THE BOSTON GLOBE (RED SOX DYNASTY REPORT)
BOSTON, MA - The Red Sox completed their second trade of the season with a real stunner, as the St. Louis Cardinals opted to part with 23-year-old SP Shelby Miller. The Red Sox sent 2B/SS Ryan Roberts (AAA Pawtucket) to St. Louis in exchange for Miller, who is currently 3-3 with a 3.52ERA and 31K.
The addition of Miller could be huge in 2014 and beyond
Perhaps the Cardinals know something about Miller that caused them to let him go, they are struggling at 2B so Roberts fills a need, but Miller had a very good season in 2013 (15-9, 3.01ERA 169K and a 1.20WHIP) and figured to be a mainstay in their rotation. Miller brings an influx of youth to the Boston rotation, most likely pushing the struggling Jon Lackey to the pen.
This trade is an excellent win-now move combined with an eye on the future. Miller, 23, has a very promising future after a break-out 2013 season. With Miller as a nominal Ace-in-waiting the red Sox will not have to press their minor league arms into the rotation until they are ready.
