2014 Minor League Report (May)

THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

Two months out of the way and everyone is starting to round into form. No major injuries in the majors, so nobody has been promoted to fill in at this point.

Player (Prospect Grade - John Sickels, Current Level)

3B, Garin Cecchini (Grade : B+, AAA Pawtucket)

Good offensive numbers (27R 8HR 27RBI) make an unspectacular BA (.266) palatable. Continues to steal bases (10) with a decent K:BB ratio (21:33).

LHP, Henry Owens (Grade : B+, AA Portland)

Did not have a great month of May (34.1IP 3.93ERA), but overall numbers are still very good

RHP, Anthony Ranaudo (Grade : B, AAA Pawtucket)

Not having a good start to the season, 5.48ERA in 69.0IP is highlighted by 31BB. Needs to improve his command and show more mastery of his secondary pitches.

2B, Mookie Betts (Grade : B, AAA Pawtucket)

Still listed as a 2B, but getting equal playing time at RF. Boston seems to be prepping him for a future of not-being-as-good-as Dustin Pedroia, which is fair. His work at the plate isn't going to unseat Pedroia for sure, or really anyone, hitting .266 with 4HR and 26RBI.

C, Blake Swihart (Grade : B, AA Portland)

Swihart continues to hit well, but a strained finger has prevented him from playing regularly. 6HR and 32RBI while hitting .304 will probably get him to AAA at some point this season.

RHP, Allen Webster (Grade : B-, AAA Pawtucket)

Struggling much like Ranaudo, 6.23ERA and a 29:44 BB:K ratio isn't helping his season. Also needs to show more command of his secondary pitches.

RHP, Matt Barnes (Grade : B-, AAA Pawtucket)

Looking like the Pawtucket ace at 3-2 with a 2.74ERA. 63K in 85.1IP, definitely impressing coaches.

LHP, Trey Ball (Grade : B-, AA Portland)

All of his numbers look great, 4.50ERA a little deceptive, dominating hitters but having back luck with hits occurring with men on base. Only 28BB in 78.0IP is a good sign for such a young pitcher.

Players Making Noise

RHP, Brandon Workman (Grade : B-, AAA Pawtucket)

Workman, who already has a little over 40IP in the majors under his belt, is starting to look like he deserves more. Despite being seen as less talented than fellow RHP Allen Webster, he could beat him to The Show if he continues to pitch well. The organization sees him as a reliever going forward, but that could change.

LHP, Drake Britton (Grade : C+, AAA Pawtucket)

Drake has pitched well and garnered some attention. Probably a reliever long-term, but still valuable as a lefty. If Britton finishes the season strong he could get a September call-up.
