THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES: A FRANCHISE WITH HOPE

The Pittsburgh Pirates streak of 18 consecutive losing seasons is the longest streak for any professional sports franchise in history. This streak will reach 19 this year, and it seems, unless there are drastic changes to their team, the streak will reach a full two decades after the 2012 season. As of now, the Pittsburgh Pirates are the worst sports franchise in professional sports. (Yes, even you Cleveland Browns).

However, things could be looking up, as the Pirates have spectacular young talent on their team. The Pirates success this season will largely depend on the play of four young players: Andrew McCutchen, Jose Tabata, Neil Walker, and Pedro Alvarez. They have all proven they can play at the MLB level; however they are all still young. With a little help from Lyle Overbay and Garrett Jones, the offense should not be the Pirates main problem.

The real problem will lie with the pitching staff. The Pirates will have one of the worst pitching rotations in the MLB this season. With the likes of Paul Maholm and Ross Ohlendorf at the top of the rotation, the Pirates starting rotation will indeed struggle mightily. The bullpen will also give the Pirates problems, as they do not have a ton of proven talent in the pen.

While the Pirates will be nowhere close to a contender in the NL central, they are boasting one of the better teams they have had in years. While this isn’t saying a whole lot at least the Pirates are making great strides toward becoming a decent franchise. Fans will have a team worth watching in 2011.
