THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)

ATLANTA, GA - Jon Lester must have angered the Baseball Gods at some point, forcing them to match him up against the best young pitchers everyone has to offer. This time it was Mike Minor, and Boston would have their hands full for most of the game.

Perhaps it was the warm Georgia night, but both teams did a massive amount of swinging at air. Both teams cruised through three innings without generating much offense, the stalemate was finally broken in the 4th with a Shane Victorino solo-HR, but a rally by Atlanta evened the score 1-1 in the 6th. Lester was pulled after the 6th, having 12K and a whopping 124 pitches thrown to get those K's, and that was Atlanta's opening. Mike Minor finished the 7th, with 9K of his own, and Edward Mujica gave up a run in the bottom of the inning to put Minor in a position to claim a win.

Grady Sizemore became the story of this game, starting with a mistake in the outfield that allowed Jason Heyward's single to turn into a triple and score BJ Upton from 1st. Will Middlebrooks became a hero in the 8th with a solo-HR that brought the score to 2-2, but Sizemore struck again and took a bad angle to a ball that allowed Andrelton Simmons to go from 1st to home and take a 3-2 lead. Enter Craig Kimbrel, exit Sizemore (pop-out) and Bradley (K) to bring up the pitchers slot. Farrell, playing the percentages, would put in lefty Daniel Nava over Mike Napoli to face Kimbrel. It would pay off all the way from home plate to just over the RF wall, but not far enough, as Heyward would make the leap and rob the game tying run. Game over.
