks and three steals, Baylor couldn't click offensively. Pierre Jackson was the only other Baylor Bear in double digits point-wise. Isaiah Austin was sparing with his shot selection, only attempting three shots, but none of those hit home, and he finished scoreless, although he did pull down 7 boards. The Bears' youth showed tonight, and a prepped Washington State squad came into Waco with a better style of execution. "I have to admit, we were pretty excited about defeating Illinois the week before. I really do think that got to our heads. We may have thought we were invincible, that the "0" would stay in the loss column all season. Well, things have changed. We'll hit the floor harder than ever in practices tomorrow, and I plan on bringing discipline to a growing team. That is all." Drew may have been addressing a key issue in the game with some undertones. SF Quincy Miller was visibly upset at being yanked and only playing 18 minutes in the entire game. Miller, a 5-star recruit out of Chicago, is expected to have a wonderful career with Baylor, but it is clear that he will have to overcome some mental barriers before reaching that apex of his career. Drew may need to make sure the egos of the blue chip freshmen do not get out of hand in the way that UCLA's program was infected with egotistic players these past few seasons. Baylor will look to redeem themselves against South Dakota State (2-2) on Monday.

GAME 9 - vs. South Dakota State
Baylor 79 - 62 SDSU

Baylor may be back on track to replicating their earlier season performances with this win vs. South Dakota State. Pierre Jackson led the Bears with 18 points and continued to have a low assist turnout (3 assists). SG Brady Heslip scored 11 on 3-8 3PT. Center Isaiah Austin scored 6 points and grabbed 5 boards, but played considerably better on the defensive side of things, blocking two shots. PF Ricardo Gathers scored 13 points and brought down 6 boards. Quincy Miller had a cold night shooting, scoring 7 points on 3-7 shooting, but Miller did make his presence known on the boards, grabbing 8 rebounds.

GAME 10 - vs. South Carolina
Baylor 55 - 68 South Carolina

Issues on offense continue to hinder the progress of the Bears, as Baylor loses to South Carolina on the road. Deuce Bello was the lone Bear to score in double-digits. Baylor out-rebounded the Gamecocks 37-24, but their offensive production destroyed any hope of winning their 9th game. Pierre Jackson shot 2-9 from the field, but did pass for 5 assists. Perry Jones brought down 13 rebounds and had 5 blocks, but scored only 8 points. Quincy Miller shot for a low percentage in another forgettable outing, and had to be brought out once again for foul trouble. SG Brady Heslip went scoreless, as he couldn't strike from 3-point land (both of his FGA were 3PT attempts). Isaiah Austin scored 9, but that was on 2-10 shooting, something Austin has to improve on. Austin, however, did not waver when the ball was in the air, as he brought in 9 boards. The Bears will look to rebound with a win against a mediocre Southern squad two days from now.

GAME 11 - vs. Southern
Baylor 110 - 87 Southern

Offensive production was the main point of emphasis for Scott Drew's squad during Wednesday practices, the day before tonight's game @ Southern. The practice must have created something for the Bears, as they double their score from the USC game vs. Southern with 110 points. Center Isaiah Austin stepped up in grand fashion, going 11-15 from the field en route to scoring 30 points. Austin could not be stopped in the low post, and he added 6 rebounds to his stellar performance. Perry Jones scored 16 points (4-6 FGA) to show that he is closing in on becoming the star player he can become on a nightly basis. Quincy Miller scored 10 points on 4-7 shooting, a nice step up from his past several performances. Miller added in 6 rebounds. Brady Heslip hit 2 of his attempted 5 three-pointers, and finished with 10 points. Deuce Bello continues to drive hard to the rim, using his freakishly athletic talents to score 8 points and grab three boards. PG Pierre Jackson continues to turn himself into a score-first type of guard, this time scoring 19 with 4 assists. PG A.J. Walton made good use of his limited playing time, scoring 8 points on 3-4 shooting in only 11 minutes. Baylor won't play for over a week, playing at home vs. Prairie View (1-8) a week from tomorrow.

GAME 12 - vs. Prairie View
Baylor 77 - 58 Prairie View

Perry Jones led the Bears to a much-needed win today against Prairie View. Jones scored 23 points and recorded 14 rebounds in 29 minutes played. He also was a stalwart defensively, stealing the ball twice and rejecting two shots. Ricardo Gathers played the 3 spot well today, shifting from his normal position of PF. Gathers scored 11 points and grabbed 7 boards. Isaiah Austin had fewer rebounds to grab with Perry Jones having a career performance (Austin had 3), and he underperformed in FG% (3-11 FG), but still managed to get 10 points. SG Brady Heslip was phenomenal from his 3-point specialist role, shooting 3-5 FG, all of which were from 3-point land. Pierre Jackson drove to the basket more frequently and dished out passes to open Bears on the wings, and Jackson finished with five assists while scoring 7 points on only 2-8 shooting. SF Quincy Miller had limited playing time due to foul trouble, and score 4 points to go along with 3 rebounds. SG Deuce Bello shot 50% from the field as he went 2-4 in field goals and finished with 5 points and 3 assists. Next game is in two days versus the winless Florida A&M Rattlers.

GAME 13 - vs. Florida A&M
Baylor 108 - 62 Florida A&M

Perry Jones may have finally hit his stride that will carry over into conference play as Baylor had no trouble fending off the Florida A&M Rattlers today. Jones scored 24 points and added in 16 rebounds to lead the Bears past the 100-point mark. PG Pierre Jackson also had a memorable night, scoring 19 points and throwing out 6 assists. Jackson's assist total has gradually risen over the past few games, which is something Scott Drew has been hoping to see out of the quick Jackson. Center Isaiah Austin dominated the low post, shooting 50% from the field with 16 points and 11 rebounds. SF Quincy Miller shot a perfect 4-4 FG to total 13 points along with 6 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. Miller's all-around game seems to be improving into the shape of the vast potential he holds. SG Deuce Bello also shot 4-4 from the field and scored 11 points and pulled down 4 rebounds. PF Ricardo Gathers shot 2-7 FG while tallying 8 points and 5 rebounds in 24 minutes of play. SG Brady Heslip went 2-5 from downtown for 7 points total. Baylor will face the 8-5 Arkansas Razorbacks at home on Saturday, as they hope to get their first win against an SEC opponent this season.

GAME 14 - vs. Arkansas
Baylor 72 - 71 Arkansas

Baylor was able to squeak out a win as the Bears barely survived a game against Arkansas at home tonight. Pierre Jackson led the Bears with 18 points on a hot handle, shooting 5-8 FG. Isaiah Austin added in 13 points along with 8 boards to power the Bears down low. Perry Jones had a cold night shooting, going 4-16 and scoring 10 points in the process along with 9 rebounds. Ricardo Gathers showed glimpses of excellence in his 9-point and 3-rebound performance. Deuce Bello scored 8 points while only shooting (and making) 1 FGA. Quincy Miller was strict with his shot selection tonight, only shooting the ball 3 times, and making one of those attempts. Miller ended with 4 points and 7 rebounds. SG Brady Heslip scored 3 points, making one of his two three-point attempts, while dishing out 4 assists. Conference Play begins in a mere week when the Bears take on the Iowa State Cyclones in a home game. Baylor will play the Brown Bears three days from now.

GAME 15 - vs. Brown
Baylor 103 - 61 Brown

Scott Drew was surely pleased with his team's performance in their last game before the start of conference play. "I think this type of play that our team has been showing over the past several games is a good sign going into the heart of the season." For Baylor, the leading scorer was none other than Isaiah Austin, who shot for 25 points on 9-15 FG while grabbing 6 boards. Austin was dominant in the low post, backing down and using his superb body mechanics to set up post moves that riddled the Brown defense. Quincy Miller added in 18 points to the Baylor effort, shooting an amazing 70% from the field, including his 4-5 3P statline. Miller also added in 3 blocks and a steal in an impressive defensive showing. SG Brady Heslip was efficient when he shot, scoring 12 points on only 2-3 3P. Perry Jones put the ball in the basket with a sophisticated style of play, scoring 14 points and getting his hands dirty in the low post, grabbing 7 rebounds and swatting 3 shots. Deuce Bello continues to show that he can penetrate to the basket at will and still continue to put up points, tallying 15 points while going 4-8 from the field. PG Pierre Jackson showed his willingness to share the ball today, scoring 3 points on only 4 FGA while passing for 8 assists and keeping his head up on defense, resulting in 3 steals. PF Cory Jefferson only played 4 minutes, put managed to shoot 2-2 in FG to total 5 points and grab 3 rebounds. Next Bears will play Iowa State in the opener to Big XII conference play later this week.

GAME 16 - vs. Iowa State
Baylor 93 - 72 Iowa State

The Bears capture their first conference win Thursday with a victory over Iowa State in a home matchup. Perry Jones paced the Bears with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Jones continues week in and week out to vie for a potential Big XII Player of the Year Award. Isaiah Austin continued his down-low presence with a 20-point effort (9-13 FG) to go along with 7 rebounds. Ricardo Gathers added in 13 points and 4 rebounds on the offensive side of the ball, while blocking two shots in post defense. SG Deuce Bello used his shiftiness and altogether freakish athletic ability to go 3-5 from the field to total 8 points and steal the ball twice. PG Pierre Jackson and SF Quincy Miller both had tough nights shooting. Jackson went 2-6 FG and passing for only 3 assists, while Miller shot a miserable 2-11 from the field, but grabbed 9 rebounds. However, both players played well defensively, with Jackson nabbing two steals and a block and Miller stealing the ball once and getting a block. SG Brady Heslip scored 6 points, all of which were from the charity stripe. Next up for Baylor is a home matchup against Oklahoma State (9-5) three days from now.

Its that time of the year again in Eugene. The University of Oregon football team is ready to start the season off with great aspirations and a great influx of talent. The story of the offseason was last year's starting QB Jeremiah Masoli being booted off of the team by Head Coach Chip Kelly on June 9. Now the question of who will lead the Oregon offense looms large in the Press. It seems to be a two way race between Senior Nate Costa and dual-threat Sophomore Darron Thomas. Coach Kelly has yet to give away any information on the likely favorite. More updates to come.

Today, Coach Kelly gave out a list of those players on the team that will be redshirting the 2010 year. They are as follows:

QB Bryan Bennett
RB Lache Seastrunk
RB Dontae Williams
WR Keanon Lowe
WR Eric Dungy
TE Brandon Williams
TE Curtis White
LG Nick Rowland
RG Ryan Clanton
LE Tyrell Irvin
DT Ricky Heimuli
CB Terrance Mitchell
CB Dior Mathis
SS Erick Dargan
K Eric Solis
