SACK ATTACK: Orton Dropped Nine Times as Bengals Earn Tough Win
Bengals D-Lineman Mike Patterson celebrates a 4th down sack, ending any hopes of Orton leading a comeback
The Broncos knew they were going to face pressure from the Bengals front 7, but they likely didn't expect this. Kyle Orton was sacked 9 times, the heavy majority coming in the 2nd half, as Cincinnati's defense smothered the Bronco's passing attack en route to a 23-13 victory.
Week 1 Player of the Week Rey Maualuga had another huge game, claiming 3 of the sacks. Carlos Dunlap, Mike Patterson, and Reggie Nelson also joined in the fun. The secondary made a statement as well, allowing Orton to throw for just 113 yards and also intercepting him for the first time this season.
Denver's defense was no slouch today either, as neither offense was able to get much going throughout the game. But the biggest play of the game followed immediately after Leon Hall's interception, with the Broncos leading 10-6 - Cedric Benson caught the Broncos on a blitz and took off on a 52 yard run to the endzone. From that point the Bengals' D took over the game.
Field goals were the story of the first half as both teams could move the football but were unable to punch it in. Denver did manage to score one TD as Orton found Lloyd for his 2nd TD catch of the season. The Broncos were unable to establish the running game , with most of HB Knowshon Moreno's 66 carry yards coming on passing downs.
The win may have come at a cost for Cincinnati - Andy Dalton's go-to Tight End Jermaine Gresham left the game in the 4th quarter with an apparent elbow injury.
1-1 Denver goes on the road for the first time next week to take on the Tennessee Titans while the 2-0 Bengals head home for their home opener against the 49ers.
Highlights and full game will be up in the arena shortly.
