BOSTON, MA - Blake Swihart has been playing very well, but with the Red Sox playing better than expected they needed some depth at the catcher position. Management looked over the minor leagues, and with nobody ready they started making calls and found a deal.

The Phillies are in rebuilding mode and keen to dump as much salary as possible. The Phillies were also looking to move Cliff Lee, but his $18.5 million a year contract was too much for the cost cutting Red Sox. Carlos Ruiz ($8.41 million) is an expensive backup, but his experience will help Swihart develop. The deal only cost Boston RF Henry Ramos, who doesn't figure in Boston plans.
