THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

DETROIT, MI - Boston's second game in Detroit would be big for team momentum. The Red Sox came into the game riding an 8 game win streak, sweeping Cleveland and Tampa Bay, which included a shocking 19-0 beating of the Tigers in the series opener. Justin Verlander would take the mound to face Jon Lester, so if anyone was going to halt Boston it would be Verlander.

Things started off well for Detroit, and through the 1st inning Verlander was in Cy Young form. Verlander struck out Bogaerts, Pedroia, and Ortiz with minimal effort, but things went south very fast in the 2nd. A Napoli single was followed by two consecutive walks (Middlebrooks and Victorino) to load the bases for Grady Sizemore. Sizemore made the most of it and gave Boston as 4-0 lead with a grand slam that would ruin Verlander's day.

Lester would give up a run in the 3rd to make it 4-1, but he would cruise through 7IP with only 2BB and 11K. If the Tigers thought Lester would be rattled after their last meeting, they were very wrong. Victor Martinez continued to be very difficult, going 2/4 with an RBI, but it wouldn't be enough. Boston scored again in the 8th, and Detroit once more in the bottom of the 9th to end the game 5-2. The win brings Boston within a single game of Baltimore atop the AL East.
