Trouble in Michigan

“If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying” Jessie Ventura

I’ve been a sports fan for as long as I can remember, so I’ve seen a lot. But I don’t think that we have ever seen a defending National Champion enter into the season with so much negative baggage as the Michigan Wolverines. Let’s do a quick rundown of the exodus and issues following the Championship run, and why this spells the end of this golden era (but probably not this year)

So first off the head coach leaves his old school to pursue his chance to make even more millions of dollars coaching in the NFL. Not uncommon. You know what else is uncommon? Getting fired from that pro job in under 1.5 seasons. That’s exactly what Vegas thinks, that Jim Harbaugh will be fired by the Chargers in 23 games. Wonder why he left? I bet it rhymes with “NCAA Sanctions”. 4 years of show clause. At least he won’t have to deal with the fact that…..

Michigan lost 15 players to the NFL last year. That is a lot for any coach to overcome. New, young players will need an experienced staff and at least Sherron Moore will have that to lean on. Except he won’t. Because along with Harbuagh…

They also lost their Running Backs coach and their entire defensive coaching staff (Mike Hart, Steve Clinkscale, Jesse Minter, and Mike Elston) as they either went to the NFL or got a DUI. Things are starting to seem troublesome in Ann Arbor.

So no returning Head Coach, lost over half of the starters to the NFL, entire defensive staff leaves, maybe the new guy has the backing of the school now that the allegations of the previous staff are all in the rear view window, wait, what’s that you say…well god DAMN IT!

News reports this week by CBS Sports state that coach Sherron Moore deleted over 50 text messages to the spy that was stealing signs. Of course the NCAA is not buying the excuse that he was drunk texting a hookup and feels as if these texts are directly related to the dirtball sign stealing scheme that was in place. Early reporting seems to look like Coach Moore will slide, but what if the NCAA tried to suspend him for a game or two?

Unlike last year’s cupcake early season, the Wolverines have to practically defend their title in the 2nd week matchup vs Texas and the 4th week matchup vs USC. If this spirals out of control, what happens if they open 2-2, the NCAA hits the coach with a show clause, and the team bottoms out losing to Penn State, Ohio State, or both later in the year? I’m thinking that the Sherron Moore era at Michigan may be shorter that the Jim Harbuagh era in the NFL.

I’ll admit that I’ve been playing a bit of Devil’s Advocate here. Given the fact that Texas and USC early games are home, they will most likely still be favorited. The middle section of the schedule is butter soft and Michigan could just appeal and wait for that process to play out. But let me remind you of this. The NCAA is a petty group of individuals who punish teams far worse for far less and they still have a bad taste in their mouth after the **** Michigan pulled off during their 15-0 run last year. I will most assuredly be the one shouting “Itoedaso” at the top of my lungs if the NCAA shuts down a Michigan repeat before it even starts.

RIP Steve Kragthorpe – The former Louisville and Tulsa coach had a 44-43 record. Died one game over.

Florida Gators will be the 1st team to fire coach midseason – Billy Napier is the only coach in modern school history to have back to back losing seasons at Florida. He is 1-9 vs Kentucky, FSU, Georgia, LSU and Tennessee. This year they play 8 teams in the pre-season top 25. He will be the 1st coach fired this season, probably by game 5.
